Verse 1
And Job continued speaking his discourse, saying:
Moreover Job continued his parable, and said,
Verse 2
As surely as God lives, who has denied me justice, and the Almighty, who has made my soul bitter,
As God liveth, who hath taken away my judgment; and the Almighty, who hath vexed my soul;
Verse 3
as long as my breath remains in me and the spirit of God is in my nostrils,
All the while my breath is in me, and the spirit of God is in my nostrils;
Verse 4
my lips will not utter injustice, and my tongue will not speak deceit.
My lips shall not speak wickedness, nor my tongue utter deceit.
Verse 5
Far be it from me to justify you. Until my dying breath, I will not set aside my integrity.
God forbid that I should justify you: till I die I will not remove mine integrity from me.
Verse 6
I will hold on to my righteousness and not let it go; my conscience will not reproach me as long as I live.
My righteousness I hold fast, and will not let it go: my heart shall not reproach me so long as I live.
Verse 7
May my enemy be like the wicked and my adversary like the unrighteous!
Let mine enemy be as the wicked, and he that riseth up against me as the unrighteous.
Verse 8
For what hope has the godless when he is cut off, when God takes away his life?
For what is the hope of the hypocrite, though he hath gained, when God taketh away his soul?
Verse 9
Will God listen to his cry when distress comes upon him?
Will God hear his cry when trouble cometh upon him?
Verse 10
Does he delight in the Almighty and call upon God at all times?
Will he delight himself in the Almighty? will he always call upon God?
Verse 11
I will teach you about God's power; I will not conceal what is with the Almighty.
I will teach you by the hand of God: that which is with the Almighty will I not conceal.
Verse 12
Look, all of you have seen this yourselves; why then do you speak nonsense?
Behold, all ye yourselves have seen it; why then are ye thus altogether vain?
Verse 13
This is the portion allocated by God to a wicked man, the inheritance ruthless men will receive from the Almighty:
This is the portion of a wicked man with God, and the heritage of oppressors, which they shall receive of the Almighty.
Verse 14
If his children multiply, it is for the sword, and his offspring will not have enough bread.
If his children be multiplied, it is for the sword: and his offspring shall not be satisfied with bread.
Verse 15
His survivors will be buried in death, and his widows will not weep for them.
Those that remain of him shall be buried in death: and his widows shall not weep.
Verse 16
Though he heaps up silver like dust and piles up clothes like clay,
Though he heap up silver as the dust, and prepare raiment as the clay;
Verse 17
he may prepare it, but the righteous will wear it, and the innocent will divide his silver.
He may prepare it, but the just shall put it on, and the innocent shall divide the silver.
Verse 18
He builds his house like a moth’s cocoon, like a hut made by a watchman.
He buildeth his house as a moth, and as a booth that the keeper maketh.
Verse 19
The rich man lies down, but he will not be gathered; he opens his eyes, and he is no more.
The rich man shall lie down, but he shall not be gathered: he openeth his eyes, and he is not.
Verse 20
Terrors overtake him like a flood; in the night a storm sweeps him away.
Terrors take hold on him as waters, a tempest stealeth him away in the night.
Verse 21
The east wind lifts him up, and he is gone; it sweeps him out of his place.
The east wind carrieth him away, and he departeth: and as a storm hurleth him out of his place.
Verse 22
It hurls itself against him without mercy; he flees desperately from its power.
For God shall cast upon him, and not spare: he would fain flee out of his hand.
Verse 23
It claps its hands at him and hisses at him as he is driven away from his place.
Men shall clap their hands at him, and shall hiss him out of his place.
