One day, the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them to present himself before the LORD.

Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the LORD.

The LORD said to Satan, 'Where have you come from?' Satan answered the LORD, 'From roaming through the earth and walking back and forth on it.'

And the LORD said unto Satan, From whence comest thou? And Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.

Then the LORD said to Satan, 'Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one like him on earth—blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil. And he still holds fast to his integrity, even though you incited me against him to destroy him without cause.'

And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause.

Satan answered the LORD, 'Skin for skin! A man will give everything he has for his own life.'

And Satan answered the LORD, and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life.

But stretch out your hand and strike his bone and flesh, and he will surely curse you to your face!

But put forth thine hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse thee to thy face.

The LORD said to Satan, 'Very well, he is in your hands; only spare his life.'

And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, he is in thine hand; but save his life.

So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD and afflicted Job with painful sores from the soles of his feet to the crown of his head.

So went Satan forth from the presence of the LORD, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown.

Then Job took a piece of broken pottery to scrape himself as he sat among the ashes.

And he took him a potsherd to scrape himself withal; and he sat down among the ashes.

His wife said to him, 'Are you still maintaining your integrity? Curse God and die!'

Then said his wife unto him, Dost thou still retain thine integrity? curse God, and die.

But he replied, 'You are talking like a foolish woman. Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?' In all this, Job did not sin in what he said.

But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips.

Now when Job's three friends heard about all this calamity that had come upon him, each of them came from his own place—Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite. They met together to come and show him sympathy and comfort.

Now when Job's three friends heard of all this evil that was come upon him, they came every one from his own place; Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite: for they had made an appointment together to come to mourn with him and to comfort him.

When they saw him from a distance, they could not recognize him. They raised their voices and wept. Each of them tore his robe and threw dust on their heads skyward as a sign of grief.

And when they lifted up their eyes afar off, and knew him not, they lifted up their voice, and wept; and they rent every one his mantle, and sprinkled dust upon their heads toward heaven.

Then they sat with him on the ground for seven days and seven nights, and no one spoke a word to him because they saw how very great his suffering was.

So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights, and none spake a word unto him: for they saw that his grief was very great.
