Israels barn gjorde det som var ondt i Herrens øyne, og Herren overgav dem i Midians hånd i syv år.

And the children of Israel did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah: and Jehovah delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years.

Midian fikk overtaket over Israel. På grunn av Midian bygde Israels barn seg gjemmesteder i fjellene, grotter og festninger.

And the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel; and because of Midian the children of Israel made them the dens which are in the mountains, and the caves, and the strongholds.

Hver gang Israel hadde sådd, kom Midianittene, Amalekittene og folkene fra øst opp mot dem.

And so it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites came up, and the Amalekites, and the children of the east; they came up against them;

De slo leir mot dem og ødela avlingene helt til Gaza, og lot ingen næring være igjen i Israel, verken sauer, okser eller esler.

and they encamped against them, and destroyed the increase of the earth, till thou come unto Gaza, and left no sustenance in Israel, neither sheep, nor ox, nor ass.

For de kom opp med buskapen og teltene sine, de kom som en mengde gresshopper; både de og deres kameler var uten tall, og de kom inn i landet for å ødelegge det.

For they came up with their cattle and their tents; they came in as locusts for multitude; both they and their camels were without number: and they came into the land to destroy it.

And Israel was brought very low because of Midian; and the children of Israel cried unto Jehovah.

And it came to pass, when the children of Israel cried unto Jehovah because of Midian,

sendte Herren en profet til dem. Han sa til dem: Så sier Herren, Israels Gud: Jeg førte dere opp fra Egypt og førte dere ut av slavehuset.

that Jehovah sent a prophet unto the children of Israel: and he said unto them, Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you forth out of the house of bondage;

Jeg reddet dere fra egypterne og fra alle som undertrykte dere, og jeg drev dem bort foran dere og gav dere deres land.

and I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all that oppressed you, and drove them out from before you, and gave you their land;

Og jeg sa til dere: Jeg er Herren deres Gud. Dere skal ikke frykte amortitts guder, i det landet dere bor. Men dere hørte ikke på min røst.

and I said unto you, I am Jehovah your God; ye shall not fear the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell. But ye have not hearkened unto my voice.

Herrens engel kom og satte seg under eika i Ofra, som tilhørte Joasj, Abiesritens, hvor sønnen hans Gideon tresket hvete i vinpressen for å gjemme det for midianittene.

And the angel of Jehovah came, and sat under the oak which was in Ophrah, that pertained unto Joash the Abiezrite: and his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites.

Herrens engel viste seg for ham og sa til ham: Herren er med deg, du modige kriger.

And the angel of Jehovah appeared unto him, and said unto him, Jehovah is with thee, thou mighty man of valor.

Gideon svarte: Å, Herre, hvis Herren er med oss, hvorfor har alt dette rammet oss? Hvor er alle hans undergjerninger, som våre fedre fortalte oss om, da de sa: Brakte ikke Herren oss opp fra Egypt? Men nå har Herren forlatt oss og gitt oss i Midians hånd.

And Gideon said unto him, Oh, my lord, if Jehovah is with us, why then is all this befallen us? and where are all his wondrous works which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not Jehovah bring us up from Egypt? but now Jehovah hath cast us off, and delivered us into the hand of Midian.

Herren vendte seg til ham og sa: Gå med denne din styrke og frels Israel fra Midians hånd. Har ikke jeg sendt deg?

And Jehovah looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, and save Israel from the hand of Midian: have not I sent thee?

Han sa til ham: Å, Herre, hvordan kan jeg frelse Israel? Se, min slekt er den fattigste i Manasse, og jeg er den minste i min fars hus.

And he said unto him, Oh, Lord, wherewith shall I save Israel? behold, my family is the poorest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father's house.

Herren sa til ham: Jeg vil være med deg, og du skal slå midianittene som om de var én mann.

And Jehovah said unto him, Surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt smite the Midianites as one man.

Da sa han til ham: Hvis jeg har funnet nåde i dine øyne, så gi meg et tegn på at det er du som taler med meg.

And he said unto him, If now I have found favor in thy sight, then show me a sign that it is thou that talkest with me.

Dra ikke herfra før jeg kommer tilbake til deg og tar med min gave og legger den foran deg. Og han svarte: Jeg skal bli til du kommer tilbake.

Depart not hence, I pray thee, until I come unto thee, and bring forth my present, and lay it before thee. And he said, I will tarry until thou come again.

Gideon gikk inn og tilberedte et geitekje og usyret brød av en efa mel. Kjøttet la han i en kurv, og kraften helte han i en krukke. Han brakte det ut til ham under eika og presenterte det.

And Gideon went in, and made ready a kid, and unleavened cakes of an ephah of meal: the flesh he put in a basket, and he put the broth in a pot, and brought it out unto him under the oak, and presented it.

Guds engel sa til ham: Ta kjøttet og det usyrede brødet og legg dem på denne klippen og hell ut kraften. Og han gjorde så.

And the angel of God said unto him, Take the flesh and the unleavened cakes, and lay them upon this rock, and pour out the broth. And he did so.

Herrens engel rakte ut enden av staven han hadde i hånden, og rørte ved kjøttet og det usyrede brødet. Da slo det opp ild av klippen og fortærte kjøttet og brødet, og Herrens engel forsvant for hans øyne.

Then the angel of Jehovah put forth the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and there went up fire out of the rock, and consumed the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and the angel of Jehovah departed out of his sight.

Da innså Gideon at det var Herrens engel, og han sa: Ve meg, Herre Gud! For jeg har sett Herrens engel ansikt til ansikt.

And Gideon saw that he was the angel of Jehovah; and Gideon said, Alas, O Lord Jehovah! forasmuch as I have seen the angel of Jehovah face to face.

Herren sa til ham: Fred være med deg; frykt ikke, du skal ikke dø.

And Jehovah said unto him, Peace be unto thee; fear not: thou shalt not die.

Da bygget Gideon et alter der for Herren og kalte det Jehovah-Shalom. Det står der ennå i Ofra, som tilhører abiesrittene.

Then Gideon built an altar there unto Jehovah, and called it Jehovah-shalom: unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

Den samme natten sa Herren til ham: Ta din fars unge okse, ja, den andre oksen som er syv år gammel, og riv ned altreret for Baal, som din far har, og hugg ned Asjera som står ved siden av den.

And it came to pass the same night, that Jehovah said unto him, Take thy father's bullock, even the second bullock seven years old, and throw down the altar of Baal that thy father hath, and cut down the Asherah that is by it;

Bygg et alter for Herren din Gud på toppen av denne festningen i riktig rekkefølge, og ta den andre oksen og ofre den som et brennoffer med treet fra Asjera du skal hugge ned.

and build an altar unto Jehovah thy God upon the top of this stronghold, in the orderly manner, and take the second bullock, and offer a burnt-offering with the wood of the Asherah which thou shalt cut down.

Da tok Gideon ti av sine tjenere og gjorde som Herren hadde sagt til ham. Men fordi han fryktet sin fars husstand og mennene i byen, gjorde han ikke dette om dagen, men om natten.

Then Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as Jehovah had spoken unto him: and it came to pass, because he feared his father's household and the men of the city, so that he could not do it by day, that he did it by night.

Da mennene i byen tidlig om morgenen så at altreret for Baal var revet ned, Asjera var hugget ned ved siden av det, og den andre oksen var ofret på det nybygde alteret,

And when the men of the city arose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was broken down, and the Asherah was cut down that was by it, and the second bullock was offered upon the altar that was built.

sa de til hverandre: Hvem har gjort dette? Da de undersøkte og spurte, fant de ut at Gideon, Joasjs sønn, hadde gjort det.

And they said one to another, Who hath done this thing? And when they inquired and asked, they said, Gideon the son of Joash hath done this thing.

Da sa mennene i byen til Joasj: Ta fram din sønn, han skal dø, fordi han har revet ned Baals alter og hugget ned Asjera ved siden av det.

Then the men of the city said unto Joash, Bring out thy son, that he may die, because he hath broken down the altar of Baal, and because he hath cut down the Asherah that was by it.

Joasj sa til alle som sto mot ham: Vil dere kjempe for Baal? Vil dere redde ham? Den som kjemper for ham, skal dø i morgen tidlig. Hvis han er en gud, la ham kjempe for seg selv fordi hans alter er revet ned.

And Joash said unto all that stood against him, Will ye contend for Baal? Or will ye save him? he that will contend for him, let him be put to death whilst `it is yet' morning: if he be a god, let him contend for himself, because one hath broken down his altar.

Fra den dagen kalte han ham Jerubbaal, som betyr: La Baal kjempe mot ham, fordi han har revet ned hans alter.

Therefore on that day he called him Jerubbaal, saying, Let Baal contend against him, because he hath broken down his altar.

Alle midianittene, amalekittene og de fra øst samlet seg, krysset over og slo leir i Jesreeldalen.

Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the children of the east assembled themselves together; and they passed over, and encamped in the valley of Jezreel.

Da kom Herrens ånd over Gideon, og han blåste i trompeten, og Abieser samlet seg bak ham.

But the Spirit of Jehovah came upon Gideon; and he blew a trumpet; and Abiezer was gathered together after him.

Han sendte budbringere gjennom hele Manasse, og de samlet seg og fulgte etter ham; og han sendte budbringere til Asjer, Sebulon og Naftali, og de kom opp for å møte dem.

And he sent messengers throughout all Manasseh; and they also were gathered together after him: and he sent messengers unto Asher, and unto Zebulun, and unto Naphtali; and they came up to meet them.

Gideon sa til Gud: Hvis du vil redde Israel ved min hånd, som du har sagt,

And Gideon said unto God, If thou wilt save Israel by my hand, as thou hast spoken,

så legger jeg en fåreskinns ull på treskeplassen; hvis det er dugg bare på fåreskinnet, mens hele bakken er tørr, så skal jeg vite at du vil redde Israel ved min hånd, som du har sagt.

behold, I will put a fleece of wool on the threshing-floor; if there be dew on the fleece only, and it be dry upon all the ground, then shall I know that thou wilt save Israel by my hand, as thou hast spoken.

Og slik skjedde det. Han stod tidlig opp neste morgen, vred fåreskinnet og presset dugg ut av fåreskinnet – en bolle full av vann.

And it was so; for he rose up early on the morrow, and pressed the fleece together, and wrung the dew out of the fleece, a bowlful of water.

Gideon sa til Gud: La ikke din vrede brenne mot meg, men la meg tale én gang til: La meg prøve én gang til med fåreskinnet; la det nå være tørt kun på fåreskinnet, og dugg over hele bakken.

And Gideon said unto God, Let not thine anger be kindled against me, and I will speak but this once: let me make trial, I pray thee, but this once with the fleece; let it now be dry only upon the fleece, and upon all the ground let there be dew.

Og Gud gjorde det den natten, for det var tørt på fåreskinnet, men det var dugg over hele bakken.

And God did so that night: for it was dry upon the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground.
