Verse 1
Call now—will anyone answer you? To which of the holy ones will you turn?
Call now, if there be any that will answer thee; and to which of the saints wilt thou turn?
Verse 2
For anger kills the fool, and jealousy slays the simple.
For wrath killeth the foolish man, and envy slayeth the silly one.
Verse 3
I have seen a fool taking root, but suddenly I cursed his home.
I have seen the foolish taking root: but suddenly I cursed his habitation.
Verse 4
His children are far from safety; they are crushed at the gate with no one to deliver them.
His children are far from safety, and they are crushed in the gate, neither is there any to deliver them.
Verse 5
The hungry devour his harvest, even taking it from among thorns; the thirsty swallow his wealth.
Whose harvest the hungry eateth up, and taketh it even out of the thorns, and the robber swalloweth up their substance.
Verse 6
For trouble does not spring from the dust, nor does suffering sprout from the ground.
Although affliction cometh not forth of the dust, neither doth trouble spring out of the ground;
Verse 7
But people are born to trouble, just as sparks fly upward.
Yet man is born unto trouble, as the sparks fly upward.
Verse 8
But I would seek God and place my cause before the Almighty.
I would seek unto God, and unto God would I commit my cause:
Verse 9
He performs great and unsearchable things, wonders without number.
Which doeth great things and unsearchable; marvellous things without number:
Verse 10
He gives rain to the earth and sends water to the fields.
Who giveth rain upon the earth, and sendeth waters upon the fields:
Verse 11
He sets the lowly on high, and those who mourn are lifted to safety.
To set up on high those that be low; that those which mourn may be exalted to safety.
Verse 12
He frustrates the plans of the crafty so that their hands achieve no success.
He disappointeth the devices of the crafty, so that their hands cannot perform their enterprise.
Verse 13
He traps the wise in their own craftiness, and the schemes of the twisted are quickly foiled.
He taketh the wise in their own craftiness: and the counsel of the froward is carried headlong.
Verse 14
They encounter darkness by day and grope in the noonday as if it were night.
They meet with darkness in the daytime, and grope in the noonday as in the night.
Verse 15
He saves the needy from the sword of their mouth and from the hand of the strong.
But he saveth the poor from the sword, from their mouth, and from the hand of the mighty.
Verse 16
So the poor have hope, and injustice shuts its mouth.
So the poor hath hope, and iniquity stoppeth her mouth.
Verse 17
Behold, blessed is the one whom God corrects; so do not despise the discipline of the Almighty.
Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty:
Verse 18
For He wounds, but He also binds up; He injures, but His hands also heal.
For he maketh sore, and bindeth up: he woundeth, and his hands make whole.
Verse 19
He will deliver you from six troubles; in seven, no harm will touch you.
He shall deliver thee in six troubles: yea, in seven there shall no evil touch thee.
Verse 20
In famine, He will redeem you from death, and in battle, from the power of the sword.
In famine he shall redeem thee from death: and in war from the power of the sword.
Verse 21
You will be protected from the scourge of the tongue, and you will not fear destruction when it comes.
Thou shalt be hid from the scourge of the tongue: neither shalt thou be afraid of destruction when it cometh.
Verse 22
You will laugh at destruction and hunger, and you will not fear the beasts of the earth.
At destruction and famine thou shalt laugh: neither shalt thou be afraid of the beasts of the earth.
Verse 23
For you will have a covenant with the stones of the field, and the beasts of the field will be at peace with you.
For thou shalt be in league with the stones of the field: and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with thee.
Verse 24
You will know that your tent is secure; you will inspect your dwelling and find nothing amiss.
And thou shalt know that thy tabernacle shall be in peace; and thou shalt visit thy habitation, and shalt not sin.
Verse 25
You will know that your descendants will be many, and your offspring will be like the grass of the earth.
Thou shalt know also that thy seed shall be great, and thine offspring as the grass of the earth.
Verse 26
You will come to the grave in full vigor, like a sheaf of grain gathered in its season.
Thou shalt come to thy grave in a full age, like as a shock of corn cometh in in his season.
Verse 27
Behold, we have examined this, and it is true. Listen to it and apply it to yourself.
Lo this, we have searched it, so it is; hear it, and know thou it for thy good.
