Verse 1
Better a dry piece of bread with peace than a house full of feasting accompanied by strife.
Better is a dry morsel, and quietness therewith, than an house full of sacrifices with strife.
Verse 2
A wise servant will rule over a disgraceful son and will share in the inheritance among the brothers.
A wise servant shall have rule over a son that causeth shame, and shall have part of the inheritance among the brethren.
Verse 3
A crucible for silver and a furnace for gold, but the Lord tests hearts.
The fining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold: but the LORD trieth the hearts.
Verse 4
A wicked person listens to deceitful lips; a liar pays attention to a destructive tongue.
A wicked doer giveth heed to false lips; and a liar giveth ear to a naughty tongue.
Verse 5
Whoever mocks the poor insults their Maker; whoever rejoices at calamity will not go unpunished.
Whoso mocketh the poor reproacheth his Maker: and he that is glad at calamities shall not be unpunished.
Verse 6
Children’s children are the crown of the elderly, and the glory of children is their parents.
Children's children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers.
Verse 7
Eloquent speech is not fitting for a fool; how much less deceitful speech for a ruler!
Excellent speech becometh not a fool: much less do lying lips a prince.
Verse 8
A bribe is like a precious gem in the eyes of its giver; wherever it turns, it prospers.
A gift is as a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it: whithersoever it turneth, it prospereth.
Verse 9
Whoever covers an offense seeks love, but whoever repeats a matter separates close friends.
He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter separateth very friends.
Verse 10
A rebuke goes deeper into one who has understanding than a hundred lashes into a fool.
A reproof entereth more into a wise man than an hundred stripes into a fool.
Verse 11
A rebellious person seeks only evil, so a cruel messenger will be sent against them.
An evil man seeketh only rebellion: therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him.
Verse 12
Better to meet a bear robbed of her cubs than a fool in his folly.
Let a bear robbed of her whelps meet a man, rather than a fool in his folly.
Verse 13
If anyone returns evil for good, evil will never depart from their house.
Whoso rewardeth evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.
Verse 14
Starting a quarrel is like letting out water; so stop the dispute before it breaks out.
The beginning of strife is as when one letteth out water: therefore leave off contention, before it be meddled with.
Verse 15
Acquitting the guilty and condemning the righteous—both are detestable to the Lord.
He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the just, even they both are abomination to the LORD.
Verse 16
Why should a fool pay for wisdom when he has no intention of understanding it?
Wherefore is there a price in the hand of a fool to get wisdom, seeing he hath no heart to it?
Verse 17
A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity.
A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
Verse 18
A person who lacks sense shakes hands in pledge and puts up security for their neighbor.
A man void of understanding striketh hands, and becometh surety in the presence of his friend.
Verse 19
Whoever loves transgression loves strife; whoever builds a high gate invites destruction.
He loveth transgression that loveth strife: and he that exalteth his gate seeketh destruction.
Verse 20
A crooked heart will not find good, and the one with a deceitful tongue will fall into trouble.
He that hath a froward heart findeth no good: and he that hath a perverse tongue falleth into mischief.
Verse 21
The one who fathers a fool brings grief; the father of a senseless child has no joy.
He that begetteth a fool doeth it to his sorrow: and the father of a fool hath no joy.
Verse 22
A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.
A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.
Verse 23
The wicked accept a bribe in secret to pervert the ways of justice.
A wicked man taketh a gift out of the bosom to pervert the ways of judgment.
Verse 24
Wisdom is before the face of the discerning, but the eyes of a fool are on the ends of the earth.
Wisdom is before him that hath understanding; but the eyes of a fool are in the ends of the earth.
Verse 25
A foolish son brings grief to his father and bitterness to the mother who bore him.
A foolish son is a grief to his father, and bitterness to her that bare him.
Verse 26
It is not good to punish the righteous or to strike nobles for their integrity.
Also to punish the just is not good, nor to strike princes for equity.
Verse 27
The one who holds back his words has knowledge, and the one who is calm in spirit is a person of understanding.
He that hath knowledge spareth his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit.
Verse 28
Even a fool is considered wise if they keep silent, and discerning when they shut their lips.
Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.
