På den tiden kom Johannes Døperen og forkynte i Judeas ørken.

At that time, John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea,

Han sa: «Omvend dere, for himmelriket har kommet nær.»

and saying, 'Repent, because the kingdom of heaven has come near.'

Det er om ham profeten Jesaja talte da han sa: «En røst roper i ørkenen: Gjør Herrens vei klar, gjør hans stier rette.»

This is the one who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah: 'A voice of one crying out in the wilderness: Prepare the way for the Lord; make His paths straight.'

Johannes bar en kappe av kamelhår og hadde et lærbelte rundt livet, og maten hans var gresshopper og vill honning.

Now John himself had a garment made of camel’s hair, and a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey.

Da dro Jerusalem ut til ham, og hele Judea og hele distriktet omkring Jordan.

Then people from Jerusalem, all Judea, and the entire region around the Jordan were going out to him,

De ble døpt av ham i elven Jordan mens de bekjente sine synder.

and they were being baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins.

Men da han så mange av fariseerne og saddukeerne komme for å bli døpt, sa han til dem: «Ormeyngel! Hvem lærte dere å flykte fra den kommende vrede?»

But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, 'You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?

Bær derfor frukt som svarer til omvendelsen.

Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.

Og tro ikke at dere kan si til dere selv: ‘Vi har Abraham til far.’ Jeg sier dere: Gud kan oppreise barn for Abraham av disse steinene.

And do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that God is able to raise up children for Abraham from these stones.

Øksen ligger allerede ved roten av trærne. Hvert tre som ikke bærer god frukt, blir hogget ned og kastet på ilden.

Even now the axe is laid at the root of the trees. Therefore, every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.

Jeg døper dere med vann til omvendelse. Men en som er mektigere enn jeg, kommer etter meg. Han hvis sko jeg ikke er verdig til å bære. Han skal døpe dere med Den hellige ånd og ild.

I baptize you with water for repentance, but the one who is coming after me is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

Han har sikten i hånden for å renske sin treskeplass grundig og samle sitt korn i låven, men agnene vil han brenne opp i ild som aldri slukner.

His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing floor. He will gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.

Da kom Jesus fra Galilea til Jordan til Johannes for å bli døpt av ham.

Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan, to John, to be baptized by him.

Men Johannes forsøkte å hindre ham og sa: «Jeg trenger å bli døpt av deg, og så kommer du til meg?»

But John tried to stop Him, saying, 'I need to be baptized by You, and yet You are coming to me?'

Jesus svarte: «La det nå skje! For det er slik vi skal oppfylle all rettferdighet.» Da lot Johannes ham gjøre det.

Jesus answered him, 'Allow it for now, because this is the proper way for us to fulfill all righteousness.' Then John allowed Him.

Da Jesus var blitt døpt, steg han straks opp av vannet. Og se, himlene åpnet seg, og han så Guds Ånd stige ned som en due og komme over ham.

After Jesus was baptized, He immediately came up from the water. At that moment, the heavens were opened, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming upon Him.

Og se, en røst fra himmelen sa: «Dette er min Sønn, den elskede, som jeg har behag i.»

And a voice from heaven said, 'This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.'
