The Israelites again did what was evil in the sight of the LORD after Ehud had died.

2 Herren overgav dem i hånden til Jabin, kongen av Kanaan, som regjerte i Hasor. Hærføreren hans var Sisera, som bodde i Harosjet-haggoyim.

So the LORD sold them into the hand of Jabin, king of Canaan, who reigned in Hazor, and the commander of his army was Sisera, who lived in Harosheth-hagoyim.

3 Israelittene ropte til Herren, for Sisera hadde ni hundre jernvogner og undertrykte Israelittene hardt i tjue år.

The Israelites cried out to the LORD for help, for Sisera had nine hundred iron chariots, and he oppressed the Israelites cruelly for twenty years.

4 Debora, en profetinne og Lappidots kone, var dommer i Israel på den tiden.

Now Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lappidoth, was judging Israel at that time.

5 Hun satt under Deboras palme mellom Rama og Betel i Efraims fjellområde, og Israelittene kom opp til henne for å få dom.

She would sit under the Palm of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in the hill country of Ephraim, and the Israelites came up to her for judgment.

6 Hun sendte bud og kalte på Barak, sønn av Abinoam fra Kedesj i Naftali, og sa til ham: «Har ikke Herren, Israels Gud, befalt deg: Gå av sted mot Tabor-fjellet, og ta med deg ti tusen menn fra Naftali og Sebulon?

She summoned Barak son of Abinoam from Kedesh in Naphtali and said to him, "Has not the LORD, the God of Israel, commanded you: 'Go, lead ten thousand men from Naphtali and Zebulun to Mount Tabor'"?

7 Jeg vil trekke Sisera, hærføreren for Jabins hær, mot deg ved Kishon-bekken med hans vogner og mangefolk, og jeg vil gi ham i din hånd.»

"I will draw Sisera, the commander of Jabin’s army, with his chariots and his horde to the Kishon River and deliver him into your hand."

8 Barak sa til henne: «Hvis du går med meg, vil jeg gå; men hvis du ikke går med meg, vil jeg ikke gå.»

Barak said to her, "If you will go with me, I will go; but if you will not go with me, I will not go."

9 Hun svarte: «Jeg vil gå med deg, men du vil ikke få æren i den veien du går, for Herren vil overgi Sisera i en kvinnes hånd.» Så stod Debora opp og gikk med Barak til Kedesj.

She said, "I will certainly go with you. However, the honor will not be yours on the journey you are about to take, for the LORD will deliver Sisera into the hands of a woman." So Deborah arose and went with Barak to Kedesh.

10 Barak kalte sammen Sebulon og Naftali til Kedesj, og han dro opp med ti tusen mann under sine føtter, og Debora dro opp med ham.

Barak summoned Zebulun and Naphtali to Kedesh, and ten thousand men followed him on foot, and Deborah went up with him.

11 Heber kenitten hadde skilt seg fra kenittene, etterkommere av Hobab, svigerfar til Moses, og slått opp sitt telt ved eiken i Saanajim, nær Kedesj.

Meanwhile, Heber the Kenite had separated from the Kenites, the descendants of Hobab, the father-in-law of Moses, and pitched his tent near the great tree in Zaanannim, which is beside Kedesh.

12 Da fikk Sisera vite at Barak, Abinoams sønn, hadde dratt opp til Tabor-fjellet.

When Sisera was told that Barak son of Abinoam had gone up to Mount Tabor,

13 Sisera samlet sammen alle sine vogner, ni hundre jernvogner, og hele hæren som var med ham, fra Harosjet-haggoyim til Kishon-bekken.

Sisera summoned all his chariots—nine hundred chariots made of iron—and all his troops who were with him, from Harosheth-hagoyim to the Kishon River.

14 Debora sa til Barak: «Stå opp! For dette er dagen da Herren har gitt Sisera i din hånd. Har ikke Herren gått foran deg?» Så dro Barak ned fra Tabor-fjellet, og ti tusen mann fulgte ham.

Then Deborah said to Barak, "Get up! This is the day the LORD has delivered Sisera into your hand. Has not the LORD gone ahead of you?" So Barak went down from Mount Tabor with ten thousand men following him.

15 Herren slo Sisera og all hans vogner og hele hæren hans med forvirring foran Barak, så Sisera steg ned fra vognen og flyktet til fots.

The LORD threw Sisera, all his chariots, and his entire army into confusion before Barak by the edge of the sword. Sisera got down from his chariot and fled on foot.

16 Men Barak forfulgte vognene og hæren til Harosjet-haggoyim, og hele Sisera's hær falt for sverdets egg; ikke én overlevde.

Barak pursued the chariots and the army to Harosheth-hagoyim, and the entire army of Sisera fell by the sword; not a single man was left.

17 Sisera flyktet til fots til teltet til Jael, kona til Heber kenitten, for det var fred mellom Jabin, kongen av Hasor, og Hebers hus.

Meanwhile, Sisera fled on foot to the tent of Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite, because there was peace between Jabin, king of Hazor, and the family of Heber the Kenite.

18 Jael gikk ut for å møte Sisera og sa til ham: «Kom inn, min herre, kom inn til meg, vær ikke redd!» Han kom inn til henne i teltet, og hun dekket ham med et teppe.

Jael went out to meet Sisera and said to him, "Come, my lord, come right in. Don't be afraid." So he entered her tent, and she covered him with a blanket.

19 Han sa til henne: «Gi meg litt vann å drikke, for jeg er tørst.» Hun åpnet en melkeflaske og ga ham å drikke, og dekket ham igjen.

He said to her, "Please give me a little water to drink, for I am thirsty." So she opened a skin of milk, gave him a drink, and covered him again.

20 Han sa til henne: «Stå ved inngangen til teltet. Hvis noen kommer og spør deg om det er noen her, så si nei.»

He said to her, "Stand at the entrance to the tent. If anyone comes and asks you, 'Is there a man here?' say, 'No.'"

21 Så tok Jael, Hebers kone, en teltplugg og en hammer i hånden, gikk stille inn til ham og slo pluggen gjennom tinningen hans, så den gikk ned i bakken mens han sov tungt av utmattelse. Og han døde.

But Jael, the wife of Heber, picked up a tent peg and a hammer, and she went quietly to him while he lay fast asleep, exhausted. She drove the peg through his temple into the ground—and he died.

22 Barak kom etter Sisera, og Jael gikk for å møte ham. Hun sa til ham: «Kom, jeg skal vise deg mannen du leter etter.» Da gikk han inn med henne, og Sisera lå død med pluggen gjennom tinningen.

Just then, Barak came by in pursuit of Sisera, and Jael went out to meet him. She said, "Come, and I will show you the man you're looking for." So he went in with her, and there lay Sisera with the tent peg through his temple—dead.

23 På den dagen ydmyket Gud Jabin, kongen av Kanaan, foran israelittene.

On that day God subdued Jabin, the king of Canaan, before the Israelites.

24 Israelittenes hånd ble hardere og hardere mot Jabin, kongen av Kanaan, til de utryddet Jabin, kongen av Kanaan.

And the hand of the Israelites grew stronger and stronger against Jabin, the king of Canaan, until they destroyed him.
