A long time later, after the LORD had given rest to Israel from all their enemies around them, Joshua had grown old and was advanced in years.

Josva kalte da til seg hele Israel, deres eldste, deres ledere, deres dommere og deres offiserer, og han sa til dem: «Jeg er blitt gammel og gått langt opp i årene.

Joshua called all Israel together—its elders, leaders, judges, and officials—and said to them, 'I have grown old and am well along in years.'

You have seen everything the LORD your God has done to all the nations before you, for the LORD your God is the one who fought for you.

See, I have allotted to you these remaining nations as an inheritance for your tribes, along with all the nations I have destroyed—from the Jordan to the Great Sea in the west.

The LORD your God will drive them out from before you and dispossess them from your sight, so you will take possession of their land, just as the LORD your God promised you.

Do not associate with these nations that remain among you. Do not invoke the names of their gods, swear by them, serve them, or bow down to them.

But you are to cling to the LORD your God, as you have done to this day.

For Herren har drevet bort store og sterke nasjoner fra foran dere, og inntil i dag har ingen vært i stand til å stå imot dere.

The LORD has driven out great and powerful nations before you, and no one has been able to stand against you to this day.

En mann av dere kan jage tusen, for Herren deres Gud kjemper for dere, slik han har lovet dere.

One of you will chase a thousand, because the LORD your God fights for you, just as He promised.

Vær derfor meget på vakt for dere selv, at dere elsker Herren deres Gud.

Be very careful to love the LORD your God.

Men hvis dere på noen måte skulle vende tilbake og holde dere til resten av disse nasjonene, de som er igjen blant dere, og inngå ekteskap med dem og bli en med dem og de med dere,

But if you turn away and ally yourselves with the survivors of these nations that remain among you, and if you intermarry with them and associate with them,

så skal dere vite for sikkert at Herren deres Gud ikke lenger vil drive disse nasjonene bort fra dere. De skal bli en snare og en felle for dere, og en svøpe på deres side og torner i deres øyne, inntil dere går til grunne fra dette gode landet som Herren deres Gud har gitt dere.

then you can be certain that the LORD your God will no longer drive out these nations before you. Instead, they will become snares and traps for you, whips on your sides and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from this good land the LORD your God has given you.

Se, jeg vandrer i dag den vei som hele jorden går, og dere må vite med hele deres hjerte og hele deres sjel, at ikke ett ord av alt det gode som Herren deres Gud har talt til dere, har sviktet; alt er gått i oppfyllelse for dere, ikke ett eneste ord har slått feil.

Now behold, I am about to go the way of all the earth, and you know in your hearts and souls that not one word has failed of all the good promises the LORD your God gave you. All of them have been fulfilled for you; not one word has failed.

Men like sikkert som alt det gode som Herren deres Gud har talt til dere, har kommet, like sikkert vil Herren bringe over dere alt det onde, inntil han har utryddet dere fra dette gode landet som Herren deres Gud har gitt dere.

But just as all the good things the LORD your God promised you have come to pass, so too the LORD will bring upon you the bad things He threatened, until He has destroyed you from this good land that the LORD your God has given you.

Når dere bryter Herrens deres Guds pakt, som han befalte dere, og går og tjener andre guder og bøyer dere ned for dem, vil Herrens vrede bli opptent mot dere, og dere vil raskt gå til grunne fra det gode landet som han har gitt dere.

If you violate the covenant of the LORD your God, which He commanded you, and go and serve other gods and bow down to them, the anger of the LORD will burn against you, and you will quickly perish from the good land He has given you.
