Verse 1
Israel set out with everything he had and came to Beersheba, where he offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac.
And Israel took his journey with all that he had, and came to Beersheba, and offered sacrifices unto the God of his father Isaac.
Verse 2
God spoke to Israel in visions during the night, calling, 'Jacob, Jacob!' And he replied, 'Here I am.'
And God spake unto Israel in the visions of the night, and said, Jacob, Jacob. And he said, Here am I.
Verse 3
God said, 'I am God, the God of your father. Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for I will make you into a great nation there.'
And he said, I am God, the God of thy father: fear not to go down into Egypt; for I will there make of thee a great nation:
Verse 4
I will go down to Egypt with you, and I will surely bring you back again. And Joseph will close your eyes with his own hand.
I will go down with thee into Egypt; and I will also surely bring thee up again: and Joseph shall put his hand upon thine eyes.
Verse 5
Then Jacob left Beersheba, and the sons of Israel transported their father Jacob, their children, and their wives in the wagons that Pharaoh had sent to carry him.
And Jacob rose up from Beersheba: and the sons of Israel carried Jacob their father, and their little ones, and their wives, in the wagons which Pharaoh had sent to carry him.
Verse 6
They also took with them their livestock and the possessions they had acquired in Canaan. Jacob and all his descendants went to Egypt.
And they took their cattle, and their goods, which they had gotten in the land of Canaan, and came into Egypt, Jacob, and all his seed with him:
Verse 7
He brought with him to Egypt his sons, his grandsons, his daughters, his granddaughters, and all his descendants.
His sons, and his sons' sons with him, his daughters, and his sons' daughters, and all his seed brought he with him into Egypt.
Verse 8
These are the names of the sons of Israel who went to Egypt with Jacob, his firstborn being Reuben.
And these are the names of the children of Israel, which came into Egypt, Jacob and his sons: Reuben, Jacob's firstborn.
Verse 9
The sons of Reuben were Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi.
And the sons of Reuben; Hanoch, and Phallu, and Hezron, and Carmi.
Verse 10
The sons of Simeon were Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jachin, Zohar, and Shaul—the son of a Canaanite woman.
And the sons of Simeon; Jemuel, and Jamin, and Ohad, and Jachin, and Zohar, and Shaul the son of a Canaanitish woman.
Verse 11
The sons of Levi were Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.
And the sons of Levi; Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.
Verse 12
The sons of Judah were Er, Onan, Shelah, Perez, and Zerah. However, Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan. The sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul.
And the sons of Judah; Er, and Onan, and Shelah, and Pharez, and Zerah: but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan. And the sons of Pharez were Hezron and Hamul.
Verse 13
The sons of Issachar were Tola, Puvah, Job, and Shimron.
And the sons of Issachar; Tola, and Phuvah, and Job, and Shimron.
Verse 14
The sons of Zebulun were Sered, Elon, and Jahleel.
And the sons of Zebulun; Sered, and Elon, and Jahleel.
Verse 15
These were the sons of Leah, whom she bore to Jacob in Paddan Aram, along with his daughter Dinah. Altogether, the number of Leah's descendants, including sons and daughters, was thirty-three.
These be the sons of Leah, which she bare unto Jacob in Padanaram, with his daughter Dinah: all the souls of his sons and his daughters were thirty and three.
Verse 16
The sons of Gad were Ziphion, Haggi, Shuni, Ezbon, Eri, Arodi, and Areli.
And the sons of Gad; Ziphion, and Haggi, Shuni, and Ezbon, Eri, and Arodi, and Areli.
Verse 17
The sons of Asher were Imnah, Ishvah, Ishvi, and Beriah, as well as their sister Serah. The sons of Beriah were Heber and Malkiel.
And the sons of Asher; Jimnah, and Ishuah, and Isui, and Beriah, and Serah their sister: and the sons of Beriah; Heber, and Malchiel.
Verse 18
These were the sons of Zilpah, whom Laban gave to his daughter Leah. She bore these to Jacob—sixteen in all.
These are the sons of Zilpah, whom Laban gave to Leah his daughter, and these she bare unto Jacob, even sixteen souls.
Verse 19
The sons of Rachel, Jacob’s wife, were Joseph and Benjamin.
The sons of Rachel Jacob's wife; Joseph, and Benjamin.
Verse 20
In the land of Egypt, Joseph’s two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim, were born to him by Asenath, daughter of Potiphera, priest of On.
And unto Joseph in the land of Egypt were born Manasseh and Ephraim, which Asenath the daughter of Potipherah priest of On bare unto him.
Verse 21
The sons of Benjamin were Bela, Becher, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim, and Ard.
And the sons of Benjamin were Belah, and Becher, and Ashbel, Gera, and Naaman, Ehi, and Rosh, Muppim, and Huppim, and Ard.
Verse 22
These were the sons of Rachel who were born to Jacob—fourteen in all.
These are the sons of Rachel, which were born to Jacob: all the souls were fourteen.
Verse 23
The sons of Dan: Hushim.
And the sons of Dan; Hushim.
Verse 24
The sons of Naphtali were Jahzeel, Guni, Jezer, and Shillem.
And the sons of Naphtali; Jahzeel, and Guni, and Jezer, and Shillem.
Verse 25
These were the sons of Bilhah, whom Laban had given to his daughter Rachel. She bore these to Jacob—seven in all.
These are the sons of Bilhah, which Laban gave unto Rachel his daughter, and she bare these unto Jacob: all the souls were seven.
Verse 26
All the members of Jacob’s household who went to Egypt, those who were his direct descendants (not counting the wives of his sons), numbered sixty-six persons in total.
All the souls that came with Jacob into Egypt, which came out of his loins, besides Jacob's sons' wives, all the souls were threescore and six;
Verse 27
And the two sons of Joseph, who were born to him in Egypt, brought the total number of Jacob's family who came to Egypt to seventy.
And the sons of Joseph, which were born him in Egypt, were two souls: all the souls of the house of Jacob, which came into Egypt, were threescore and ten.
Verse 28
Jacob sent Judah ahead of him to Joseph to get directions to Goshen. When they arrived in the land of Goshen,
And he sent Judah before him unto Joseph, to direct his face unto Goshen; and they came into the land of Goshen.
Verse 29
Joseph readied his chariot and went to Goshen to meet his father Israel. As soon as Joseph appeared before him, he threw his arms around his father and wept for a long time.
And Joseph made ready his chariot, and went up to meet Israel his father, to Goshen, and presented himself unto him; and he fell on his neck, and wept on his neck a good while.
Verse 30
Then Israel said to Joseph, 'Now I am ready to die, since I have seen your face and know you are still alive.'
And Israel said unto Joseph, Now let me die, since I have seen thy face, because thou art yet alive.
Verse 31
Joseph said to his brothers and to his father’s household, 'I will go up and speak to Pharaoh and will say to him, "My brothers and my father’s household, who were living in the land of Canaan, have come to me.'"
And Joseph said unto his brethren, and unto his father's house, I will go up, and shew Pharaoh, and say unto him, My brethren, and my father's house, which were in the land of Canaan, are come unto me;
Verse 32
The men are shepherds; they tend livestock, and they have brought along their flocks, herds, and everything they own.
And the men are shepherds, for their trade hath been to feed cattle; and they have brought their flocks, and their herds, and all that they have.
Verse 33
'When Pharaoh calls you in and asks, "What is your occupation?"'
And it shall come to pass, when Pharaoh shall call you, and shall say, What is your occupation?
Verse 34
You should answer, 'Your servants have tended livestock from our boyhood on, just as our fathers did.' Then you will be allowed to settle in the region of Goshen, for all shepherds are detestable to the Egyptians.
That ye shall say, Thy servants' trade hath been about cattle from our youth even until now, both we, and also our fathers: that ye may dwell in the land of Goshen; for every shepherd is an abomination unto the Egyptians.
