Gud sa til Jakob: "Stå opp, dra opp til Betel og bo der. Lag et alter der til Gud, som åpenbarte seg for deg da du flyktet fra Esau, din bror."

God said to Jacob, "Arise, go up to Bethel, and live there. Make there an altar to God, who appeared to you when you fled from the face of Esau your brother."

Da sa Jakob til sin husstand og alle som var med ham: "Legg bort de fremmede gudene som er blant dere, rens dere selv og skift klær.

Then Jacob said to his household, and to all who were with him, "Put away the foreign gods that are among you, purify yourselves, change your garments.

La oss stå opp og dra til Betel. Der vil jeg lage et alter til Gud, som svarte meg på min nødens dag, og som har vært med meg på den veien jeg har vandret."

Let us arise, and go up to Bethel. I will make there an altar to God, who answered me in the day of my distress, and was with me in the way which I went."

De ga Jakob alle de fremmede gudene de hadde, og ringene som var i deres ører; og Jakob gravde dem ned under eika ved Sikem.

They gave to Jacob all the foreign gods which were in their hands, and the rings which were in their ears; and Jacob hid them under the oak which was by Shechem.

De reiste videre, og Guds redsel lå over byene rundt dem, og de forfulgte ikke Jakobs sønner.

They traveled: and a terror of God was on the cities that were round about them, and they didn't pursue the sons of Jacob.

Så kom Jakob til Luz i Kanaans land (det samme som Betel), han og alle folket som var med ham.

So Jacob came to Luz, which is in the land of Canaan (the same is Bethel), he and all the people who were with him.

Han bygde et alter der, og kalte stedet El Betel; fordi der viste Gud seg for ham da han flyktet fra sin bror.

He built an altar there, and called the place El Beth El; because there God was revealed to him, when he fled from the face of his brother.

Deborah, Rebekah's nurse, died, and she was buried below Bethel under the oak; and the name of it was called Allon Bacuth.

Gud viste seg for Jakob igjen, da han kom fra Paddan-Aram, og velsignet ham.

God appeared to Jacob again, when he came from Paddan Aram, and blessed him.

Gud sa til ham: "Ditt navn er Jakob. Du skal ikke lenger hete Jakob, men Israel skal være ditt navn." Så kalte han ham Israel.

God said to him, "Your name is Jacob. Your name shall not be Jacob any more, but your name will be Israel." He named him Israel.

Gud sa til ham: "Jeg er Gud den Allmektige. Vær fruktbar og bli mange. En nasjon og en mengde folk skal komme fra deg, og konger skal komme fra dine lender.

God said to him, "I am God Almighty. Be fruitful and multiply. A nation and a company of nations will be from you, and kings will come out of your loins.

Landet som jeg ga Abraham og Isak, vil jeg gi til deg, og til din ætt etter deg vil jeg gi landet."

The land which I gave to Abraham and Isaac, I will give it to you, and to your seed after you will I give the land."

Gud forlot ham der han hadde snakket med ham.

God went up from him in the place where he spoke with him.

Jakob reiste en minnestein på det stedet der han hadde snakket med ham, en steinsøyle. Han helte ut et drikkoffer på den, og helte også olje på den.

Jacob set up a pillar in the place where he spoke with him, a pillar of stone. He poured out a drink-offering on it, and poured oil on it.

Jakob kalte stedet der Gud hadde snakket med ham for Betel.

Jacob called the name of the place where God spoke with him "Bethel."

De dro videre fra Betel. De hadde ennå et stykke igjen til Efrat, da Rachel skulle føde, og hun hadde hard fødsel.

They traveled from Bethel. There was still some distance to come to Ephrath, and Rachel travailed. She had hard labor.

Det skjedde mens hun hadde hard fødsel, at jordmoren sa til henne: "Frykt ikke, for nå har du enda en sønn."

It happened that, when she was in hard labor, that the midwife said to her, "Don't be afraid, for now you will have another son."

Det skjedde da hennes sjel var på vei ut (for hun døde), at hun kalte ham Ben-Oni, men hans far kalte ham Benjamin.

It happened, as her soul was departing (for she died), that she named him Ben-oni,{"Ben-oni" means "son of my trouble."} but his father named him Benjamin.{"Benjamin" means "son of my right hand."}

Rachel døde, og hun ble begravet på veien til Efrat (det samme som Betlehem).

Rachel died, and was buried in the way to Ephrath (the same is Bethlehem).

Jakob reiste en minnestein på hennes grav. Den står som Rachels gravstein den dag i dag.

Jacob set up a pillar on her grave. The same is the Pillar of Rachel's grave to this day.

Israel dro videre, og slo opp sitt telt bortenfor Migdol-Eder.

Israel traveled, and spread his tent beyond the tower of Eder.

Mens Israel bodde i dette landet, skjedde det at Ruben gikk og lå hos Bilha, hans fars medhustru, og Israel hørte det. Jakobs sønner var tolv.

It happened, while Israel lived in that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah, his father's concubine, and Israel heard of it. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve.

Leahs sønner: Ruben (Jakobs førstefødte), Simeon, Levi, Juda, Issakar og Sebulon.

The sons of Leah: Reuben (Jacob's firstborn), Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun.

Rachels sønner: Josef og Benjamin.

The sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin.

Bilhas sønner (Rachels tjenestekvinne): Dan og Naftali.

The sons of Bilhah (Rachel's handmaid): Dan and Naphtali.

Zilpas sønner (Leahs tjenestekvinne): Gad og Asjer. Dette er Jakobs sønner, som ble født til ham i Paddan-Aram.

Isaks dager var hundre og åtti år.

The days of Isaac were one hundred eighty years.

Isak utåndet, og døde, og ble samlet til sitt folk, gammel og mett av dager. Esau og Jakob, hans sønner, begravde ham.

Isaac gave up the spirit, and died, and was gathered to his people, old and full of days. Esau and Jacob, his sons, buried him.
