Isaac called Jacob, blessed him, and commanded him, saying, 'Do not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan.'

Arise, go to Paddan-Aram, to the house of Bethuel, your mother's father, and take a wife for yourself from there, from the daughters of Laban, your mother's brother.

Isaac sent Jacob away, and he went to Paddan-Aram, to Laban, son of Bethuel the Aramean, the brother of Rebekah, Jacob and Esau's mother.

Esau så at Isaak hadde velsignet Jakob og sendt ham til Paddan-Aram for å få seg en kone der, og at han hadde befalt Jakob og sagt: Du skal ikke ta en kone fra Kanaans døtre.

Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him to Paddan-Aram to take a wife from there, and that when he blessed him, he commanded him, 'You shall not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan.'

Jacob obeyed his father and his mother and went to Paddan-Aram.

Esau realized that the daughters of Canaan were displeasing to Isaac his father.

Så dro Esau til Ismael og tok Mahalat, datter av Abraham-sønnen Ismael, søster til Nebajot, til kone i tillegg til de konene han allerede hadde.

So Esau went to Ishmael and took Mahalath, the daughter of Ishmael, Abraham's son, the sister of Nebaioth, as an additional wife to his existing wives.

Jakob dro fra Beersheba og reiste til Haran.

Jacob left Beersheba and set out for Haran.

Han kom til et sted hvor han overnattet, for solen hadde gått ned. Han tok en av steinene der og la den under hodet og la seg til å sove på det stedet.

He came to a certain place, stayed there for the night because the sun had set. He took one of the stones from the place, put it under his head, and lay down in that place.

And he dreamed; behold, there was a ladder set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven. The angels of God were ascending and descending on it.

And there was the Lord standing above it, and He said, 'I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. The land on which you are lying, I will give to you and to your descendants.'

Din slekt skal bli som støvet på jorden, og du skal bre deg ut mot vest og øst, nord og sør. I deg og din ætt skal alle slekter på jorden velsignes.

Your descendants will be as numerous as the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west, to the east, to the north, and to the south. Through you and your descendants, all the families of the earth will be blessed.

Se, jeg er med deg og vil bevare deg overalt hvor du går, og jeg vil bringe deg tilbake til dette landet. Jeg vil ikke forlate deg før jeg har gjort det jeg har sagt til deg.

Look, I am with you, and I will guard you wherever you go. I will bring you back to this land, because I will not leave you until I have done everything I promised you.

Da Jakob våknet av søvnen, sa han: Sannelig, HERREN er på dette stedet, og jeg visste det ikke.

Jacob woke up from his sleep and said, 'Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it.'

Han ble grepet av frykt og sa: Hvor fryktsomt er ikke dette stedet! Dette er ingen annen enn Guds hus, og dette er himmelens port.

He was afraid and said, 'How amazing is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven.'

Early in the morning, Jacob took the stone he had used as a pillow, set it up as a pillar, and poured oil on its top.

He called the name of that place Bethel, but previously the name of the city was called Luz.

Jakob avla et løfte og sa: Hvis Gud er med meg og vokter meg på denne veien jeg går, gir meg brød å spise og klær å ha på,

Then Jacob made a vow, saying, 'If God will be with me and watch over me on this journey I am taking, and give me food to eat and clothes to wear,

og jeg vender tilbake til min fars hus i fred, da skal HERREN være min Gud.

'so that I return safely to my father’s house, then the Lord will be my God.'

Denne steinen, som jeg har reist som en minnestein, skal være et Guds hus. Og av alt du gir meg, vil jeg gi deg tiende.

And this stone that I have set up as a pillar will be God's house, and of everything you give me, I will surely give a tenth back to you.'
