But the land could not support them while they stayed together, because their possessions were so great that they could not remain together.

Det oppsto strid mellom Abrams hyrder og Lots hyrder. Kanaanittene og perisittene bodde da i landet.

There was strife between the herdsmen of Abram's livestock and the herdsmen of Lot's livestock. The Canaanites and Perizzites were also dwelling in the land at that time.

Abram sa til Lot: "La det ikke være strid mellom deg og meg eller mellom dine og mine hyrder, for vi er brødre.

So Abram said to Lot, "Let there be no conflict between you and me, or between your herdsmen and my herdsmen, for we are kin.

Lot løftet blikket og så hele Jordan-dalen, som var rik på vann, før Herren ødela Sodoma og Gomorra, som Herrens hage, som Egypt, når du kommer til Soar.

Lot lifted up his eyes and saw that the entire plain of the Jordan was well watered everywhere—this was before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah—like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt as you go to Zoar.

So Lot chose for himself the entire plain of the Jordan, and Lot journeyed eastward. Thus, they separated from each other.

Abram lived in the land of Canaan, while Lot settled in the cities of the plain and pitched his tents near Sodom.

Now the men of Sodom were wicked and great sinners against the LORD.

The LORD said to Abram after Lot had separated from him, "Lift up your eyes from where you are and look to the north, south, east, and west.

for hele landet som du ser, vil jeg gi deg og din ætt for evig.

For all the land you see, I will give to you and your descendants forever.

I will make your descendants like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust of the earth, your descendants could also be counted.

Reis deg, vandre gjennom landet i dets lengde og bredde, for jeg vil gi det til deg."

Arise, walk through the land, its length and its breadth, for I will give it to you.

Abram slo sine telt opp og kom og bodde ved eikelunden i Mamre, som er i Hebron, og bygde der et alter for Herren.

So Abram moved his tent and went to live by the oaks of Mamre, which are in Hebron. There he built an altar to the LORD.
