Verse 1
Wine is a mocker, strong drink is a brawler, and whoever is led astray by them is not wise.
Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.
Verse 2
The roar of a king is like the growl of a young lion; whoever provokes him to anger risks his life.
The fear of a king is as the roaring of a lion: whoso provoketh him to anger sinneth against his own soul.
Verse 3
It is honorable for a person to avoid strife, but every fool is quick to quarrel.
It is an honour for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling.
Verse 4
The sluggard does not plow in the winter; at harvest time he looks for something, but finds nothing.
The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing.
Verse 5
The purposes of a person's heart are deep waters, but a person of understanding draws them out.
Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out.
Verse 6
Many claim to have steadfast love, but a faithful person who can find?
Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find?
Verse 7
The righteous person walks in their integrity; blessed are their children after them.
The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him.
Verse 8
A king who sits on the throne of judgment disperses all evil with his eyes.
A king that sitteth in the throne of judgment scattereth away all evil with his eyes.
Verse 9
Who can say, 'I have cleansed my heart; I am pure from my sin'?
Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?
Verse 10
Differing weights and differing measures—both are detestable to the Lord.
Divers weights, and divers measures, both of them are alike abomination to the LORD.
Verse 11
Even a young person is known by their actions—whether their conduct is pure and upright.
Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.
Verse 12
The hearing ear and the seeing eye—the Lord has made both of them.
The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the LORD hath made even both of them.
Verse 13
Do not love sleep, lest you become poor; open your eyes, and you will have plenty of bread.
Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; open thine eyes, and thou shalt be satisfied with bread.
Verse 14
'It’s no good, it’s no good!' says the buyer; then he goes away and boasts about the deal.
It is naught, it is naught, saith the buyer: but when he is gone his way, then he boasteth.
Verse 15
There is gold and an abundance of jewels, but lips of knowledge are a precious treasure.
There is gold, and a multitude of rubies: but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.
Verse 16
Take a garment as security from one who guarantees a stranger's debt; hold it in pledge if it is for a foreign woman.
Take his garment that is surety for a stranger: and take a pledge of him for a strange woman.
Verse 17
Food gained by deceit is sweet to a person, but afterward their mouth is full of gravel.
Bread of deceit is sweet to a man; but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.
Verse 18
Plans are established by counsel; with wise guidance wage your war.
Every purpose is established by counsel: and with good advice make war.
Verse 19
A gossip betrays a confidence, so avoid anyone who talks too much.
He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips.
Verse 20
Whoever curses their father or mother, their lamp will be extinguished in utter darkness.
Whoso curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness.
Verse 21
An inheritance gained hastily at the beginning will not be blessed at the end.
An inheritance may be gotten hastily at the beginning; but the end thereof shall not be blessed.
Verse 22
Do not say, 'I will repay evil'; wait for the Lord, and He will deliver you.
Say not thou, I will recompense evil; but wait on the LORD, and he shall save thee.
Verse 23
Differing weights are an abomination to the Lord, and deceitful scales are not good.
Divers weights are an abomination unto the LORD; and a false balance is not good.
Verse 24
A person's steps are directed by the Lord; how then can anyone understand their own way?
Man's goings are of the LORD; how can a man then understand his own way?
Verse 25
It is a trap for someone to dedicate something rashly and only later to reconsider their vows.
It is a snare to the man who devoureth that which is holy, and after vows to make enquiry.
Verse 26
A wise king winnows out the wicked; he drives the threshing wheel over them.
A wise king scattereth the wicked, and bringeth the wheel over them.
Verse 27
The spirit of a person is the lamp of the Lord, searching their inmost being.
The spirit of man is the candle of the LORD, searching all the inward parts of the belly.
Verse 28
Loyalty and faithfulness preserve a king, and his throne is upheld by steadfast love.
Mercy and truth preserve the king: and his throne is upholden by mercy.
Verse 29
The glory of young men is their strength, and the splendor of old men is their gray hair.
The glory of young men is their strength: and the beauty of old men is the gray head.
Verse 30
Blows that wound cleanse away evil; they purge the innermost being.
The blueness of a wound cleanseth away evil: so do stripes the inward parts of the belly.
