Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said:

2 Kan en mann være til nytte for Gud, selv om den vise er nyttig for seg selv?

Can a man benefit God? Even a wise man benefits only himself.

3 Er det til glede for Den Allmektige at du er rettferdig, eller er det en vinning for ham at du gjør dine veier fullkomne?

Is it a delight to the Almighty if you are righteous? Or does He gain anything if your ways are blameless?

4 På grunn av din gudsfrykt vil han irettesette deg og gå med deg til dom?

Is it because of your reverence that He rebukes you and brings you into judgment?

5 Er ikke din ondskap stor, og dine synder uten ende?

Is not your wickedness great and your iniquities without end?

6 Du tok pant fra dine brødre uten grunn og rev klærne av de nakne.

For you have taken pledges from your brothers without cause, and stripped the naked of their clothing.

7 Du ga ikke vann til de tørste, og du nektet dem mat som var sultne.

You have not given water to the weary to drink, and you have withheld bread from the hungry.

8 Det var den mektige som eide landet, og den som ble æret som bodde i det.

But the powerful man owns the land, and the honored man dwells in it.

9 Du sendte enker bort tomhendt, og de farløses armer ble knust.

You sent widows away empty-handed, and the arms of the fatherless were crushed.

10 Derfor er det snarer rundt deg, og plutselig frykt skremmer deg.

That is why snares are all around you, and sudden terror overwhelms you.

11 Eller mørket dekker deg så du ikke ser, og en overflod av vann oversvømmer deg.

It is so dark you cannot see, and a flood of waters covers you.

12 Er ikke Gud høyt oppe i himmelen? Se toppen av stjernene, hvor høye de er.

Is not God in the height of heaven? Look at the distant stars; how high they are!

13 Men du sier: 'Hva vet Gud? Kan han dømme gjennom mørket?

But you say, 'What does God know? Can He judge through such thick darkness?'

14 Skyene er et dekke for ham, så han ser ikke, og han går omkring på himmelhvelvingen.'

Clouds cover Him so He cannot see as He walks on the circle of the heavens.

15 Vil du holde deg til den gamle vei som onde mennesker har trådt?

Will you keep to the ancient path that wicked men have walked?

16 De ble ført bort før tiden, og en elv skylte bort deres grunnvoller.

They were snatched away before their time, and their foundation was swept away by a flood.

17 De som sa til Gud: 'Forlat oss!' Hva kan Den Allmektige gjøre for dem?

They said to God, 'Depart from us! What can the Almighty do to us?'

18 Men det var han som fylte deres hus med gode ting, men de gudløses råd er langt borte fra meg.

Yet it was He who filled their houses with good things, though the counsel of the wicked is far from me.

19 De rettferdige ser det og gleder seg, og den uskyldige spotter dem.

The righteous see it and are glad; the innocent mock them.

20 'Våre fiender er utslettet, og ild fortærer deres rest.'

Surely our enemies are destroyed, and fire has consumed their wealth.

21 Bli kjent med ham og vær i fred, så vil det komme deg til gode.

Be reconciled with God now, and at peace with Him; this will bring good to you.

22 Ta imot lære fra hans munn, og legg hans ord i ditt hjerte.

Accept instruction from His mouth and place His words in your heart.

23 Hvis du vender tilbake til Den Allmektige, vil du bli bygd opp. Fjern urett fra ditt telt.

If you return to the Almighty, you will be restored. If you remove injustice far from your tent,

24 Legg gull blant støvet og gullet fra Ofir blant steinene ved elvene.

and assign your gold to the dust, and the gold of Ophir to the rocks in the ravines,

25 Og Den Allmektige vil være din skatt, ditt rikelige sølv.

then the Almighty will be your gold and your precious silver.

26 Da skal du glede deg i Den Allmektige og løfte ditt ansikt til Gud.

For then you will take delight in the Almighty and lift up your face to God.

27 Du skal be til ham, og han vil høre deg. Og du skal oppfylle dine løfter.

You will pray to Him, and He will hear you, and you will fulfill your vows.

28 Hva du bestemmer, skal lykkes, og lys skal skinne på dine veier.

Whatever you decide will succeed, and light will shine on your ways.

29 Når noen blir ydmyket og du sier: 'Opphøyelse', så vil Gud redde den nedslåtte.

When people are humbled and you say, 'Lift them up,' God will save the downcast.

30 Han vil også fri den uskyldige, som blir reddet ved dine henders renhet.

He will even deliver one who is not innocent, who will be delivered through the cleanness of your hands.
