Verse 1
Ephraim has surrounded me with lies, and the house of Israel with deceit. But Judah still walks with God and is faithful to the Holy One.
Ephraim feedeth on wind, and followeth after the east wind: he daily increaseth lies and desolation; and they do make a covenant with the Assyrians, and oil is carried into Egypt.
Verse 2
Ephraim feeds on the wind and pursues the east wind all day long. They multiply lies and violence, making a covenant with Assyria and sending oil to Egypt.
The LORD hath also a controversy with Judah, and will punish Jacob according to his ways; according to his doings will he recompense him.
Verse 3
The LORD has a charge against Judah and will punish Jacob according to his ways and repay him for his deeds.
He took his brother by the heel in the womb, and by his strength he had power with God:
Verse 4
In the womb, he grasped his brother’s heel; and in his strength, he struggled with God.
Yea, he had power over the angel, and prevailed: he wept, and made supplication unto him: he found him in Bethel, and there he spake with us;
Verse 5
He struggled with the angel and prevailed. He wept and pleaded for favor. He found Him at Bethel, and there He spoke with us.
Even the LORD God of hosts; the LORD is his memorial.
Verse 6
The LORD, the God of hosts—the LORD is his name of renown.
Therefore turn thou to thy God: keep mercy and judgment, and wait on thy God continually.
Verse 7
But you must return to your God; maintain love and justice and wait for your God continually.
He is a merchant, the balances of deceit are in his hand: he loveth to oppress.
Verse 8
Canaan, in whose hands are deceitful scales, loves to defraud.
And Ephraim said, Yet I am become rich, I have found me out substance: in all my labours they shall find none iniquity in me that were sin.
Verse 9
Ephraim says, 'Surely I have become rich; I have found wealth for myself. In all my labors, they cannot find in me iniquity which would be sin.'
And I that am the LORD thy God from the land of Egypt will yet make thee to dwell in tabernacles, as in the days of the solemn feast.
Verse 10
I am the LORD your God from the land of Egypt. I will make you live in tents again, as in the days of the appointed festivals.
I have also spoken by the prophets, and I have multiplied visions, and used similitudes, by the ministry of the prophets.
Verse 11
I spoke through the prophets and gave many visions; through the prophets, I used parables.
Is there iniquity in Gilead? surely they are vanity: they sacrifice bullocks in Gilgal; yea, their altars are as heaps in the furrows of the fields.
Verse 12
If Gilead is wicked, surely they are worthless. In Gilgal they sacrifice bulls—indeed, their altars are like heaps of stone in the furrows of the field.
And Jacob fled into the country of Syria, and Israel served for a wife, and for a wife he kept sheep.
Verse 13
Jacob fled to the country of Aram; there Israel worked for a wife, and for a wife, he tended sheep.
And by a prophet the LORD brought Israel out of Egypt, and by a prophet was he preserved.
Verse 14
But by a prophet the LORD brought Israel out of Egypt, and by a prophet, he was preserved.
Ephraim provoked him to anger most bitterly: therefore shall he leave his blood upon him, and his reproach shall his Lord return unto him.
Verse 15
Ephraim provoked the LORD to bitter anger; his bloodguilt will remain on him, and his Lord will repay him for his disgrace.
