Verse 1
The LORD said to Moses, 'Speak to the priests, the sons of Aaron, and tell them: A priest shall not defile himself by coming into contact with a dead person among his people.
And the LORD said unto Moses, Speak unto the priests the sons of Aaron, and say unto them, There shall none be defiled for the dead among his people:
Verse 2
Except for a close relative, his mother, his father, his son, his daughter, or his brother.
But for his kin, that is near unto him, that is, for his mother, and for his father, and for his son, and for his daughter, and for his brother,
Verse 3
And also for his virgin sister, who is near to him and has not been married, he may defile himself for her.
And for his sister a virgin, that is nigh unto him, which hath had no husband; for her may he be defiled.
Verse 4
He must not defile himself as a chief man among his people, thereby profaning himself.
But he shall not defile himself, being a chief man among his people, to profane himself.
Verse 5
They must not shave bald spots on their heads, trim the edges of their beards, or make cuts on their bodies.
They shall not make baldness upon their head, neither shall they shave off the corner of their beard, nor make any cuttings in their flesh.
Verse 6
They must be holy to their God and must not profane the name of their God. They offer the food offerings of the LORD, the bread of their God, and so they must be holy.
They shall be holy unto their God, and not profane the name of their God: for the offerings of the LORD made by fire, and the bread of their God, they do offer: therefore they shall be holy.
Verse 7
They must not marry a woman who is a prostitute or has been profaned, nor may they marry a divorced woman, because priests are holy to their God.
They shall not take a wife that is a whore, or profane; neither shall they take a woman put away from her husband: for he is holy unto his God.
Verse 8
You shall sanctify him, for he brings the bread of your God. He shall be holy to you because I, the LORD who sanctifies you, am holy.
Thou shalt sanctify him therefore; for he offereth the bread of thy God: he shall be holy unto thee: for I the LORD, which sanctify you, am holy.
Verse 9
If a priest's daughter defiles herself by becoming a prostitute, she profanes her father and must be burned with fire.
And the daughter of any priest, if she profane herself by playing the whore, she profaneth her father: she shall be burnt with fire.
Verse 10
The high priest, who has the oil of anointing poured on his head and who has been consecrated to wear the sacred garments, must not let his hair become unkempt or tear his clothes.
And he that is the high priest among his brethren, upon whose head the anointing oil was poured, and that is consecrated to put on the garments, shall not uncover his head, nor rend his clothes;
Verse 11
He must not go near any dead body or make himself unclean, even for his father or his mother.
Neither shall he go in to any dead body, nor defile himself for his father, or for his mother;
Verse 12
He must not leave the sanctuary or defile the sanctuary of his God, for the consecration of the anointing oil of his God is on him. I am the LORD.
Neither shall he go out of the sanctuary, nor profane the sanctuary of his God; for the crown of the anointing oil of his God is upon him: I am the LORD.
Verse 13
He must marry a woman who is a virgin.
And he shall take a wife in her virginity.
Verse 14
He must not marry a widow, a divorced woman, a woman who has been defiled, or a prostitute. He may only marry a virgin from among his own people.
A widow, or a divorced woman, or profane, or an harlot, these shall he not take: but he shall take a virgin of his own people to wife.
Verse 15
He must not defile his descendants among his people, because I am the LORD who sanctifies him.
Neither shall he profane his seed among his people: for I the LORD do sanctify him.
Verse 16
The LORD spoke to Moses, saying:
And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
Verse 17
Speak to Aaron and say: None of your descendants through their generations who has a defect may come near to offer the food of his God.
Speak unto Aaron, saying, Whosoever he be of thy seed in their generations that hath any blemish, let him not approach to offer the bread of his God.
Verse 18
For no man who has a defect may approach: no man who is blind, lame, disfigured, or deformed.
For whatsoever man he be that hath a blemish, he shall not approach: a blind man, or a lame, or he that hath a flat nose, or any thing superfluous,
Verse 19
No man with a broken foot or a broken hand,
Or a man that is brokenfooted, or brokenhanded,
Verse 20
or who is hunchbacked, a dwarf, has an eye defect, severe skin diseases, or damaged testicles.
Or crookbackt, or a dwarf, or that hath a blemish in his eye, or be scurvy, or scabbed, or hath his stones broken;
Verse 21
No man of the offspring of Aaron the priest who has a defect may approach to bring the offerings made by fire to the LORD. He has a defect; he must not approach to offer the food of his God.
No man that hath a blemish of the seed of Aaron the priest shall come nigh to offer the offerings of the LORD made by fire: he hath a blemish; he shall not come nigh to offer the bread of his God.
Verse 22
He may eat the food of his God, both the most holy and the holy,
He shall eat the bread of his God, both of the most holy, and of the holy.
Verse 23
but he must not enter behind the curtain or come near the altar because he has a defect. He must not profane My sanctuary, for I am the LORD who makes them holy.
Only he shall not go in unto the vail, nor come nigh unto the altar, because he hath a blemish; that he profane not my sanctuaries: for I the LORD do sanctify them.
Verse 24
So Moses spoke this to Aaron, his sons, and all the Israelites.
And Moses told it unto Aaron, and to his sons, and unto all the children of Israel.
