Now when Adoni-Zedek, king of Jerusalem, heard how Joshua had captured Ai and devoted it to destruction—doing to Ai and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king—and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were living among them,

“Come up to me and help me; let us attack Gibeon, for it has made peace with Joshua and the people of Israel.”

Then the five kings of the Amorites—the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish, and Eglon—joined forces, and they and their armies moved out, camped near Gibeon, and prepared to attack it.

Innbyggerne i Gibea sendte bud til Josva i leiren ved Gilgal og sa: «Ikke hold deg unna dine tjenere! Kom raskt opp til oss og redd oss, hjelp oss! For alle amorittkongene som bor i fjelllandet, har samlet seg mot oss.»

The men of Gibeon sent a message to Joshua at the camp in Gilgal: “Do not abandon your servants. Come up to us quickly and save us! Help us, for all the kings of the Amorites living in the hill country have gathered against us.”

Josva dro opp fra Gilgal sammen med hele folket som var i kampstyrken, de tapre krigere.

So Joshua marched up from Gilgal with all the warriors and the mighty men of valor.

And the LORD said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid of them. I have given them into your hand; not one of them will be able to stand against you.”

After marching all night from Gilgal, Joshua took them by surprise.

And the LORD threw them into panic before Israel, and Joshua and his forces inflicted a great defeat on them at Gibeon. They pursued them along the road to the Beth-horon ascent and struck them down as far as Azekah and Makkedah.

As they fled before Israel down the road from Beth-horon to Azekah, the LORD hurled large hailstones down on them from heaven, and they died. More of them died from the hailstones than were killed by the swords of the Israelites.

On the day the LORD gave the Amorites over to Israel, Joshua spoke to the LORD in the presence of Israel: “Sun, stand still over Gibeon, and moon, over the Valley of Aijalon.”

Da sto solen stille, og månen stanset, inntil folket hadde hevnet seg på sine fiender. Er dette ikke skrevet i Den oppriktiges bok? Slik ble solen stående midt på himmelen og hastet ikke med å gå ned i omtrent en hel dag.

And the sun stood still, and the moon halted until the nation took vengeance on their enemies. Is this not written in the Book of Jashar? The sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed going down for about a full day.

Aldri har det vært en dag som denne, verken før eller senere, da Herren hørte på en manns røst. For Herren kjempet for Israel.

There has never been a day like it, before or since, when the LORD listened to a human being, because the LORD fought for Israel.

Deretter vendte Josva og hele Israel med ham tilbake til leiren ved Gilgal.

Then Joshua, along with all Israel, returned to the camp at Gilgal.

De fem kongene flyktet og gjemte seg i hulen ved Makkeda.

Meanwhile, the five kings fled and hid themselves in the cave at Makkedah.

Men det ble meldt til Josva: «De fem kongene er funnet skjult i hulen ved Makkeda.»

It was reported to Joshua, saying, “The five kings have been discovered hiding in the cave at Makkedah.”

Josva sa: «Rull store steiner foran åpningen til hulen, og sett vakter der for å vokte dem.

And Joshua commanded, “Roll large stones over the mouth of the cave and post men there to guard them.”

But as for you, do not stop! Pursue your enemies and attack them from behind. Do not allow them to enter their cities, for the LORD your God has delivered them into your hands.”

So Joshua and the Israelites completely defeated them with a great slaughter, almost wiping them out. But a few survivors managed to retreat to their fortified cities.

Then the entire army returned safely to Joshua at the camp in Makkedah, and no one dared to criticize the people of Israel.

And Joshua said, “Open the mouth of the cave and bring out the five kings to me.”

They did so, and brought out the five kings from the cave—the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish, and Eglon.

When they brought out these kings to Joshua, he summoned all the men of Israel and said to the commanders of the warriors who had gone with him, 'Come forward and put your feet on the necks of these kings.' So they came forward and placed their feet on their necks.

Josva sa til dem: «Frykt ikke, og vær ikke redde, vær modige og sterke! For slik skal Herren gjøre med alle deres fiender som dere kjemper mot.»

Then Joshua said to them, 'Do not be afraid or discouraged. Be strong and courageous, for this is what the LORD will do to all the enemies you fight against.'

Josva slo dem deretter i hjel og hengte dem på fem trær. De ble hengende på trærne til kvelden.

After this, Joshua struck them down and put them to death. He hanged them on five trees, and they were left hanging on the trees until evening.

At sunset, Joshua ordered them to be taken down from the trees and thrown into the cave where they had hidden. Large stones were placed over the opening of the cave, which remain there to this day.

Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Makkedah to Libnah and fought against it.

The LORD gave Libnah into Israel's hands, along with its king. Joshua put the city and everyone in it to the sword, leaving no survivors. He treated its king as he had treated the king of Jericho.

Then Joshua and all Israel with him advanced from Libnah to Lachish. They camped against it and fought against it.

The LORD gave Lachish into Israel's hands, and they captured it on the second day. They put it to the sword, along with everyone in it, just as they had done to Libnah.

Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish, but Joshua defeated him and his people, leaving no survivors.

Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Lachish to Eglon. They camped against it and fought it.

They captured it that same day and struck it down with the edge of the sword. They completely destroyed every person in it, just as they had done to Lachish.

Then Joshua and all Israel with him went up from Eglon to Hebron, and they fought against it.

They captured it and struck it down with the edge of the sword, including its king, its villages, and every person in it. He left no survivors, just as he had done to Eglon. He utterly destroyed the city and everyone in it.

Then Joshua and all Israel with him turned back to Debir and fought against it.

They captured it, its king, and all its villages. They struck them with the edge of the sword and completely destroyed everyone in it, leaving no survivors. They did to Debir and its king as they had done to Hebron, to Libnah, and its king.

Så slo Josva hele landet: fjellene, Negev, lavlandet, skråningene og alle deres konger. Han lot ingen bli igjen, men viet alt levende til ødeleggelse, slik Herren, Israels Gud, hadde befalt.

So Joshua conquered the whole country—the hill country, the Negev, the lowland, and the slopes—along with all their kings. He left no survivors but devoted every living thing to destruction, just as the LORD, the God of Israel, had commanded.

Og Josva slo dem fra Kadesj-Barnea til Gaza og hele området rundt Gosen, og helt til Gibea.

Joshua struck them from Kadesh-barnea to Gaza, and the entire region of Goshen as far as Gibeon.

Alle disse kongene og deres land tok Josva på én gang, fordi Herren, Israels Gud, kjempet for Israel.

Joshua captured all these kings and their lands at one time because the LORD, the God of Israel, fought for Israel.

Then Joshua and all Israel with him returned to the camp at Gilgal.
