Verse 1

Manasseh was twelve years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem for fifty-five years.

Manasseh was twelve years old when he began to reign, and he reigned fifty and five years in Jerusalem:

Verse 2

He did what was evil in the sight of the LORD, following the detestable practices of the nations the LORD had driven out before the Israelites.

But did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, like unto the abominations of the heathen, whom the LORD had cast out before the children of Israel.

Verse 3

He rebuilt the high places that his father Hezekiah had torn down, set up altars to the Baals, made Asherah poles, and worshipped all the stars of the sky and served them.

For he built again the high places which Hezekiah his father had broken down, and he reared up altars for Baalim, and made groves, and worshipped all the host of heaven, and served them.

Verse 4

He built altars in the temple of the LORD, about which the LORD had said, 'My name will remain in Jerusalem forever.'

Also he built altars in the house of the LORD, whereof the LORD had said, In Jerusalem shall my name be for ever.

Verse 5

He built altars to all the stars of the sky in both courtyards of the temple of the LORD.

And he built altars for all the host of heaven in the two courts of the house of the LORD.

Verse 6

He sacrificed his sons in the fire in the Valley of Ben Hinnom, practiced divination, sought omens, practiced witchcraft, and consulted mediums and spiritists. He did much evil in the sight of the LORD, provoking him to anger.

And he caused his children to pass through the fire in the valley of the son of Hinnom: also he observed times, and used enchantments, and used witchcraft, and dealt with a familiar spirit, and with wizards: he wrought much evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger.

Verse 7

Manasseh took a carved idol that he had made and placed it in the temple of God, of which God had said to David and to his son Solomon, 'In this temple and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, I will put my Name forever.'

And he set a carved image, the idol which he had made, in the house of God, of which God had said to David and to Solomon his son, In this house, and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen before all the tribes of Israel, will I put my name for ever:

Verse 8

I will not again make the feet of the Israelites wander from the land I gave to their ancestors, if they are careful to do everything I commanded them concerning the whole Law, the statutes, and the judgments given through Moses.

Neither will I any more remove the foot of Israel from out of the land which I have appointed for your fathers; so that they will take heed to do all that I have commanded them, according to the whole law and the statutes and the ordinances by the hand of Moses.

Verse 9

But Manasseh led Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem astray, so that they did more evil than the nations the LORD had destroyed before the Israelites.

So Manasseh made Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to err, and to do worse than the heathen, whom the LORD had destroyed before the children of Israel.

Verse 10

The LORD spoke to Manasseh and his people, but they did not listen.

And the LORD spake to Manasseh, and to his people: but they would not hearken.

Verse 11

So the LORD brought against them the commanders of the army of the king of Assyria. They captured Manasseh with hooks, bound him with bronze shackles, and took him to Babylon.

Wherefore the LORD brought upon them the captains of the host of the king of Assyria, which took Manasseh among the thorns, and bound him with fetters, and carried him to Babylon.

Verse 12

When he was in distress, he sought the favor of the LORD his God and humbled himself greatly before the God of his ancestors.

And when he was in affliction, he besought the LORD his God, and humbled himself greatly before the God of his fathers,

Verse 13

He prayed to Him, and the LORD was moved by his entreaty and heard his plea. He brought Manasseh back to Jerusalem and to his kingdom. Then Manasseh knew that the LORD is God.

And prayed unto him: and he was intreated of him, and heard his supplication, and brought him again to Jerusalem into his kingdom. Then Manasseh knew that the LORD he was God.

Verse 14

Afterward, he rebuilt the outer wall of the City of David west of Gihon in the valley, as far as the entrance of the Fish Gate and surrounding the Ophel. He made it much higher. He also placed military commanders in all the fortified cities in Judah.

Now after this he built a wall without the city of David, on the west side of Gihon, in the valley, even to the entering in at the fish gate, and compassed about Ophel, and raised it up a very great height, and put captains of war in all the fenced cities of Judah.

Verse 15

He removed the foreign gods and the image from the house of the LORD, and all the altars he had built on the hill of the house of the LORD and in Jerusalem, and he threw them outside the city.

And he took away the strange gods, and the idol out of the house of the LORD, and all the altars that he had built in the mount of the house of the LORD, and in Jerusalem, and cast them out of the city.

Verse 16

Then he restored the altar of the LORD and offered on it sacrifices of peace offerings and thanksgiving. And he commanded Judah to worship the LORD, the God of Israel.

And he repaired the altar of the LORD, and sacrificed thereon peace offerings and thank offerings, and commanded Judah to serve the LORD God of Israel.

Verse 17

However, the people still sacrificed at the high places, but only to the LORD their God.

Nevertheless the people did sacrifice still in the high places, yet unto the LORD their God only.

Verse 18

The rest of the acts of Manasseh, including his prayer to his God and the words of the seers who spoke to him in the name of the LORD, the God of Israel, are recorded in the chronicles of the kings of Israel.

Now the rest of the acts of Manasseh, and his prayer unto his God, and the words of the seers that spake to him in the name of the LORD God of Israel, behold, they are written in the book of the kings of Israel.

Verse 19

His prayer and how God was moved by his plea, all his sins and unfaithfulness, the sites where he built high places and set up Asherah poles and carved images before he humbled himself—all these are written in the records of the seers.

His prayer also, and how God was intreated of him, and all his sin, and his trespass, and the places wherein he built high places, and set up groves and graven images, before he was humbled: behold, they are written among the sayings of the seers.

Verse 20

Manasseh rested with his fathers and was buried in his house. And his son Amon became king in his place.

So Manasseh slept with his fathers, and they buried him in his own house: and Amon his son reigned in his stead.

Verse 21

Amon was twenty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned two years in Jerusalem.

Amon was two and twenty years old when he began to reign, and reigned two years in Jerusalem.

Verse 22

He did what was evil in the sight of the LORD, as his father Manasseh had done. Amon worshipped and served all the carved images that his father Manasseh had made.

But he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, as did Manasseh his father: for Amon sacrificed unto all the carved images which Manasseh his father had made, and served them;

Verse 23

But he did not humble himself before the LORD as his father Manasseh had humbled himself; instead, Amon increased his guilt.

And humbled not himself before the LORD, as Manasseh his father had humbled himself; but Amon trespassed more and more.

Verse 24

Then his servants conspired against him and killed him in his own house.

And his servants conspired against him, and slew him in his own house.

Verse 25

But the people of the land struck down all those who had conspired against King Amon, and they made his son Josiah king in his place.

But the people of the land slew all them that had conspired against king Amon; and the people of the land made Josiah his son king in his stead.
