When the Canaanite king of Arad, who lived in the Negev, heard that Israel was taking the route through Atharim, he fought against Israel and captured some of them.

Then Israel made a vow to the LORD, saying, 'If You indeed deliver this people into our hands, we will completely destroy their cities.'

The LORD listened to Israel’s request and gave the Canaanites into their hands. They utterly destroyed them and their cities, and the place was called Hormah.

Så reiste de fra Hor-fjellet mot Rødehavet for å gå rundt Edoms land, men folket ble utålmodig underveis.

They journeyed from Mount Hor by way of the Red Sea to go around the land of Edom, and the people became impatient along the way.

Folket klagde mot Gud og Moses: "Hvorfor førte du oss opp fra Egypt for å dø i ørkenen? Det er verken brød eller vann her, og vi avskyr dette elendige brødet."

The people spoke against God and Moses: 'Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? There is no bread, no water, and we detest this miserable food!'

Da sendte Herren brennende slanger blant folket. De bet folket, og mange israelitter døde.

Then the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many Israelites died.

Folket kom til Moses og sa: "Vi har syndet, for vi har talt mot Herren og mot deg. Be til Herren om å fjerne slangene fra oss." Så ba Moses for folket.

The people came to Moses and said, 'We have sinned, for we spoke against the LORD and against you. Pray to the LORD to take the serpents away from us.' So Moses prayed for the people.

Herren sa til Moses: "Lag en brennende slange og sett den på en stang. Enhver som er bitt og ser på den, skal leve."

The LORD said to Moses, 'Make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole. Anyone who is bitten and looks at it will live.'

Moses laget en kobberslange og satte den på en stang. Når noen ble bitt av en slange og så på kobberslangen, levde de.

So Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on a pole, and if a serpent bit someone, they looked at the bronze serpent and lived.

Israels barn brøt opp og slo leir i Obot.

The Israelites journeyed on and camped at Oboth.

De brøt opp fra Obot og slo leir ved Iye-Abarim i ørkenen som vender mot Moab, mot soloppgangen.

They set out from Oboth and camped at Iye-Abarim, in the wilderness facing Moab toward the sunrise.

From there they journeyed and camped in the Valley of Zered.

Derfra dro de og slo leir på den andre siden av Arnon, i ørkenen som går ut fra amorittenes land. For Arnon er grenselinjen mellom Moab og amorittene.

They set out from there and camped beyond the Arnon, which flows through the wilderness out of the Amorite territory. The Arnon was the border between Moab and the Amorites.

Derfor står det i boken om Herrens kriger: "Vaheb i Sufa og ravinene til Arnon,"

Therefore, it is said in the Book of the Wars of the LORD: 'Waheb in Suphah and the wadis of the Arnon.'

og "skråningen av ravinene som strekker seg til Ar- og lener seg mot Moabs grense."

The ravines of the valleys that extend to the settlement of Ar and rest along the border of Moab.

Fra der dro de til Be'er, den brønnen hvor Herren sa til Moses: "Samle folket, så skal jeg gi dem vann."

From there they went to Beer. This is the well where the LORD said to Moses, 'Gather the people together, and I will give them water.'

Da sang Israel denne sangen: "Spring opp, brønn! Rop til den!"

Then Israel sang this song: 'Spring up, O well—sing to it!'

Brønnen som fyrster gravde, som folkets edle menn gravde med sine staver. Fra ørkenen til Mattanah.

The well that the leaders dug, that the nobles of the people excavated with their scepters and staffs.' From the wilderness they went to Mattanah.

Fra Mattanah til Nahaliel, fra Nahaliel til Bamoth.

From Mattanah they went to Nahaliel, and from Nahaliel to Bamoth.

Fra Bamoth til dalen i Moabs land, til toppen av Pisga som vender mot Jesjimon.

From Bamoth to the valley in Moab, the top of Pisgah, which overlooks the wasteland.

Israel sendte sendebud til amorittkongen Sihon med denne meldingen,

Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, saying,

"La meg få gå gjennom ditt land. Vi skal ikke vende oss bort til noen åker eller vingård, og vi skal ikke drikke vann fra noen brønn. Vi vil gå langs kongens vei til vi har passert dine grenser."

'Let us pass through your land. We will not turn aside into any field or vineyard, nor drink water from any well. We will travel along the King’s Highway until we pass through your territory.'

Men Sihon tillot ikke Israel å gå gjennom sitt land. Han samlet hele sitt folk, dro ut mot Israel i ørkenen og kom til Jahaz for å kjempe mot Israel.

But Sihon would not allow Israel to pass through his territory. He gathered all his people and went out to confront Israel in the wilderness; he came to Jahaz and fought with Israel.

Israel slo ham med sverdets egg og tok hans land fra Arnon til Jabbok, så langt som til ammonittenes grense, for denne grensen var befestet.

Israel defeated him with the sword and took possession of his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, as far as the Ammonites, for the border of the Ammonites was fortified.

Israel inntok alle disse byene og bosatte seg i alle amorittenes byer, i Heshbon og alle dens omliggende bosetninger.

Israel captured all the cities of the Amorites and settled in them, including Heshbon and all its villages.

For Heshbon var Sihons by, amorittenes konge, som hadde kjempet mot Moabs tidligere konge og tatt hele hans land opp til Arnon.

Heshbon was the city of Sihon, king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab and captured all his land up to the Arnon.

Derfor sier de som taler i ordspråk: "Kom til Heshbon, la Sihons by bli bygget og opprettet.

That is why the poets said: 'Come to Heshbon, let it be rebuilt, let Sihon’s city be restored.'

En ild gikk ut fra Heshbon, en flamme fra Sihons by; den fortærte Ar i Moab, herrene over Arnon-høydene.

For fire went out from Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon. It consumed Ar of Moab, the rulers of the high places of the Arnon.

Ve deg, Moab! Du er fortapt, Kemoshs folk! Han har gitt sine sønner til flukt og sine døtre til fangenskap for amorittenes konge, Sihon.

Woe to you, Moab! You have been destroyed, O people of Chemosh! He has given up his sons as fugitives and his daughters as captives to Sihon, king of the Amorites.

Vi har skutt mot dem. Heshbon er ødelagt helt til Dibon; vi la øde helt til Nofa, som strekker seg til Medeba."

But we overthrew them; Heshbon as far as Dibon is destroyed. We devastated Nophah, which reaches to Medeba.

Så bosatte Israel seg i amorittenes land.

So Israel lived in the land of the Amorites.

Moses sent men to spy out Jazer, and they captured its surrounding settlements, driving out the Amorites who were there.

They turned and went up by the way to Bashan. Og, king of Bashan, came out with all his people to meet them in battle at Edrei.

Men Herren sa til Moses: "Vær ikke redd for ham, for jeg har gitt ham og hele hans folk og land i din hånd. Du skal gjøre med ham som du gjorde med Sihon, amorittenes konge, som bodde i Heshbon."

But the LORD said to Moses, 'Do not be afraid of him, for I have given him into your hand, along with all his people and his land. Do to him as you did to Sihon, king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon.'

Og de slo ham, hans sønner og hele hans folk, til det ikke fantes en eneste overlevende igjen. Og de tok hans land i eie.

So they struck down Og, his sons, and all his people, leaving no survivors. Then they took possession of his land.
