Jehoshaphat had great wealth and honor, and he allied himself by marriage with Ahab.

Some years later, he went down to visit Ahab in Samaria. Ahab slaughtered an abundance of sheep and cattle for him and the people who were with him and persuaded him to go up to Ramoth Gilead.

Akab, Israels konge, sa til Josjafat, Judas konge: «Vil du dra med meg til Ramot i Gilead?» Josjafat svarte: «Jeg er som du er, mitt folk er som ditt folk; vi skal være med deg i kampen.»

Ahab king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat king of Judah, 'Will you go with me to Ramoth Gilead?' Jehoshaphat replied, 'I am as you are, and my people as your people; we will join you in the battle.'

Josjafat sa videre til Israels konge: «Søk, vær så snill, Herrens ord denne dagen.»

But Jehoshaphat also said to the king of Israel, 'Please, first seek the word of the LORD today.'

Israels konge samlet da profetene, fire hundre mann, og sa til dem: «Skal vi dra i krig mot Ramot i Gilead, eller skal jeg la være?» De svarte: «Dra opp, for Gud skal gi byen i kongens hånd.»

So the king of Israel gathered the prophets, four hundred men, and asked them, 'Shall we go to war against Ramoth Gilead, or should I refrain?' They answered, 'Go up, for God will give it into the hand of the king.'

Men Josjafat sa: «Er det ikke her en annen Herrens profet som vi også kan spørre til råds?»

But Jehoshaphat asked, 'Is there not still a prophet of the LORD here whom we can inquire of?'

Israels konge svarte Josjafat: «Det er enda én mann, Mika, sønn av Jimla, som vi kan spørre Herren gjennom. Men jeg hater ham, for han profeterer aldri noe godt om meg, bare ondt.» Josjafat sa: «Kongen må ikke si slikt.»

The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, 'There is still one man we can inquire of the LORD through, but I hate him because he never prophesies anything good about me, only bad. His name is Micaiah son of Imlah.' Jehoshaphat said, 'The king should not say such things.'

Så kalte Israels konge på en av hoffmennene sine og sa: «Skynd deg og hent Mika, sønn av Jimla.»

So the king of Israel called one of his officials and said, 'Quickly bring Micaiah son of Imlah.'

Israels konge og Josjafat, Judas konge, satt på sine tronstoler, kledd i sine kongelige kapper, på treskeplassen ved inngangen til Samarias port. Alle profetene profeterte foran dem.

The king of Israel and Jehoshaphat king of Judah, dressed in their royal robes, were sitting on their thrones at the threshing floor by the entrance of the gate of Samaria, and all the prophets were prophesying before them.

Sakarja, sønn av Kena'ana, laget seg jernhorn og sa: «Så sier Herren: Med disse skal du stange arameerne til de er utslettet.»

Zedekiah son of Chenaanah had made iron horns and declared, 'This is what the LORD says: With these you will gore the Arameans until they are destroyed.'

All the other prophets were prophesying the same, saying, 'Go up to Ramoth Gilead and be victorious, for the LORD will give it into the king's hand.'

The messenger who had gone to summon Micaiah said to him, 'Look, the other prophets are all in agreement, predicting success for the king. Let your word be like theirs and speak favorably.'

But Micaiah said, 'As surely as the LORD lives, I will say whatever my God says to me.'

When Micaiah arrived, the king asked him, 'Micaiah, shall we go to war against Ramoth Gilead, or should I refrain?' 'Attack and be victorious,' he answered, 'for they will be given into your hand.'

Men kongen sa til ham: «Hvor mange ganger skal jeg få deg til å sverge at du ikke sier meg annet enn sannheten i Herrens navn?»

The king said to him, 'How many times must I make you swear to tell me nothing but the truth in the name of the LORD?'

Da sa Mika: «Jeg så hele Israel spredt utover fjellene som sauer uten gjeter. Og Herren sa: ‘Disse har ingen herre. La alle vende tilbake til sitt hus i fred.’»

Then Micaiah said, 'I saw all Israel scattered on the hills like sheep without a shepherd, and the LORD said, "These people have no master; let each one go home in peace."'

Israels konge sa til Josjafat: «Sa jeg ikke til deg at han aldri profeterer noe godt om meg, bare ondt?»

The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, 'Didn't I tell you that he never prophesies anything good about me, but only bad?'

Mika sa: «Hør derfor Herrens ord: Jeg så Herren sitte på sin trone, og hele himmelens hær sto ved hans høyre og venstre side.

Micaiah continued, 'Therefore hear the word of the LORD: I saw the LORD sitting on his throne, with all the host of heaven standing on his right and on his left.'

Herren sa: ‘Hvem vil lokke Akab, Israels konge, så han drar opp og faller ved Ramot i Gilead?’ En sa slik, en annen slik.

And the LORD said, 'Who will entice Ahab king of Israel into attacking Ramoth Gilead and going to his death there?' One suggested this, and another that.

Da trådte en ånd fram, stilte seg foran Herren og sa: ‘Jeg skal lokke ham.’ Herren spurte ham: ‘Hvordan?’

Finally, a spirit came forward, stood before the LORD, and said, 'I will entice him.' 'By what means?' the LORD asked.

Han svarte: ‘Jeg skal gå ut og bli en løgnens ånd i munnen på alle hans profeter.’ Herren sa: ‘Du skal lokke ham, og du skal også klare det. Gå ut og gjør det.’

He said, 'I will go and be a lying spirit in the mouths of all his prophets.' The LORD said, 'You will succeed in enticing him. Go and do it.'

Så har nå Herren lagt en løgnens ånd i munnen på alle disse profetene dine. Herren har sagt ulykke om deg.»

So now the LORD has put a lying spirit in the mouths of these prophets of yours. The LORD has decreed disaster for you.

Da kom Sidkia, sønn av Kena’ana, bort, slo Mika på kinnet og sa: «Hvordan? Har Herrens Ånd forlatt meg for å tale til deg?»

Then Zedekiah son of Kenaanah went up and slapped Micaiah in the face. 'Which way did the Spirit of the LORD go when he left me to speak to you?' he asked.

Mika svarte: «Du skal få se det den dagen du flykter fra rom til rom for å gjemme deg.»

Micaiah replied, 'You will find out on the day you go to hide in an inner room.'

Israels konge sa: «Ta Mika og før ham tilbake til Amon, byens høvding, og til Joasj, kongens sønn.

The king of Israel then ordered, 'Take Micaiah and send him back to Amon, the ruler of the city, and to Joash, the king's son.'

And say, "This is what the king says: Put this man in prison and give him nothing but bread and water until I return safely."

Mika sa: «Hvis du virkelig kommer tilbake i fred, da har Herren ikke talt gjennom meg.» Så sa han: «Hør, alle folk!»

Micaiah declared, 'If you ever return safely, the LORD has not spoken through me.' Then he added, 'Mark my words, all you people!'

Israels konge og Josjafat, Judas konge, dro opp til Ramot i Gilead.

So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat king of Judah went up to Ramoth Gilead.

Israels konge sa til Josjafat: «Jeg vil kle meg ut og gå i kamp, men du kan ta på deg dine kongelige klær.» Så kledde Israels konge seg ut, og de dro til kamp.

The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, 'I will disguise myself and enter the battle, but you wear your royal robes.' So the king of Israel disguised himself and went into the battle.

Kongen i Aram bød vognførerne: «Strid ikke mot noen, verken små eller store, men bare mot Israels konge.»

Now the king of Aram had commanded his chariot commanders, 'Do not fight with anyone, small or great, except the king of Israel.'

Da vognførerne så Josjafat, sa de: «Det må være Israels konge!» Så vendte de seg mot ham for å kjempe. Men Josjafat ropte ut, og Herren hjalp ham; Gud vendte dem bort fra ham.

When the chariot commanders saw Jehoshaphat, they thought, 'This is the king of Israel!' So they turned to attack him. But Jehoshaphat cried out, and the LORD helped him; God diverted them away from him.

Da vognførerne så at det ikke var Israels konge, vendte de seg fra ham.

When the chariot commanders realized he was not the king of Israel, they turned away from pursuing him.

Men en mann spente buen og skjøt en pil tilfeldig. Den traff Israels konge mellom brynjen og harnisken. Kongen sa til vognføreren: «Vend om og før meg ut av hæren, for jeg er såret.»

But a man drew his bow at random and struck the king of Israel between the joints of his armor. The king said to his chariot driver, 'Turn around and get me out of the battle, for I am wounded.'

Kampen raste hele dagen, og Israels konge holdt seg oppreist i vognen vendt mot arameerne til kvelden. Men ved solnedgang døde han.

The battle raged throughout the day, and the king of Israel propped himself up in his chariot facing the Arameans until evening. Then, at sunset, he died.
