Nahash the Ammonite went up and besieged Jabesh-Gilead. All the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, "Make a treaty with us, and we will serve you."

Nahash ammonitten svarte dem: 'På denne betingelsen vil jeg gjøre en avtale med dere: at jeg stikker ut det høyre øyet til hver av dere, og således bringer skam over hele Israel.'

Nahash the Ammonite answered them, "On this condition I will make a treaty with you: by gouging out everyone's right eye, bringing disgrace on all Israel."

Eldste i Jabesh sa til ham: 'Gi oss en ukes frist, så vi kan sende budbringere rundt i hele Israel. Om ingen kommer for å redde oss, skal vi komme ut til deg.'

The elders of Jabesh said to him, "Give us seven days so we can send messengers throughout Israel. If no one comes to save us, we will surrender to you."

Budbringerne kom til Sauls hjem i Gibea og fortalte folket det. Da løftet alle folket sin røst og gråt.

When the messengers came to Gibeah of Saul and reported these matters to the people, they all wept loudly.

Just then, Saul was coming in from the field, following the oxen. He asked, "What is wrong with the people? Why are they all crying?" They told him what the men of Jabesh had said.

The Spirit of God came powerfully upon Saul as he heard these words, and his anger burned greatly.

He took a pair of oxen, cut them into pieces, and sent them throughout Israel by messengers, saying, "This is what will be done to the oxen of anyone who does not follow Saul and Samuel." The fear of the LORD fell on the people, and they came out together as one.

Han mønstret dem i Bezek, og Israels menn var tre hundre tusen, og Judas menn tretti tusen.

When Saul mustered them at Bezek, there were three hundred thousand Israelites and thirty thousand men of Judah.

De sa til budbringerne som var kommet: 'Slik skal dere si til mennene i Jabesh i Gilead:

They said to the messengers who had come, "Say to the men of Jabesh-Gilead: 'Tomorrow, by the time the sun is hot, you will be delivered.'" When the messengers went and reported this to the men of Jabesh, they were overjoyed.

Da sa mennene i Jabesh: 'I morgen skal vi komme ut til dere, og dere kan gjøre med oss alt som synes godt i deres øyne.'

The men of Jabesh then said, "Tomorrow we will surrender to you, and you can do to us whatever seems good to you."

Neste dag delte Saul folket i tre avdelinger. De trengte inn i leiren i morgenvaktens tid og slo ammonittene til dagens hete. De som overlevde, ble spredt, så ikke to av dem var sammen.

The next day, Saul divided the people into three divisions. They entered the camp during the morning watch and struck down the Ammonites until the heat of the day. Those who survived were scattered, so that no two of them were left together.

Da sa folket til Samuel: 'Hvem var det som sa: Skal Saul herske over oss? Gi oss disse mennene, så vi kan drepe dem!'

Then the people said to Samuel, "Who was it that said, 'Shall Saul reign over us?' Bring those men to us, and we will put them to death."

Men Saul sa: 'Ingen skal drepes i dag, for i dag har Herren gitt frelse i Israel.'

But Saul said, "No one will be put to death today, for this is the day the LORD has delivered Israel."

Så sa Samuel til folket: 'Kom, la oss gå til Gilgal og fornye kongedømmet der.'

Then Samuel said to the people, "Come, let us go to Gilgal and renew the kingship there."

Og hele folket gikk til Gilgal, og der gjorde de Saul til konge for Herrens ansikt i Gilgal. De ofret fredsofre for Herren, og Saul og hele Israels folk frydet seg stort der.

So all the people went to Gilgal, and there they made Saul king in the presence of the LORD. They sacrificed peace offerings before the LORD, and Saul and all the men of Israel celebrated with great joy.
