Verse 1
Job continued speaking further, saying:
Moreover Job continued his parable, and said,
Verse 2
Oh, that I were as in the months gone by, as in the days when God watched over me,
Oh that I were as in months past, as in the days when God preserved me;
Verse 3
when His lamp shone upon my head, and I walked by His light through the darkness.
When his candle shined upon my head, and when by his light I walked through darkness;
Verse 4
I was as in the prime of my life, when the intimate friendship of God was over my tent.
As I was in the days of my youth, when the secret of God was upon my tabernacle;
Verse 5
The Almighty was still with me, and my children surrounded me.
When the Almighty was yet with me, when my children were about me;
Verse 6
My steps were bathed in cream, and the rock poured out streams of oil for me.
When I washed my steps with butter, and the rock poured me out rivers of oil;
Verse 7
When I went out to the city gate, and took my seat in the public square,
When I went out to the gate through the city, when I prepared my seat in the street!
Verse 8
the young men saw me and stepped aside, and the aged stood and rose to their feet.
The young men saw me, and hid themselves: and the aged arose, and stood up.
Verse 9
Leaders refrained from speaking and laid their hands on their mouths.
The princes refrained talking, and laid their hand on their mouth.
Verse 10
The voices of nobles quieted, and their tongues stuck to the roofs of their mouths.
The nobles held their peace, and their tongue cleaved to the roof of their mouth.
Verse 11
For when the ear heard me, it called me blessed, and when the eye saw me, it gave testimony about me.
When the ear heard me, then it blessed me; and when the eye saw me, it gave witness to me:
Verse 12
Because I rescued the poor who cried for help, and the orphan who had no helper.
Because I delivered the poor that cried, and the fatherless, and him that had none to help him.
Verse 13
The blessing of the one about to perish came upon me, and I made the widow's heart sing for joy.
The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me: and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy.
Verse 14
I put on righteousness, and it clothed me; my justice was like a robe and a turban.
I put on righteousness, and it clothed me: my judgment was as a robe and a diadem.
Verse 15
I was eyes to the blind, and feet to the lame.
I was eyes to the blind, and feet was I to the lame.
Verse 16
I was a father to the needy, and I searched out the case of one I did not know.
I was a father to the poor: and the cause which I knew not I searched out.
Verse 17
I broke the jaws of the wicked and snatched the prey from his teeth.
And I brake the jaws of the wicked, and plucked the spoil out of his teeth.
Verse 18
I said, 'I will die with my nest, and my days will be as numerous as the sand.'
Then I said, I shall die in my nest, and I shall multiply my days as the sand.
Verse 19
My roots spread out to the waters, and the dew stayed overnight on my branches.
My root was spread out by the waters, and the dew lay all night upon my branch.
Verse 20
My glory is renewed within me, and my bow in my hand is made strong again.
My glory was fresh in me, and my bow was renewed in my hand.
Verse 21
People listened to me and waited, and they kept silent for my counsel.
Unto me men gave ear, and waited, and kept silence at my counsel.
Verse 22
After I spoke, they did not speak again, and my words fell gently upon them.
After my words they spake not again; and my speech dropped upon them.
Verse 23
They waited for me as for rain, and they opened their mouths wide for the spring rain.
And they waited for me as for the rain; and they opened their mouth wide as for the latter rain.
Verse 24
When I smiled at them, they could hardly believe it; and the light of my face brought them no discouragement.
If I laughed on them, they believed it not; and the light of my countenance they cast not down.
Verse 25
I chose their way and sat as their chief; I lived as a king among his troops, like one who comforts mourners.
I chose out their way, and sat chief, and dwelt as a king in the army, as one that comforteth the mourners.
