Verse 1
God said to Jacob, "Get up, go to Bethel, and settle there. Build an altar there to the God who appeared to you when you fled from your brother Esau."
And God said unto Jacob, Arise, go up to Bethel, and dwell there: and make there an altar unto God, that appeared unto thee when thou fleddest from the face of Esau thy brother.
Verse 2
So Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, "Get rid of the foreign gods that are among you, purify yourselves, and change your clothes."
Then Jacob said unto his household, and to all that were with him, Put away the strange gods that are among you, and be clean, and change your garments:
Verse 3
"Let us arise and go up to Bethel, and I will build an altar there to the God who answered me in the day of my distress and who has been with me wherever I have gone."
And let us arise, and go up to Bethel; and I will make there an altar unto God, who answered me in the day of my distress, and was with me in the way which I went.
Verse 4
So they gave to Jacob all the foreign gods they had and the earrings they were wearing, and Jacob buried them under the oak tree near Shechem.
And they gave unto Jacob all the strange gods which were in their hand, and all their earrings which were in their ears; and Jacob hid them under the oak which was by Shechem.
Verse 5
As they set out, the terror of God fell on the cities surrounding them, so no one pursued the sons of Jacob.
And they journeyed: and the terror of God was upon the cities that were round about them, and they did not pursue after the sons of Jacob.
Verse 6
Jacob and all the people with him came to Luz (that is Bethel) in the land of Canaan.
So Jacob came to Luz, which is in the land of Canaan, that is, Bethel, he and all the people that were with him.
Verse 7
There he built an altar and named the place El Bethel (God of Bethel), because it was there that God revealed Himself to him when he was fleeing from his brother.
And he built there an altar, and called the place Elbethel: because there God appeared unto him, when he fled from the face of his brother.
Verse 8
Deborah, Rebekah's nurse, died and was buried under the oak below Bethel. So it was named Allon Bacuth (Oak of Weeping).
But Deborah Rebekah's nurse died, and she was buried beneath Bethel under an oak: and the name of it was called Allonbachuth.
Verse 9
God appeared to Jacob again after he returned from Paddan-Aram, and He blessed him.
And God appeared unto Jacob again, when he came out of Padanaram, and blessed him.
Verse 10
God said to him, "Your name is Jacob, but you will no longer be called Jacob; your name will be Israel." So He named him Israel.
And God said unto him, Thy name is Jacob: thy name shall not be called any more Jacob, but Israel shall be thy name: and he called his name Israel.
Verse 11
God said to him, "I am God Almighty. Be fruitful and multiply. A nation, indeed a community of nations, will come from you, and kings will come from your own body."
And God said unto him, I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall be of thee, and kings shall come out of thy loins;
Verse 12
The land that I gave to Abraham and Isaac, I will give to you, and I will also give it to your descendants after you.
And the land which I gave Abraham and Isaac, to thee I will give it, and to thy seed after thee will I give the land.
Verse 13
Then God ascended from him at the place where He had spoken with him.
And God went up from him in the place where he talked with him.
Verse 14
Jacob set up a stone pillar at the place where God had spoken with him. He poured out a drink offering on it and also poured oil on it.
And Jacob set up a pillar in the place where he talked with him, even a pillar of stone: and he poured a drink offering thereon, and he poured oil thereon.
Verse 15
Jacob called the place where God had spoken with him Bethel.
And Jacob called the name of the place where God spake with him, Bethel.
Verse 16
Then they set out from Bethel. While they were still some distance from Ephrath, Rachel began to give birth and had great difficulty.
And they journeyed from Bethel; and there was but a little way to come to Ephrath: and Rachel travailed, and she had hard labour.
Verse 17
During her hard labor, the midwife said to her, "Don’t be afraid, for you have another son!"
And it came to pass, when she was in hard labour, that the midwife said unto her, Fear not; thou shalt have this son also.
Verse 18
As her life was slipping away, because she was dying, she named him Ben-Oni, but his father called him Benjamin.
And it came to pass, as her soul was in departing, (for she died) that she called his name Benoni: but his father called him Benjamin.
Verse 19
So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).
And Rachel died, and was buried in the way to Ephrath, which is Bethlehem.
Verse 20
Jacob set up a pillar on her grave; that pillar marks Rachel's grave to this day.
And Jacob set a pillar upon her grave: that is the pillar of Rachel's grave unto this day.
Verse 21
Israel moved on again and pitched his tent beyond Migdal Eder.
And Israel journeyed, and spread his tent beyond the tower of Edar.
Verse 22
While Israel was living in that region, Reuben went and slept with Bilhah, his father’s concubine, and Israel heard about it. Now Jacob had twelve sons:
And it came to pass, when Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his father's concubine: and Israel heard it. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve:
Verse 23
The sons of Leah: Reuben the firstborn of Jacob, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun.
The sons of Leah; Reuben, Jacob's firstborn, and Simeon, and Levi, and Judah, and Issachar, and Zebulun:
Verse 24
The sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin.
The sons of Rachel; Joseph, and Benjamin:
Verse 25
The sons of Bilhah, Rachel’s servant: Dan and Naphtali.
And the sons of Bilhah, Rachel's handmaid; Dan, and Naphtali:
Verse 26
The sons of Zilpah, Leah’s servant, were Gad and Asher. These are the sons of Jacob who were born to him in Paddan-Aram.
And the sons of Zilpah, Leah's handmaid; Gad, and Asher: these are the sons of Jacob, which were born to him in Padanaram.
Verse 27
Jacob came to his father Isaac at Mamre, near Kiriath-Arba (that is, Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had lived as foreigners.
And Jacob came unto Isaac his father unto Mamre, unto the city of Arbah, which is Hebron, where Abraham and Isaac sojourned.
Verse 28
Isaac lived a total of one hundred and eighty years.
And the days of Isaac were an hundred and fourscore years.
Verse 29
Then Isaac breathed his last and died and was gathered to his people, old and full of years. His sons Esau and Jacob buried him.
And Isaac gave up the ghost, and died, and was gathered unto his people, being old and full of days: and his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.
