Moses kalte til seg hele Israel og sa til dem: Hør, Israel, forskriftene og budene som jeg taler i deres ører i dag, så dere kan lære dem og følge dem.

Moses called to all Israel, and said to them, Hear, Israel, the statutes and the ordinances which I speak in your ears this day, that you may learn them, and observe to do them.

Herren vår Gud inngikk en pakt med oss på Horeb.

Yahweh our God made a covenant with us in Horeb.

Herren gjorde ikke denne pakten med våre fedre, men med oss, vi som alle lever her i dag.

Yahweh didn't make this covenant with our fathers, but with us, even us, who are all of us here alive this day.

Herren talte med dere ansikt til ansikt på fjellet, midt ut av ilden.

Yahweh spoke with you face to face on the mountain out of the midst of the fire,

(Jeg sto mellom Herren og dere på den tiden for å kunngjøre dere Herrens ord: for dere var redde på grunn av ilden og gikk ikke opp på fjellet), og sa:

(I stood between Yahweh and you at that time, to show you the word of Yahweh: for you were afraid because of the fire, and didn't go up onto the mountain;) saying,

"Jeg er Herren din Gud, som førte deg ut av Egypt, ut av trellehuset.

"I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

Du skal ikke ha andre guder enn meg.

You shall have no other gods before me.

"Du skal ikke lage deg noe utskåret bilde eller liknelse av noe som er i himmelen der oppe, eller på jorden der nede, eller i vannet under jorden.

"You shall not make an engraved image for yourself, [nor] any likeness [of anything] that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:

Du skal ikke tilbe dem og ikke tjene dem; for jeg, Herren din Gud, er en nidkjær Gud, som straffer fedrenes misgjerninger på barna, til tredje og fjerde ledd av dem som hater meg;

you shall not bow down yourself to them, nor serve them; for I, Yahweh, your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, and on the third and on the fourth generation of those who hate me;

men viser miskunn mot tusener av dem som elsker meg og holder mine bud.

and showing loving kindness to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.

"Du skal ikke misbruke Herren din Guds navn: for Herren vil ikke holde den uskyldig som misbruker hans navn.

"You shall not take the name of Yahweh your God in vain: for Yahweh will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.

"Hold sabbatsdagen hellig, slik som Herren din Gud har befalt deg.

"Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as Yahweh your God commanded you.

Seks dager skal du arbeide og gjøre alt ditt arbeid:

Six days shall you labor, and do all your work;

men den syvende dagen er sabbat for Herren din Gud, da skal du ikke gjøre noe arbeid, verken du eller din sønn eller din datter eller din tjenestegutt eller din tjenestepike eller din okse eller din esel eller noen av ditt husdyr, eller den fremmede som er innenfor dine porter; for at din tjenestegutt og din tjenestepike kan hvile, som du.

but the seventh day is a Sabbath to Yahweh your God: [in it] you shall not do any work, you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your man-servant, nor your maid-servant, nor your ox, nor your donkey, nor any of your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates; that your man-servant and your maid-servant may rest as well as you.

Du skal huske at du var en slave i Egypt, og Herren din Gud førte deg ut derfra med sterk hånd og utstrakt arm. Derfor har Herren din Gud befalt deg å holde sabbatsdagen.

You shall remember that you were a servant in the land of Egypt, and Yahweh your God brought you out of there by a mighty hand and by an outstretched arm: therefore Yahweh your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.

"Hedre din far og din mor, slik som Herren din Gud har befalt deg, for at dine dager kan bli lange, og det må gå deg vel i det landet Herren din Gud gir deg.

"Honor your father and your mother, as Yahweh your God commanded you; that your days may be long, and that it may go well with you, in the land which Yahweh your God gives you.

"Du skal ikke drepe.

"You shall not murder.

"Du skal ikke bryte ekteskapet.

"Neither shall you commit adultery.

"Du skal ikke stjele.

"Neither shall you steal.

"Du skal ikke bære falskt vitnesbyrd mot din neste.

"Neither shall you give false testimony against your neighbor.

"Du skal ikke begjære din nestes hustru, og du skal ikke begjære din nestes hus, hans mark, eller hans tjenestegutt eller hans tjenestepike, hans okse eller hans esel, eller noe som hører din neste til."

"Neither shall you covet your neighbor's wife; neither shall you desire your neighbor's house, his field, or his man-servant, or his maid-servant, his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor's."

Disse ordene talte Herren til hele deres forsamling på fjellet, midt ut av ilden, skyen og den tykke mørket, med høy røst: og han la ikke til noe mer. Han skrev dem på to steintavler og ga dem til meg.

These words Yahweh spoke to all your assembly on the mountain out of the midst of the fire, of the cloud, and of the thick darkness, with a great voice: and he added no more. He wrote them on two tables of stone, and gave them to me.

Det skjedde, da dere hørte røsten midt ut av mørket, mens fjellet brant med ild, at dere nærmet dere meg, alle deres stammeoverhoder og eldste;

It happened, when you heard the voice out of the midst of the darkness, while the mountain was burning with fire, that you came near to me, even all the heads of your tribes, and your elders;

og dere sa: Se, Herren vår Gud har vist oss sin herlighet og storhet, og vi har hørt hans røst midt ut av ilden: vi har sett i dag at Gud taler med mennesker, og de lever.

and you said, Behold, Yahweh our God has shown us his glory and his greatness, and we have heard his voice out of the midst of the fire: we have seen this day that God does speak with man, and he lives.

Hvorfor skal vi da dø? For denne store ilden vil fortære oss: dersom vi hører Herrens, vår Guds røst, mer, så dør vi.

Now therefore why should we die? for this great fire will consume us: if we hear the voice of Yahweh our God any more, then we shall die.

For hvem blant alt kjød har hørt den levende Guds røst tale midt ut av ilden, slik som vi har, og levd?

For who is there of all flesh, that has heard the voice of the living God speaking out of the midst of the fire, as we have, and lived?

Gå nærmere og hør alt som Herren vår Gud vil si: og tal du til oss alt som Herren vår Gud vil tale til deg; vi vil høre det og gjøre det.

Go you near, and hear all that Yahweh our God shall say: and speak you to us all that Yahweh our God shall speak to you; and we will hear it, and do it.

Herren hørte ordene dere sa til meg; og Herren sa til meg: Jeg har hørt ordene til dette folket, som de har talt til deg: de har talt godt i alt det de har sagt.

Yahweh heard the voice of your words, when you spoke to me; and Yahweh said to me, I have heard the voice of the words of this people, which they have spoken to you: they have well said all that they have spoken.

Å, at de bare ville ha et slikt hjerte til å frykte meg og alltid holde alle mine bud, så det må gå dem vel og deres barn for alltid!

Oh that there were such a heart in them, that they would fear me, and keep all my commandments always, that it might be well with them, and with their children forever!

Gå og gi dem beskjed: Vend tilbake til deres telt.

Go tell them, Return you to your tents.

Men du, stå her hos meg, så skal jeg tale til deg alle budene, forskriftene og lovene, som du skal lære dem, så de kan gjøre dem i det landet jeg gir dem til eie.

But as for you, stand you here by me, and I will speak to you all the commandment, and the statutes, and the ordinances, which you shall teach them, that they may do them in the land which I give them to possess it.

Dere skal nøye følge det Herren deres Gud har befalt dere: dere må ikke vike av til høyre eller til venstre.

You shall observe to do therefore as Yahweh your God has commanded you: you shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left.

Dere skal gå på alle de veiene Herren deres Gud har befalt dere, så dere kan leve, og det må gå dere vel, og dere kan få lange dager i det landet dere skal ta i eie.

You shall walk in all the way which Yahweh your God has commanded you, that you may live, and that it may be well with you, and that you may prolong your days in the land which you shall possess.
