It happened in the fourth year of king Darius that the word of Yahweh came to Zechariah in the fourth day of the ninth month, the month of Chislev.

Folket fra Betel sendte Sareser og Regem-Melek, sammen med deres menn, for å søke Herrens velvilje,

The people of Bethel sent Sharezer and Regem Melech, and their men, to entreat Yahweh's favor,

og for å tale til prestene i Herrens hærskars hus og til profetene, og si: "Skal jeg gråte i den femte måneden og faste, slik jeg har gjort i så mange år?"

and to speak to the priests of the house of Yahweh of Hosts, and to the prophets, saying, "Should I weep in the fifth month, separating myself, as I have done these so many years?"

Så kom Herrens hærskars ord til meg, og sa:

Then the word of Yahweh of Hosts came to me, saying,

"Si til hele folket i landet og til prestene: 'Når dere fastet og sørget i den femte og i den sjuende måneden i disse sytti år, var det virkelig for meg at dere fastet?

"Speak to all the people of the land, and to the priests, saying, 'When you fasted and mourned in the fifth and in the seventh month for these seventy years, did you at all fast to me, really to me?

Og når dere spiser og drikker, er det ikke for dere selv dere spiser og drikker?

When you eat, and when you drink, don't you eat for yourselves, and drink for yourselves?

Er det ikke disse ordene som Herren forkynte gjennom de tidligere profetene, da Jerusalem var bebodd og i velstand, sammen med byene rundt den, og da Sørlandet og lavlandet var bebodd?'"

Aren't these the words which Yahweh proclaimed by the former prophets, when Jerusalem was inhabited and in prosperity, and its cities around her, and the South and the lowland were inhabited?'"

Herrens ord kom til Sakarja, og sa:

The word of Yahweh came to Zechariah, saying,

"Så sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud: 'Før sann rett, og vis godhet og barmhjertighet, hver eneste mann mot sin bror.

"Thus has Yahweh of Hosts spoken, saying, 'Execute true judgment, and show kindness and compassion every man to his brother.

Undertrykk ikke enken, den farløse, den fremmede eller den fattige, og la ingen av dere pønske ut ondt mot sin bror i sitt hjerte.'

Don't oppress the widow, nor the fatherless, the foreigner, nor the poor; and let none of you devise evil against his brother in your heart.'

Men de nektet å lytte, og vendte ryggen til, og stoppet ørene for ikke å høre.

But they refused to listen, and turned their backs, and stopped their ears, that they might not hear.

Ja, de gjorde sine hjerter harde som flint, for ikke å høre loven og ordene som Herrens hærskare hadde sendt ved sin Ånd gjennom de tidligere profetene. Derfor kom stor vrede fra Herrens hærskare.

Yes, they made their hearts as hard as flint, lest they might hear the law, and the words which Yahweh of Hosts had sent by his Spirit by the former prophets. Therefore great wrath came from Yahweh of Hosts.

Det har hendt at, når han kalte, og de nektet å lytte, så skal de rope, og jeg vil ikke høre," sa Herrens hærskare;

It has come to pass that, as he called, and they refused to listen, so they will call, and I will not listen," said Yahweh of Hosts;

"men jeg vil spre dem med en stormvind blant alle de folkeslag som de ikke har kjent. Slik ble landet øde etter dem, så ingen kunne passere gjennom eller vende tilbake, for de gjorde det herlige landet øde."

"but I will scatter them with a whirlwind among all the nations which they have not known. Thus the land was desolate after them, so that no man passed through nor returned: for they made the pleasant land desolate."
