When the LORD was about to take Elijah up to heaven in a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were on their way from Gilgal.

Elia sa til Elisja: «Bli værende her, for Herren har sendt meg til Betel.» Men Elisja svarte: «Så sant Herren lever og så sant du selv lever, jeg vil ikke forlate deg.» Så de gikk ned til Betel sammen.

Elijah said to Elisha, "Please stay here, for the LORD has sent me to Bethel." But Elisha replied, "As the LORD lives and as you live, I will not leave you." So they went to Bethel.

Profetdisiplene i Betel kom ut til Elisja og sa: «Vet du at i dag vil Herren ta din mester fra deg?» Han svarte: «Ja, jeg vet det; vær stille.»

The sons of the prophets who were in Bethel came out to Elisha and said to him, "Do you know that today the LORD is going to take your master away from you?" He replied, "Yes, I know it. Be quiet."

Then Elijah said to him, "Please stay here, for the LORD has sent me to Jericho." But Elisha replied, "As the LORD lives and as you live, I will not leave you." So they went to Jericho.

The sons of the prophets who were in Jericho approached Elisha and said to him, "Do you know that today the LORD is going to take your master away from you?" He answered, "Yes, I know it. Be quiet."

Femti av profetdisiplene gikk og sto på avstand, mens de to sto ved Jordan.

Fifty men of the sons of the prophets went and stood at a distance, while the two of them stood by the Jordan.

Da tok Elia kappen sin, rullet den sammen og slo på vannet; det delte seg i to, og de gikk tørrskodd over.

Elijah took his cloak, rolled it up, and struck the water with it. The water divided to the right and to the left, and the two of them crossed over on dry ground.

Da de hadde kommet over, sa Elia til Elisja: «Be om hva jeg skal gjøre for deg før jeg blir tatt bort fra deg.» Elisja svarte: «La meg få en dobbel del av din ånd!»

After they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, "Tell me, what can I do for you before I am taken from you?" Elisha replied, "Let me inherit a double portion of your spirit."

Elia sa: «Du har bedt om noe vanskelig. Hvis du ser meg når jeg blir tatt fra deg, skal det bli slik for deg. Hvis ikke, så blir det ikke slik.»

Elijah said, "You have asked for a difficult thing. If you see me when I am taken from you, it will be yours—otherwise, it will not."

Mens de gikk og snakket sammen, kom det plutselig en ildvogn og ildhester og skilte de to ad, og Elia fór opp til himmelen i stormen.

As they were walking along and talking together, suddenly a chariot of fire and horses of fire appeared and separated the two of them, and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind.

Elisja så det og ropte: «Min far, min far, Israels vogner og ryttere!» Og han så ham ikke mer. Han tok sine klær og rev dem i to stykker.

Elisha saw this and cried out, 'My father, my father! The chariots and horsemen of Israel!' And he saw him no more. Then he took hold of his own clothes and tore them into two pieces.

Han plukket opp Elias kappe som hadde falt av ham, og vendte tilbake og sto ved bredden av Jordan.

Elisha picked up Elijah's cloak that had fallen from him and went back and stood on the bank of the Jordan.

Han tok Elias kappe som hadde falt av ham, og slo på vannet med den og sa: «Hvor er Herren, Elias Gud?» Da han slo på vannet, delte det seg i to og Elisja gikk over.

He took the cloak that had fallen from Elijah and struck the water with it. 'Where now is the LORD, the God of Elijah?' he asked. When he struck the water, it divided to the right and to the left, and he crossed over.

Profetdisiplene fra Jeriko så det på avstand og sa: «Elias ånd hviler over Elisja.» Så kom de for å møte ham og bøyde seg til jorden for ham.

The company of the prophets from Jericho saw him from a distance and said, 'The spirit of Elijah is resting on Elisha.' And they went to meet him and bowed to the ground before him.

De sa til ham: «Se, det er femti sterke menn hos dine tjenere. La dem gå og søke etter din mester. Kanskje Herrens Ånd har løftet ham opp og kastet ham på et av fjellene eller i en av dalene.» Men han sa: «Dere skal ikke sende dem.»

They said to him, 'Look, we have fifty able men among your servants. Let them go and search for your master. Perhaps the Spirit of the LORD has picked him up and set him down on some mountain or in some valley.' But Elisha replied, 'Do not send them.'

De ba ham innstendig til han skammet seg og sa: «Send dem!» Så de sendte femti mann, og de lette i tre dager uten å finne ham.

But they persisted until he was too ashamed to refuse. So he said, 'Send them.' And they sent fifty men, who searched for three days but did not find him.

Da de vendte tilbake til ham mens han var i Jeriko, sa han til dem: «Sa jeg ikke til dere at dere ikke skulle gå?»

When they returned to Elisha, who was staying in Jericho, he said to them, 'Didn't I tell you not to go?'

Mennene i byen sa til Elisja: «Se, herre, byen er god å bo i, som du ser, men vannet er dårlig og jorden gjør folk ufruktbare.»

The people of the city said to Elisha, 'Look, our lord, this town is well situated, as you can see, but the water is bad, and the land is unproductive.'

Og han sa: «Hent meg en ny skål og legg salt i den.» Og de hentet den til ham.

Elisha said, 'Bring me a new bowl and put salt in it.' So they brought it to him.

Så gikk han ut til vannkilden, kastet salt i den og sa: «Så sier Herren: Jeg har gjort dette vannet friskt. Aldri igjen skal det forårsake død eller ufruktbarhet.»

Then he went out to the spring and threw the salt into it, saying, 'This is what the LORD says: I have healed this water. Never again will it cause death or make the land unproductive.'

Og vannet ble friskt og har vært det til denne dag, i samsvar med det ord Elisja talte.

And the water has remained pure to this day, according to the word Elisha had spoken.

Derfra gikk han opp til Betel. Mens han gikk opp langs veien, kom noen små gutter ut fra byen og hånet ham. De sa: «Kom opp her, din skallede!»

From there Elisha went up to Bethel. As he was walking along the road, some boys came out of the town and mocked him. 'Get out of here, baldy!' they said. 'Get out of here, baldy!'

Han vendte seg om, så på dem og forbannet dem i Herrens navn. Da kom det to bjørner ut av skogen og rev i hjel førtito av barna.

He turned around, saw them, and cursed them in the name of the LORD. Then two bears came out of the forest and mauled forty-two of the boys.

Derfra dro han til Karmelfjellet, og deretter vendte han tilbake til Samaria.

From there, he went on to Mount Carmel, and from there he returned to Samaria.
