Why do the nations rage, And the peoples plot a vain thing?

Jordens konger reiser seg, og fyrstene rådslår sammen mot Herren og hans salvede og sier,

The kings of the earth take a stand, And the rulers take counsel together, Against Yahweh, and against his anointed,{The word "anointed" is the same as the word for "Messiah" or "Christ"} saying,

«La oss sprenge deres lenker, og kaste deres bånd fra oss.»

"Let's break their bonds apart, And cast away their cords from us."

Han som troner i himmelen ler. Herren spotter dem.

He who sits in the heavens will laugh. The Lord will have them in derision.

Så taler han til dem i sin vrede, og skremmer dem i sin brennende harme:

Then he will speak to them in his anger, And terrify them in his wrath:

«Jeg har innsatt min konge på Sion, mitt hellige berg.»

"Yet I have set my king on my holy hill of Zion."

Jeg vil kunngjøre Herrens beslutning: Han sa til meg: «Du er min sønn. I dag har jeg født deg.

I will tell of the decree. Yahweh said to me, "You are my son. Today I have become your father.

Be meg, så gir jeg deg folkene som arv og hele jorden til eie.

Ask of me, and I will give the nations for your inheritance, The uttermost parts of the earth for your possession.

Du skal knuse dem med jernstav; slå dem i stykker som et leirkar.»

You shall break them with a rod of iron. You shall dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel."

Vær nå kloke, dere konger. La dere undervise, dere jordens dommere.

Now therefore be wise, you kings. Be instructed, you judges of the earth.

Tjen Herren med frykt og gled dere med beven.

Serve Yahweh with fear, And rejoice with trembling.

Kyss sønnen, for at han ikke skal bli vred og dere miste deres vei, for hans vrede kan snart tennes. Salige er alle som tar tilflukt hos ham.

Kiss the son, lest he be angry, and you perish in the way, For his wrath will soon be kindled. Blessed are all those who take refuge in him.
