Verse 1
Remember, LORD, what has happened to us; look and see our disgrace.
Remember, O LORD, what is come upon us: consider, and behold our reproach.
Verse 2
Our inheritance has been turned over to strangers, our homes to foreigners.
Our inheritance is turned to strangers, our houses to aliens.
Verse 3
We have become orphans, without a father; our mothers are like widows.
We are orphans and fatherless, our mothers are as widows.
Verse 4
We must pay for the water we drink; even our wood comes at a price.
We have drunken our water for money; our wood is sold unto us.
Verse 5
We are pursued with burdens upon our necks; we are weary and find no rest.
Our necks are under persecution: we labour, and have no rest.
Verse 6
We submitted to Egypt and Assyria to get enough bread.
We have given the hand to the Egyptians, and to the Assyrians, to be satisfied with bread.
Verse 7
Our ancestors sinned and are no more, but we bear their punishment.
Our fathers have sinned, and are not; and we have borne their iniquities.
Verse 8
Slaves now rule over us, and there is no one to free us from their power.
Servants have ruled over us: there is none that doth deliver us out of their hand.
Verse 9
We risk our lives to bring in our bread because of the sword in the wilderness.
We gat our bread with the peril of our lives because of the sword of the wilderness.
Verse 10
Our skin is hot as an oven, burned from the raging heat of famine.
Our skin was black like an oven because of the terrible famine.
Verse 11
Women in Zion were violated, virgins in the cities of Judah.
They ravished the women in Zion, and the maids in the cities of Judah.
Verse 12
Princes were hung by their hands; elders were shown no respect.
Princes are hanged up by their hand: the faces of elders were not honoured.
Verse 13
Young men toil at the grinding millstones, and boys stumble under heavy loads of wood.
They took the young men to grind, and the children fell under the wood.
Verse 14
The elders have left the city gate, and the young men have ceased their music.
The elders have ceased from the gate, the young men from their musick.
Verse 15
The joy of our hearts has ended; our dancing has turned into mourning.
The joy of our heart is ceased; our dance is turned into mourning.
Verse 16
The crown has fallen from our head. Woe to us, for we have sinned!
The crown is fallen from our head: woe unto us, that we have sinned!
Verse 17
Because of this, our hearts are faint, and our eyes grow dim with tears.
For this our heart is faint; for these things our eyes are dim.
Verse 18
Mount Zion, which lies desolate, is now roamed by foxes.
Because of the mountain of Zion, which is desolate, the foxes walk upon it.
Verse 19
But you, LORD, reign forever; your throne endures from generation to generation.
Thou, O LORD, remainest for ever; thy throne from generation to generation.
Verse 20
Why do you always forget us? Why do you forsake us for so long?
Wherefore dost thou forget us for ever, and forsake us so long time?
Verse 21
Restore us to yourself, LORD, so we may return; renew our days as of old.
Turn thou us unto thee, O LORD, and we shall be turned; renew our days as of old.
Verse 22
Unless you have utterly rejected us and are exceedingly angry with us.
But thou hast utterly rejected us; thou art very wroth against us.
