Naaman, the commander of the army of the king of Aram, was a great man in his master's sight and highly regarded, because through him the Lord had given victory to Aram. He was a valiant warrior, but he had leprosy.

Arameerne hadde dratt ut på plyndringstokt og tatt til fange en ung jente fra Israels land, og hun ble tjenestepike for Naamans kone.

One day, Aram's raiding parties went out and captured a young girl from the land of Israel, and she became a servant to Naaman's wife.

Hun sa til sin frue: Om bare min herre var hos profeten som er i Samaria! Da ville han fjerne spedalskheten hans.

She said to her mistress, 'If only my master would go to see the prophet in Samaria! He would cure him of his leprosy.'

Naaman gikk og fortalte sin herre dette: Slik og slik har den unge jenta fra Israels land sagt.

Naaman went and told his master, saying, 'This is what the girl from the land of Israel said.'

Kongen av Aram sa: Dra av sted! Jeg skal sende et brev til kongen av Israel. Så dro han og tok med seg ti talenter sølv, seks tusen sikler gull og ti skifter klær.

The king of Aram said, 'Go, and I will send a letter to the king of Israel.' So Naaman left, taking with him ten talents of silver, six thousand shekels of gold, and ten sets of clothes.

Han leverte brevet til kongen av Israel, hvor det sto: Se, sammen med dette brevet har jeg sendt min tjener Naaman til deg, så du kan helbrede ham fra hans spedalskhet.

He brought the letter to the king of Israel, which read: 'Now, when this letter reaches you, know that I have sent you my servant Naaman, so that you may cure him of his leprosy.'

Da kongen av Israel hadde lest brevet, rev han klærne sine og sa: Er jeg Gud, som kan gi død og liv, siden denne mannen sender noen til meg for å helbrede en mann fra spedalskhet? Se hvordan han søker en anledning mot meg!

When the king of Israel read the letter, he tore his clothes and said, 'Am I God, able to kill and bring to life, that this man sends someone to me to cure him of his leprosy? See for yourselves that he is seeking a quarrel with me!'

Da Elisja, Guds mann, hørte at kongen av Israel hadde revet klærne sine, sendte han bud til kongen og sa: Hvorfor har du revet klærne dine? La ham komme til meg, så han kan få vite at det er en profet i Israel.

When Elisha, the man of God, heard that the king of Israel had torn his clothes, he sent the king this message: 'Why have you torn your clothes? Let Naaman come to me, and he will know that there is a prophet in Israel.'

Så kom Naaman med sine hester og vogner og sto ved inngangen til Elisjas hus.

So Naaman went with his horses and chariots and stopped at the door of Elisha’s house.

Elisja sendte en budbærer ut til ham og sa: Gå og vask deg sju ganger i Jordan, så skal kroppen din bli gjenopprettet til deg, og du skal bli ren.

Elisha sent a messenger to him, saying, 'Go, wash yourself seven times in the Jordan, and your flesh will be restored, and you will be cleansed.'

Men Naaman ble sint og dro sin vei. Han sa: Jeg tenkte at han i det minste ville komme ut og møte meg og stå og påkalle Herrens navn, hans Gud, vifte med hånden over stedet og ta bort spedalskheten.

But Naaman became angry and left, saying, 'I thought he would surely come out to me, stand, call on the name of the LORD his God, wave his hand over the spot, and cure the leprosy.'

Er ikke elvene i Damaskus, Abana og Parpar, bedre enn alle vannene i Israel? Kan jeg ikke vaske meg i dem og bli ren? Så snudde han og dro bort i raseri.

'Are not the Abana and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? Could I not wash in them and be cleansed?' So he turned and went away in a rage.

Men tjenerne hans kom fram, talte til ham og sa: Min far, hvis profeten hadde bedt deg gjøre noe stort, ville du ikke ha gjort det? Hvor mye mer når han bare sier: Vask deg, og du skal bli ren?

But his servants approached him and said, 'My father, if the prophet had told you to do something great, would you not have done it? How much more, then, when he says to you, “Wash and be cleansed”? '

Så gikk han ned og dykket sju ganger i Jordan, som Guds mann hadde sagt, og kroppen hans ble gjenopprettet som kroppen til en liten gutt, og han ble ren.

So he went down and dipped himself in the Jordan seven times, as the man of God had instructed him. His flesh was restored and became clean like that of a young boy.

Then Naaman and all his entourage returned to the man of God. They stood before him, and Naaman said, 'Now I know that there is no God in all the earth except in Israel. Please accept a gift from your servant.'

Men Elisja svarte: Så sant Herren lever, han som jeg står foran, jeg vil ikke ta imot noe. Og selv om Naaman insisterte, nektet han.

But Elisha replied, 'As surely as the LORD lives, whom I serve, I will not accept a thing.' Even though Naaman urged him, he refused.

Da sa Naaman: Om ikke, så la meg, din tjener, få ta med meg så mye jord som kan bæres av et par muldyr. For din tjener vil aldri mer ofre brennoffer eller slaktoffer til andre guder enn Herren.

Then Naaman said, 'If you will not, please let your servant be given as much soil as two mules can carry, because from now on your servant will not offer any burnt offering or sacrifice to any other gods but to the LORD.'

Men én ting må Herren tilgi din tjener: Når min herre drar inn i Rimmons tempel for å tilbe der og støtter seg på min arm, og jeg også bøyer meg ned i Rimmons tempel, måtte Herren tilgi din tjener for dette.

But may the LORD forgive your servant in this one matter: When my master enters the temple of Rimmon to bow down, and he is leaning on my arm and I bow there also—when I bow down in the temple of Rimmon, may the LORD forgive your servant for this.'

Elisja sa til ham: Gå i fred. Så dro Naaman av sted et stykke land.

'Go in peace,' Elisha said. So Naaman departed and traveled some distance.

Gehasi, tjeneren til Elisja, Guds mann, sa til seg selv: Min herre har spart denne arameeren Naaman ved ikke å ta imot hva han hadde med seg. Så sant Herren lever, jeg vil løpe etter ham og ta noe fra ham.

Gehazi, the servant of Elisha, the man of God, said to himself, 'Look, my master has let this Aramean, Naaman, go without accepting what he brought. As surely as the LORD lives, I will run after him and take something from him.'

Så løp Gehasi etter Naaman. Da Naaman så noen løpe etter seg, steg han av vognen for å møte ham og sa: Er alt i orden?

So Gehazi pursued Naaman. When Naaman saw someone running after him, he got down from his chariot to meet him and asked, 'Is everything all right?'

Han svarte: Ja, men min herre har sendt meg og sier: Nå nettopp har det kommet to unge menn fra Efraims fjell, fra profetsønnene. Gi dem, vær så snill, en talent sølv og to sett klær.

Gehazi replied, 'Everything is all right. My master has sent me to say, “Two young men from the company of the prophets in the hill country of Ephraim have just come to me. Please give them a talent of silver and two sets of clothes.”'

Naaman sa: Vær så snill, ta to talenter! Han insisterte og pakket to talenter sølv i to sekker, sammen med to sett klær, og overlot dem til to av tjenerne sine, som bar dem foran Gehasi.

Naaman said, 'Please take two talents.' He urged Gehazi, tied up two talents of silver in two bags, along with two sets of clothes, and gave them to his two servants, who carried them ahead of Gehazi.

Da han kom til høyden, tok Gehasi sekkene fra dem og la dem i huset sitt. Så sendte han mennene av gårde, og de dro.

When Gehazi came to the hill, he took the gifts from the servants and stored them inside the house. Then he sent the men away, and they left.

Da Gehasi kom inn til sin herre, spurte Elisja: Hvor har du vært, Gehasi? Han svarte: Din tjener har ikke vært noe sted.

When Gehazi went inside and stood before his master, Elisha asked him, 'Where have you been, Gehazi?' He answered, 'Your servant didn’t go anywhere.'

Men Elisja sa til ham: Var ikke min ånd med deg da mannen steg ned fra vognen for å møte deg? Er det tid for å ta imot penger og klær, oliventrær og vingårder, sauer og storfe, tjenere og tjenestepiker?

But Elisha said to him, 'Was my spirit not with you when the man got down from his chariot to meet you? Is this the time to take money or accept clothes, olive groves, vineyards, sheep, cattle, male servants, and female servants?'

Naamans spedalskhet skal henge ved deg og dine etterkommere for alltid. Så gikk han ut fra Elisja, spedalsk, hvit som snø.

Naaman’s leprosy will cling to you and to your descendants forever.' Then Gehazi went out from Elisha's presence, leprous, as white as snow.
