Verse 1
A prayer of an afflicted person, when they are overwhelmed and pour out their complaint before the LORD.
Hear my prayer, O LORD, and let my cry come unto thee.
Verse 2
LORD, hear my prayer, and let my cry for help come to you.
Hide not thy face from me in the day when I am in trouble; incline thine ear unto me: in the day when I call answer me speedily.
Verse 3
Do not hide your face from me in the day of my distress; incline your ear to me; on the day I call, answer me quickly.
For my days are consumed like smoke, and my bones are burned as an hearth.
Verse 4
For my days vanish like smoke, and my bones are burned like a hearth.
My heart is smitten, and withered like grass; so that I forget to eat my bread.
Verse 5
My heart is afflicted and withered like grass, for I forget to eat my food.
By reason of the voice of my groaning my bones cleave to my skin.
Verse 6
Because of my groaning, my bones cling to my flesh.
I am like a pelican of the wilderness: I am like an owl of the desert.
Verse 7
I am like a desert owl, like an owl among the ruins.
I watch, and am as a sparrow alone upon the house top.
Verse 8
I lie awake; I am like a lonely bird on a housetop.
Mine enemies reproach me all the day; and they that are mad against me are sworn against me.
Verse 9
All day long my enemies taunt me; those who ridicule me use my name as a curse.
For I have eaten ashes like bread, and mingled my drink with weeping,
Verse 10
For I eat ashes as my food and mix my drink with tears.
Because of thine indignation and thy wrath: for thou hast lifted me up, and cast me down.
Verse 11
Because of your wrath and indignation, for you have lifted me up and thrown me aside.
My days are like a shadow that declineth; and I am withered like grass.
Verse 12
My days are like a shadow that lengthens, and I wither away like grass.
But thou, O LORD, shalt endure for ever; and thy remembrance unto all generations.
Verse 13
But you, LORD, are enthroned forever, and your name endures to all generations.
Thou shalt arise, and have mercy upon Zion: for the time to favour her, yea, the set time, is come.
Verse 14
You will arise and have compassion on Zion, for it is time to show her favor; the appointed time has come.
For thy servants take pleasure in her stones, and favour the dust thereof.
Verse 15
For your servants delight in her stones and show favor to her dust.
So the heathen shall fear the name of the LORD, and all the kings of the earth thy glory.
Verse 16
The nations will fear the name of the LORD, and all the kings of the earth your glory.
When the LORD shall build up Zion, he shall appear in his glory.
Verse 17
For the LORD has rebuilt Zion and has appeared in his glory.
He will regard the prayer of the destitute, and not despise their prayer.
Verse 18
The LORD has turned to the prayer of the destitute and has not despised their prayer.
This shall be written for the generation to come: and the people which shall be created shall praise the LORD.
Verse 19
Let this be written for a future generation, so that a people yet to be created may praise the LORD.
For he hath looked down from the height of his sanctuary; from heaven did the LORD behold the earth;
Verse 20
For he looked down from his holy height; from heaven the LORD observed the earth,
To hear the groaning of the prisoner; to loose those that are appointed to death;
Verse 21
to hear the groans of the prisoners and to set free those condemned to death,
To declare the name of the LORD in Zion, and his praise in Jerusalem;
Verse 22
so that the name of the LORD will be declared in Zion and his praise in Jerusalem,
When the people are gathered together, and the kingdoms, to serve the LORD.
Verse 23
when peoples and kingdoms gather together to serve the LORD.
He weakened my strength in the way; he shortened my days.
Verse 24
He has afflicted my strength in the way; he has shortened my days.
I said, O my God, take me not away in the midst of my days: thy years are throughout all generations.
Verse 25
I say, 'My God, do not take me away in the midst of my days, your years endure through all generations.'
Of old hast thou laid the foundation of the earth: and the heavens are the work of thy hands.
Verse 26
Long ago you laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands.
They shall perish, but thou shalt endure: yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; as a vesture shalt thou change them, and they shall be changed:
Verse 27
They will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment. Like clothing you will change them, and they will be discarded.
But thou art the same, and thy years shall have no end.
Verse 28
But you are the same, and your years will never end.
The children of thy servants shall continue, and their seed shall be established before thee.
Verse 29
The children of your servants will dwell securely, and their descendants will be established before you.
