Verse 1
To the chief musician, accompanied by stringed instruments, a contemplative psalm of David.
Give ear to my prayer, O God; and hide not thyself from my supplication.
Verse 2
Listen to my prayer, O God, and do not ignore my plea for mercy.
Attend unto me, and hear me: I mourn in my complaint, and make a noise;
Verse 3
Pay attention to me and answer me. My thoughts are restless, and I am distraught.
Because of the voice of the enemy, because of the oppression of the wicked: for they cast iniquity upon me, and in wrath they hate me.
Verse 4
From the voice of the enemy, and from the oppression of the wicked—for they bring down trouble on me and in their anger they hate me.
My heart is sore pained within me: and the terrors of death are fallen upon me.
Verse 5
My heart trembles within me, and the terrors of death have fallen upon me.
Fearfulness and trembling are come upon me, and horror hath overwhelmed me.
Verse 6
Fear and trembling have come upon me, and horror has overwhelmed me.
And I said, Oh that I had wings like a dove! for then would I fly away, and be at rest.
Verse 7
I said, 'Oh, that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and find rest.'
Lo, then would I wander far off, and remain in the wilderness. Selah.
Verse 8
See, I would flee far away; I would stay in the wilderness forever. Selah.
I would hasten my escape from the windy storm and tempest.
Verse 9
I would hurry to a place of refuge, away from the stormy wind and tempest.
Destroy, O Lord, and divide their tongues: for I have seen violence and strife in the city.
Verse 10
Confuse, O Lord, and divide their speech, for I have seen violence and strife in the city.
Day and night they go about it upon the walls thereof: mischief also and sorrow are in the midst of it.
Verse 11
Day and night they surround it on its walls, and trouble and wickedness are within it.
Wickedness is in the midst thereof: deceit and guile depart not from her streets.
Verse 12
Destruction is in its midst; oppression and deceit do not leave its streets.
For it was not an enemy that reproached me; then I could have borne it: neither was it he that hated me that did magnify himself against me; then I would have hid myself from him:
Verse 13
For it is not an enemy who insults me—then I could bear it; it is not one who hates me who has exalted himself against me—then I could hide from him.
But it was thou, a man mine equal, my guide, and mine acquaintance.
Verse 14
But it is you, a man like me, my companion and my close friend.
We took sweet counsel together, and walked unto the house of God in company.
Verse 15
We used to share close communion together; we walked with the crowd in the house of God.
Let death seize upon them, and let them go down quick into hell: for wickedness is in their dwellings, and among them.
Verse 16
May death seize them suddenly; let them go down alive into Sheol, for evil is in their dwelling and within them.
As for me, I will call upon God; and the LORD shall save me.
Verse 17
But I call to God, and the Lord will save me.
Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and he shall hear my voice.
Verse 18
Evening, morning, and noon, I will complain and moan, and He hears my voice.
He hath delivered my soul in peace from the battle that was against me: for there were many with me.
Verse 19
He has redeemed my soul in peace from the battle against me, for many are with me.
God shall hear, and afflict them, even he that abideth of old. Selah. Because they have no changes, therefore they fear not God.
Verse 20
God will hear and humble them—He who is enthroned from of old—Selah. They do not change and do not fear God.
He hath put forth his hands against such as be at peace with him: he hath broken his covenant.
Verse 21
He has put forth his hands against those who were at peace with him; he has violated his covenant.
The words of his mouth were smoother than butter, but war was in his heart: his words were softer than oil, yet were they drawn swords.
Verse 22
His speech was smoother than butter, but war was in his heart; his words were softer than oil, yet they were drawn swords.
Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.
Verse 23
Cast your burden upon the LORD, and He will sustain you. He will never let the righteous be shaken.
But thou, O God, shalt bring them down into the pit of destruction: bloody and deceitful men shall not live out half their days; but I will trust in thee.
Verse 24
But You, O God, will bring them down to the pit of destruction; men of bloodshed and deceit will not live out half their days. But as for me, I will trust in You.
