Det var en mann fra Benjamin, som het Kish, sønn av Abiel, sønn av Zeror, sønn av Bekorat, sønn av Afiah, en benjaminitisk mann, en mektig kriger.

There was a man from the tribe of Benjamin named Kish, the son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Becorath, the son of Aphiah, from the tribe of Benjamin, a man of great standing.

Han hadde en sønn som het Saul, en ung mann, god og vakker. Ingen blant Israels folk var bedre enn ham. Han var et hode høyere enn alle andre.

He had a son named Saul, a handsome young man. There was no one among the Israelites as handsome as he was; he stood a head taller than anyone else.

Eselet til Kish, Sauls far, kom bort. Kish sa da til Saul, sin sønn: 'Ta med deg en av tjenerne, stå opp og let etter eslene.'

Now the donkeys belonging to Saul’s father Kish were lost. Kish said to Saul, "Take one of the servants with you and go look for the donkeys."

Så gikk de gjennom Efraims fjelland og gjennom landet Shalisha, men de fant dem ikke. De gikk også gjennom Shaalimlandet, men de var ikke der heller. Deretter gikk de gjennom Benjamins land, men de fant dem ikke.

So they went through the hill country of Ephraim and the land of Shalisha, but they did not find them. Then they went through the land of Shaalim, but the donkeys were not there. They passed through the territory of Benjamin, but they still did not find them.

Da de kom til landet Zuf, sa Saul til sin tjener som var med ham: 'Kom, la oss dra tilbake, for min far vil ikke lenger være bekymret for eslene, men bli bekymret for oss.'

When they reached the region of Zuph, Saul said to the servant with him, "Come, let’s go back, or else my father will stop worrying about the donkeys and start worrying about us."

Men tjeneren sa til ham: 'Det er en Guds mann i denne byen, en æresverdig mann, alt han sier skjer. La oss gå dit, kanskje han kan fortelle oss hvilken vei vi bør ta.'

But the servant replied, "Look, there is a man of God in this town, and he is highly respected. Everything he says comes true. Let’s go there now; perhaps he can tell us the way to go."

Saul sa til sin tjener: 'Om vi går, hva skal vi ta med til mannen? Brødet i våre sekker er borte, og det er ingen gave å bringe Guds mannen. Hva har vi?'

Saul said to his servant, "If we go, what can we give the man? The bread in our bags is gone, and we have no gift to bring to the man of God. What do we have?"

Tjeneren svarte Saul igjen: 'Se, jeg har en fjerdedels sekel sølv, jeg vil gi det til Guds mannen, så vil han fortelle oss veien vår.'

The servant answered Saul again, "Look, I have a quarter of a shekel of silver. I will give it to the man of God so that he will tell us what way to go."

(Formerly in Israel, when people went to inquire of God, they would say, "Come, let us go to the seer," because the prophet of today used to be called a seer.)

Saul said to his servant, "Good idea. Let’s go." So they set out for the town where the man of God was.

Da de gikk oppover til byen, traff de noen unge kvinner som gikk ut for å hente vann, og de spurte dem: 'Er seeren her?'

As they were climbing the hill to the town, they met young women coming out to draw water, and they asked them, "Is the seer here?"

De svarte dem: 'Ja, han er der foran dere, skynd dere nå, for i dag har han kommet til byen fordi folket har en ofring på høyden i dag.'

They answered, "Yes, he is ahead of you. Hurry now; he has just come to the town today, for the people are offering a sacrifice at the high place."

Så snart dere kommer inn i byen, finner dere ham før han går opp til høyden for å spise. Folket vil ikke spise før han kommer, for han må velsigne ofringen; etterpå vil de innbudte spise. Gå nå, for dere vil finne ham med det samme.'

As soon as you enter the city, you will find him before he goes up to the high place to eat. The people will not eat until he arrives because he must bless the sacrifice first. After that, those who have been invited can eat. Go now, for you will find him at this time.

Så gikk de opp til byen. Idet de kom inn i byen, kom Samuel ut mot dem for å gå opp til høyden.

So they went up to the city, and as they were entering it, Samuel was coming out toward them on his way up to the high place.

Herren hadde dagen før Saul kom, åpenbart dette til Samuel:

Now the LORD had revealed to Samuel the day before Saul came,

'I morgen, ved denne tid, vil jeg sende en mann fra Benjamins land til deg. Du skal salve ham til fyrste over mitt folk Israel, så han kan frelse mitt folk fra filistrenes hånd. For jeg har sett mitt folk, og deres rop har nådd meg.'

"About this time tomorrow, I will send you a man from the land of Benjamin. You shall anoint him as ruler over my people Israel. He will deliver my people from the hand of the Philistines, for I have seen my people and their cry has reached me."

Da Samuel så Saul, sa Herren til ham: 'Se, det er mannen jeg talte til deg om. Han skal styre mitt folk.'

When Samuel saw Saul, the LORD said to him, "Here is the man I told you about; he will govern my people."

Saul nærmet seg Samuel midt i byporten og sa: 'Si meg, hvor er seerens hus?'

Saul approached Samuel at the city gate and asked, "Please tell me where the seer's house is."

Samuel svarte Saul: 'Jeg er seeren. Gå opp foran meg til høyden, for dere skal spise med meg i dag, og i morgen vil jeg la deg gå og fortelle deg alt som ligger på ditt hjerte.'

Samuel answered, "I am the seer. Go up ahead of me to the high place, for you will eat with me today. In the morning, I will send you on your way and tell you all that is on your heart.

Og angående de eslene som var mistet for deg for tre dager siden, bry deg ikke om dem, for de er funnet. For hvem tilhører alt som er verdifullt i Israel? Tilhører det ikke deg og hele din fars hus?'

As for the donkeys you lost three days ago, do not worry about them; they have been found. And to whom is all the desire of Israel directed? Is it not to you and your whole family?"

Saul svarte: 'Er jeg ikke en benjaminit, fra en av de minste stammene i Israel, og er ikke min slekt den minste av alle slektsgruppene i Benjamin? Hvorfor taler du slik til meg?'

Saul answered, "Am I not a Benjamite, from the smallest of the tribes of Israel? And is not my family the least of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin? Why do you speak to me this way?"

Samuel tok Saul og hans tjener og førte dem inn i spisesalen og ga dem hedersplassen blant de inviterte, som var omtrent tretti mann.

Then Samuel took Saul and his servant, brought them into the hall, and seated them at the head of those who had been invited—about thirty in number.

Samuel said to the cook, "Bring the portion of meat I gave you, the one I told you to set aside."

Kokken tok låret med det som var på, og satte det frem for Saul. Samuel sa: 'Se her, det som er satt til side. Spis! For det er blitt holdt for deg til denne anledningen da jeg sa at jeg hadde innbudt folket.' Så spiste Saul med Samuel den dagen.

So the cook took up the thigh with what was on it and placed it before Saul. Samuel said, "Here is what was kept for you. Eat it, because it was reserved for you for this appointed occasion when I said, 'I have invited the people.'" And Saul ate with Samuel that day.

Etter måltidet gikk de ned fra høyden til byen, og Samuel samtalte med Saul oppe på taket.

After they came down from the high place to the town, Samuel spoke with Saul on the roof.

De sto opp tidlig, og ved daggry kalte Samuel på Saul oppe på taket og sa: 'Stå opp, så vil jeg følge deg på din vei.' Saul sto opp, og de gikk begge ut, han og Samuel.

They got up early, and at the break of dawn, Samuel called to Saul on the roof, saying, "Get up, and I will send you on your way." So Saul got up, and both he and Samuel went outside together.

Mens de gikk ned mot utkanten av byen, sa Samuel til Saul: 'Si til tjeneren din at han skal gå litt foran oss.' Tjeneren gikk videre, men du, stå stille her, så jeg kan la deg høre Guds ord.'

As they were going down to the outskirts of the town, Samuel said to Saul, "Tell the servant to go on ahead of us"—and the servant went on—"but you stay here for a moment, and I will give you a message from God."
