Og det skjedde etter disse hendelser at Gud satte Abraham på prøve, og sa til ham: 'Abraham'. Og han svarte: 'Her er jeg'.

After these events, God tested Abraham and said to him, 'Abraham!' And he replied, 'Here I am.'

Da sa han: 'Ta nå din sønn, din eneste, som du elsker, Isak, og dra til Moria land og offer ham der som et brennoffer på et av fjellene jeg vil si deg'.

Then God said, 'Take your son, your only son, whom you love—Isaac—and go to the land of Moriah. Offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about.'

Tidlig om morgenen sto Abraham opp, salte eselet sitt, tok med seg to tjenere og sin sønn Isak, kløvde ved til brennofferet og dro til stedet som Gud hadde sagt ham.

Abraham got up early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took with him two of his young men and his son Isaac. He split the wood for the burnt offering, set out, and went to the place God had told him to go.

På den tredje dagen løftet Abraham blikket og så stedet langt borte.

On the third day, Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance.

Abraham sa til tjenerne sine: 'Bli her med eselet, mens jeg og gutten går dit opp for å tilbe og så kommer tilbake til dere'.

Abraham said to his servants, 'Stay here with the donkey. The boy and I will go over there to worship, and then we will come back to you.'

Abraham tok ved til brennofferet og la det på Isak, sin sønn. Selv bar han ilden og kniven, og de gikk sammen.

Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac. He carried the fire and the knife in his own hands, and the two of them walked on together.

Isak sa til Abraham, sin far: 'Far'. Han svarte: 'Ja, min sønn'. Isak sa: 'Her er ilden og veden, men hvor er lammet til brennofferet?'

Isaac spoke to his father Abraham, 'My father!' 'Here I am, my son,' Abraham replied. Isaac said, 'The fire and the wood are here, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?'

Abraham svarte: 'Gud vil selv sørge for lammet til brennofferet, min sønn'. Og de gikk sammen.

Abraham answered, 'God Himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.' And the two of them walked on together.

Da de kom til det stedet Gud hadde sagt, bygde Abraham et alter der og la veden i orden, bandt Isak, sin sønn, og la ham på alteret over veden.

When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there, arranged the wood on it, bound his son Isaac, and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood.

Så rakte Abraham ut hånden og tok kniven for å ofre sin sønn.

Then Abraham reached out his hand, took the knife, and prepared to slaughter his son.

Men Herrens engel ropte til ham fra himmelen: 'Abraham, Abraham'. Og han svarte: 'Her er jeg'.

But the angel of the LORD called to him from heaven, 'Abraham! Abraham!' And he replied, 'Here I am.'

Da sa engelen: 'Rør ikke gutten, og gjør ham ikke noe. For nå vet jeg at du frykter Gud, siden du ikke har spart din sønn, din eneste, fra meg'.

The angel said, 'Do not lay a hand on the boy. Do not harm him in any way, for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.'

Abraham løftet blikket og så en vær som hang fast i buskene ved hornene. Han tok væren og ofret den som et brennoffer i stedet for sin sønn.

Then Abraham looked up and saw a ram caught by its horns in a thicket. So he went and took the ram, and he offered it as a burnt offering instead of his son.

Abraham kalte det stedet 'Herren vil sørge for'. Derfor sies det til denne dag: 'På Herrens berg skal det sørges for'.

And Abraham named that place 'The LORD Will Provide,' as it is said to this day, 'On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided.'

Herrens engel ropte en gang til til Abraham fra himmelen

Then the angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time from heaven,

og sa: 'Ved meg selv har jeg sverget, sier Herren, fordi du har gjort dette og ikke spart din sønn, din eneste,

and said, 'By Myself I have sworn, declares the LORD, because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son,

skal jeg velsigne deg rikelig og gjøre ditt folk tallrikt som stjernene på himmelen og som sanden ved havets bredd. Ditt folk skal innta portene til sine fiender.

I will surely bless you and will greatly multiply your offspring like the stars of the heavens and like the sand on the seashore, and your offspring will possess the gates of their enemies.

Og i din slekt skal alle jordens nasjoner velsignes, fordi du har lyttet til min røst'.

And through your offspring all the nations of the earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.'

Så vendte Abraham tilbake til sine tjenere, og de dro sammen til Beersheba. Og Abraham ble boende i Beersheba.

Then Abraham returned to his young men, and together they set out and went to Beersheba, and Abraham settled in Beersheba.

Det skjedde etter disse hendelsene at det ble fortalt Abraham: 'Milka har også født sønner for din bror Nahor.'

After these things, it was told to Abraham, 'Behold, Milcah has also borne children to your brother Nahor:

De er Us, hans førstefødte, Bus, hans bror, Kemuel, far til Aram,

Uz his firstborn, Buz his brother, Kemuel the father of Aram,

Késed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaf og Betuel.

Chesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel.'

Betuel ble far til Rebekka. Disse åtte barna fødte Milka til Nahor, Abrahams bror.

Bethuel fathered Rebekah. These eight children Milcah bore to Nahor, Abraham's brother.

Hans medhustru, Reuma, fødte også Teba, Gaham, Tahasj og Maaka.

And his concubine, whose name was Reumah, also bore Tebah, Gaham, Tahash, and Maacah.
