Døtrene til Selofhad, sønn av Hefer, sønn av Gilead, sønn av Makir, sønn av Manasse, fra Manasses familie, sønn av Josef, nærmet seg. Og navnene på døtrene var Mahla, Noa, Hogla, Milka og Tirsa.

Then the daughters of Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, from the clans of Manasseh the son of Joseph, came forward. These were the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.

De stilte seg foran Moses og presten Eleasar, foran høvdingene og hele menigheten ved inngangen til telthelligdommen, og sa:

They stood before Moses, Eleazar the priest, the leaders, and the entire assembly at the entrance to the tent of meeting, and said:

Vår far døde i ørkenen. Han var ikke blant dem som samlet seg mot Herren sammen med Korahs krets, men han døde for sin egen synd, og han hadde ingen sønner.

Our father died in the wilderness. He was not part of the group that rebelled against the LORD during Korah’s assembly, but he died because of his own sin. He had no sons.

Hvorfor skal vår fars navn bli utslettet fra hans slekt fordi han ikke hadde noen sønn? Gi oss en eiendom blant vår fars brødre.

Why should our father’s name be removed from among his clan because he had no son? Give us property among our father’s relatives.

Moses la saken deres frem for Herren.

Moses brought their case before the LORD.

Og Herren talte til Moses og sa:

And the LORD said to Moses:

Riktig talte Selofhads døtre. Du skal gi dem en eiendom som arveandel blant deres fars brødre, og overføre deres fars arv til dem.

The daughters of Zelophehad are right. You must certainly give them property as an inheritance among their father’s relatives and transfer their father’s inheritance to them.

Og til Israels barn skal du si: Hvis en mann dør uten å etterlate seg en sønn, skal dere overføre hans arv til hans datter.

Speak to the Israelites and say: If a man dies and has no son, transfer his inheritance to his daughter.

Og hvis han ikke har noen datter, skal dere gi hans arv til hans brødre.

If he has no daughter, give his inheritance to his brothers.

Og hvis han ikke har noen brødre, skal dere gi hans arv til farens brødre.

If he has no brothers, give his inheritance to his father’s brothers.

Og hvis hans far ikke har noen brødre, skal dere gi hans arv til den nærmeste slektning i hans familie, og han skal ta den i eie. Dette skal være en lov for Israels barn, slik Herren befalte Moses.

If his father has no brothers, give his inheritance to the nearest relative in his clan, and they shall possess it. This shall be a legal statute for the Israelites, as the LORD commanded Moses.

Herren sa til Moses: Gå opp på dette Abarim-fjellet, og se landet som jeg har gitt Israels barn.

Then the LORD said to Moses, "Go up this mountain of the Abarim range and see the land that I have given to the Israelites."

Når du har sett det, skal du også bli samlet til ditt folk, slik din bror Aron ble samlet.

After you have seen it, you too will be gathered to your people, as your brother Aaron was.

Fordi dere var ulydige mot meg i ørkenen Sin, da menigheten gjorde opprør, og dere ikke helliget meg ved vannet foran deres øyne; dette var ved Meribas vann i Kadesh i ørkenen Sin.

This is because you rebelled against my command in the Wilderness of Zin, during the assembly’s strife, when you failed to uphold my holiness before their eyes at the waters. These are the waters of Meribah at Kadesh, in the Wilderness of Zin.

Moses talte til Herren og sa:

Moses spoke to the LORD, saying:

Må Herren, all ånds Gud, utpeke en mann over menigheten,

May the LORD, the God of the spirits of all humankind, appoint a man over the assembly

som kan gå ut og inn foran dem, og som kan lede dem ut og inn, så Herrens menighet ikke blir som sauer uten gjeter.

to go out and come in before them, to lead them out and bring them in, so that the congregation of the LORD will not be like sheep without a shepherd.

Herren sa til Moses: Ta Josva, Nuns sønn, en mann i hvem det er ånd, og legg din hånd på ham.

The LORD said to Moses, "Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit, and lay your hand on him.

Still ham fremfor presten Eleasar og hele menigheten, og gi ham befaling for deres øyne.

Set him before Eleazar the priest and the entire assembly, and commission him in their sight.

Gi ham noe av din ære, så hele Israels barns menighet vil høre på ham.

Transfer some of your authority to him so that the whole assembly of the Israelites will follow him.

La ham stå foran presten Eleasar, som skal spørre for ham ved hjelp av Urims dom for Herren. Ved hans ord skal de dra ut og komme inn, han og alle Israels barn med ham, hele menigheten.

He is to stand before Eleazar the priest, who will inquire for him by the decision of the Urim before the LORD. At his command they will go out, and at his command they will come in, both he and all the Israelites with him, the entire assembly.

Moses gjorde som Herren befalte ham. Han tok Josva og stilte ham fremfor presten Eleasar og hele menigheten,

Moses did as the LORD commanded. He took Joshua, set him before Eleazar the priest and the entire assembly,

la sine hender på ham og ga ham befaling, slik Herren hadde talt gjennom Moses.

laid his hands on him, and commissioned him, as the LORD directed through Moses.
