Verse 1
But now, Job, please listen to my words and pay attention to all I have to say.
Wherefore, Job, I pray thee, hear my speeches, and hearken to all my words.
Verse 2
Look, I have opened my mouth; my tongue has spoken in my mouth.
Behold, now I have opened my mouth, my tongue hath spoken in my mouth.
Verse 3
My words come from an upright heart, and my lips speak with clarity.
My words shall be of the uprightness of my heart: and my lips shall utter knowledge clearly.
Verse 4
The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.
The Spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life.
Verse 5
If you can, answer me; prepare yourself before me and take your stand.
If thou canst answer me, set thy words in order before me, stand up.
Verse 6
Look, I am like you before God; I too was formed from clay.
Behold, I am according to thy wish in God's stead: I also am formed out of the clay.
Verse 7
See, no fear of me should terrify you, and the pressure I bring will not be heavy upon you.
Behold, my terror shall not make thee afraid, neither shall my hand be heavy upon thee.
Verse 8
Surely, you have spoken in my hearing, and I have heard your words.
Surely thou hast spoken in mine hearing, and I have heard the voice of thy words, saying,
Verse 9
'I am pure, without sin; I am innocent, and there is no iniquity in me.'
I am clean without transgression, I am innocent; neither is there iniquity in me.
Verse 10
But look, He finds faults against me; He considers me His enemy.
Behold, he findeth occasions against me, he counteth me for his enemy,
Verse 11
He puts my feet in the stocks; He watches all my paths.
He putteth my feet in the stocks, he marketh all my paths.
Verse 12
But I tell you, in this you are not right, for God is greater than a man.
Behold, in this thou art not just: I will answer thee, that God is greater than man.
Verse 13
Why do you contend with Him? For He does not answer all of man's words.
Why dost thou strive against him? for he giveth not account of any of his matters.
Verse 14
For God speaks in one way and in two, yet no one perceives it.
For God speaketh once, yea twice, yet man perceiveth it not.
Verse 15
In a dream, a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls upon men, while they slumber on their beds,
In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed;
Verse 16
then He opens the ears of men and seals their instruction.
Then he openeth the ears of men, and sealeth their instruction,
Verse 17
To turn a man from wrongdoing and to conceal pride from him.
That he may withdraw man from his purpose, and hide pride from man.
Verse 18
He keeps his soul back from the pit and his life from perishing by the sword.
He keepeth back his soul from the pit, and his life from perishing by the sword.
Verse 19
A person is also chastened with pain on their bed and continual aching in their bones.
He is chastened also with pain upon his bed, and the multitude of his bones with strong pain:
Verse 20
Their life begins to loathe food, and their soul rejects even the most desirable meal.
So that his life abhorreth bread, and his soul dainty meat.
Verse 21
Their flesh wastes away so that it can no longer be seen, and their bones, once hidden, now stick out.
His flesh is consumed away, that it cannot be seen; and his bones that were not seen stick out.
Verse 22
Their soul draws near to the pit, and their life to the messengers of death.
Yea, his soul draweth near unto the grave, and his life to the destroyers.
Verse 23
But if there is a messenger for them, a mediator, one among a thousand, to declare to them what is right,
If there be a messenger with him, an interpreter, one among a thousand, to shew unto man his uprightness:
Verse 24
and He is gracious to them, saying, 'Deliver them from going down to the pit; I have found a ransom,'
Then he is gracious unto him, and saith, Deliver him from going down to the pit: I have found a ransom.
Verse 25
then their flesh is restored to be fresher than in youth, and they return to the days of their youthful vigor.
His flesh shall be fresher than a child's: he shall return to the days of his youth:
Verse 26
They pray to God, and He accepts them; they see His face with joy, and He restores His righteousness to them.
He shall pray unto God, and he will be favourable unto him: and he shall see his face with joy: for he will render unto man his righteousness.
Verse 27
They sing before others and say, 'I have sinned and perverted what was right, but it was not repaid to me.'
He looketh upon men, and if any say, I have sinned, and perverted that which was right, and it profited me not;
Verse 28
He redeemed my soul from going down to the pit, and my life will see the light.
He will deliver his soul from going into the pit, and his life shall see the light.
Verse 29
Indeed, God does all these things twice, even three times, with a man,
Lo, all these things worketh God oftentimes with man,
Verse 30
to bring back their soul from the pit, that they may be enlightened with the light of life.
To bring back his soul from the pit, to be enlightened with the light of the living.
Verse 31
Pay attention, Job, listen to me; be silent, and I will speak.
Mark well, O Job, hearken unto me: hold thy peace, and I will speak.
Verse 32
If you have anything to say, answer me; speak up, for I want to justify you.
If thou hast any thing to say, answer me: speak, for I desire to justify thee.
Verse 33
But if not, listen to me; be silent, and I will teach you wisdom.
If not, hearken unto me: hold thy peace, and I shall teach thee wisdom.
