Once again, Jesus began to teach by the sea, and a very large crowd gathered around him. So he got into a boat and sat in it on the sea, while the whole crowd was on the shore by the water.
And he began again to teach by the sea side: and there was gathered unto him a great multitude, so that he entered into a ship, and sat in the sea; and the whole multitude was by the sea on the land.
He taught them many things in parables, and in his teaching, he told them:
And he taught them many things by parables, and said unto them in his doctrine,
Listen! A sower went out to sow.
Hearken; Behold, there went out a sower to sow:
As he was sowing, some seed fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up.
And it came to pass, as he sowed, some fell by the way side, and the fowls of the air came and devoured it up.
Other seed fell on rocky ground, where it didn’t have much soil. It sprang up quickly because the soil was shallow.
And some fell on stony ground, where it had not much earth; and immediately it sprang up, because it had no depth of earth:
But when the sun came up, it was scorched, and because it had no root, it withered away.
But when the sun was up, it was scorched; and because it had no root, it withered away.
Other seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, so it didn’t produce any grain.
And some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up, and choked it, and it yielded no fruit.
Still other seed fell on good soil. It grew, producing fruit that increased and yielded thirty, sixty, and a hundred times what was sown.
And other fell on good ground, and did yield fruit that sprang up and increased; and brought forth, some thirty, and some sixty, and some an hundred.
Then Jesus said, "Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear."
And he said unto them, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
When he was alone, those around him, along with the twelve, asked him about the parable.
And when he was alone, they that were about him with the twelve asked of him the parable.
He answered them, "The mystery of the kingdom of God has been given to you, but to those outside, everything is spoken in parables.
And he said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables:
"So that, 'Though they see, they may see and not perceive; and though they hear, they may hear and not understand; otherwise they might turn back and be forgiven.'
That seeing they may see, and not perceive; and hearing they may hear, and not understand; lest at any time they should be converted, and their sins should be forgiven them.
He said to them, "Don’t you understand this parable? How then will you understand all the parables?
And he said unto them, Know ye not this parable? and how then will ye know all parables?
The sower sows the word.
The sower soweth the word.
These are the ones along the path where the word is sown: When they hear, immediately Satan comes and takes away the word that was sown in their hearts.
And these are they by the way side, where the word is sown; but when they have heard, Satan cometh immediately, and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts.
In a similar way, these are the ones sown on rocky ground: when they hear the word, they immediately receive it with joy.
And these are they likewise which are sown on stony ground; who, when they have heard the word, immediately receive it with gladness;
But they have no root in themselves; they are short-lived. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they immediately fall away.
And have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time: afterward, when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word's sake, immediately they are offended.
Others are like the seed sown among thorns: these are the ones who hear the word,
And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word,
but the worries of this age, the deceitfulness of wealth, and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.
And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.
But those sown on good ground are the ones who hear the word, welcome it, and produce fruit—some thirty, some sixty, and some a hundred times what was sown.
And these are they which are sown on good ground; such as hear the word, and receive it, and bring forth fruit, some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some an hundred.
He also said to them, "Is a lamp brought in to be put under a basket or under a bed? Isn’t it to be put on a lampstand?
And he said unto them, Is a candle brought to be put under a bushel, or under a bed? and not to be set on a candlestick?
For nothing is hidden that will not be revealed, and nothing is concealed that will not be brought to light.
For there is nothing hid, which shall not be manifested; neither was any thing kept secret, but that it should come abroad.
If anyone has ears to hear, let them hear.
If any man have ears to hear, let him hear.
He said to them, "Pay attention to what you hear. By the measure you use, it will be measured to you—and more will be added to you.
And he said unto them, Take heed what ye hear: with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you: and unto you that hear shall more be given.
For whoever has, more will be given to him; and whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.
For he that hath, to him shall be given: and he that hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he hath.
He also said, "The kingdom of God is like this: A man scatters seed on the ground.
And he said, So is the kingdom of God, as if a man should cast seed into the ground;
He sleeps and rises—night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows—he doesn’t know how.
And should sleep, and rise night and day, and the seed should spring and grow up, he knoweth not how.
The soil produces a crop by itself—first the blade, then the head, and then the full grain on the head.
For the earth bringeth forth fruit of herself; first the blade, then the ear, after that the full corn in the ear.
As soon as the crop is ready, he sends for the sickle because the harvest has come.
But when the fruit is brought forth, immediately he putteth in the sickle, because the harvest is come.
He also said, 'To what can we compare the kingdom of God? Or with what parable can we illustrate it?'
And he said, Whereunto shall we liken the kingdom of God? or with what comparison shall we compare it?
It is like a mustard seed, which, when sown on the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth.
It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when it is sown in the earth, is less than all the seeds that be in the earth:
But when it is sown, it grows up and becomes larger than all the garden plants, and puts out large branches, so that the birds of the sky can nest in its shade.
But when it is sown, it groweth up, and becometh greater than all herbs, and shooteth out great branches; so that the fowls of the air may lodge under the shadow of it.
With many such parables, he spoke the word to them, as much as they were able to understand.
And with many such parables spake he the word unto them, as they were able to hear it.
He did not speak to them without a parable. But privately, he explained everything to his disciples.
But without a parable spake he not unto them: and when they were alone, he expounded all things to his disciples.
On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, 'Let us go across to the other side.'
And the same day, when the even was come, he saith unto them, Let us pass over unto the other side.
Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along in the boat just as he was. Other small boats were also with him.
And when they had sent away the multitude, they took him even as he was in the ship. And there were also with him other little ships.
A great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling up.
And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full.
But he was in the stern, sleeping on the cushion. They woke him up and said to him, 'Teacher, don’t you care that we are perishing?'
And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish?
He got up, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, 'Peace! Be still!' Then the wind died down, and it was completely calm.
And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.
He said to them, 'Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?'
And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?
They were terrified and asked one another, 'Who then is this? Even the wind and the sea obey him!'
And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?
