Verse 1

In the eighteenth year of King Jeroboam son of Nebat, Abijam became king over Judah.

Verse 2

He reigned for three years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Maacah, the daughter of Abishalom.

Verse 3

He committed all the sins his father had done before him, and his heart was not fully devoted to the LORD his God, as the heart of David his forefather had been.

Verse 4

Nevertheless, for the sake of David, the LORD his God gave him a lamp in Jerusalem by raising up a son to succeed him and by establishing Jerusalem.

Verse 5

For David had done what was right in the eyes of the LORD and had not turned aside from anything He commanded him all the days of his life, except in the matter of Uriah the Hittite.

Verse 6

There was war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam all the days of his life.

Verse 7

The rest of the acts of Abijam and all that he did, are they not written in the Book of the Annals of the Kings of Judah? There was also war between Abijam and Jeroboam.

Verse 8

Abijam rested with his ancestors and was buried in the City of David, and his son Asa became king in his place.

Verse 9

In the twentieth year of Jeroboam king of Israel, Asa became king of Judah.

Verse 10

He reigned for forty-one years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Maacah, the daughter of Abishalom.

Verse 11

Asa did what was right in the sight of the LORD, as his forefather David had done.

Verse 12

He expelled the male shrine prostitutes from the land and removed all the idols that his fathers had made.

Verse 13

He also removed his mother Maacah from her position as queen mother because she had made a repulsive image for Asherah. Asa cut down her idol and burned it in the Kidron Valley.

Verse 14

The high places were not removed, yet Asa’s heart was fully devoted to the LORD all his days.

Verse 15

He brought into the house of the LORD the sacred things his father had dedicated, along with his own sacred gifts of silver, gold, and utensils.

Verse 16

There was war between Asa and Baasha king of Israel throughout their reigns.

Verse 17

Baasha king of Israel went up against Judah and fortified Ramah to prevent anyone from leaving or entering the territory of Asa king of Judah.

Verse 18

Then Asa took all the silver and gold left in the treasuries of the house of the LORD and the royal palace and placed them into the hands of his servants. And King Asa sent them to Ben-Hadad son of Tabrimmon, the son of Hezion, the king of Aram, who lived in Damascus, with this message:

Verse 19

Let there be a treaty between me and you, as there was between my father and your father. See, I am sending you a gift of silver and gold. Now go, break your treaty with Baasha king of Israel so that he will withdraw from me.

Verse 20

Ben-Hadad listened to King Asa and sent the commanders of his forces against the cities of Israel, conquering Ijon, Dan, Abel Beth Maacah, and all Kinneroth, as well as all the land of Naphtali.

Verse 21

When Baasha heard about it, he stopped building Ramah and moved to Tirzah.

Verse 22

Then King Asa issued a proclamation to all Judah with no exceptions, and they carried away the stones and timber Baasha had used to fortify Ramah. With these materials King Asa built up Geba in Benjamin and Mizpah.

Verse 23

Now the rest of the acts of Asa, all his might, and everything he did, as well as the cities he built, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah? But in his old age he suffered from a disease in his feet.

Verse 24

Then Asa rested with his ancestors and was buried with them in the city of his father David. And his son Jehoshaphat reigned in his place.

Verse 25

Nadab, Jeroboams sønn, ble konge over Israel i det andre året til Asa, Judas konge, og han regjerte over Israel i to år.

Nadab son of Jeroboam became king over Israel in the second year of Asa king of Judah, and he reigned over Israel for two years.

Verse 26

He did evil in the sight of the LORD and followed in the ways of his father, committing the same sin his father had caused Israel to commit.

Verse 27

Baasha son of Ahijah, from the tribe of Issachar, conspired against Nadab and struck him down at Gibbethon, a Philistine town, while Nadab and all Israel were laying siege to it.

Verse 28

Baasha killed Nadab in the third year of Asa king of Judah and reigned in his place.

Verse 29

As soon as Baasha became king, he killed the entire house of Jeroboam. He did not leave a single soul alive, utterly destroying them, in accordance with the word of the LORD spoken through His servant Ahijah the Shilonite.

Verse 30

This happened because of the sins Jeroboam had committed and caused Israel to commit, provoking the LORD, the God of Israel, to anger.

Verse 31

As for the rest of the acts of Nadab, and all he did, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel?

Verse 32

There was war between Asa and Baasha king of Israel throughout their reigns.

Verse 33

In the third year of Asa king of Judah, Baasha son of Ahijah became king over all Israel in Tirzah and reigned for twenty-four years.

Verse 34

He did what was evil in the sight of the LORD and followed in the way of Jeroboam and the sin he had caused Israel to commit.
