1 Kong David var nå gammel og opp i årene, og de dekket ham med klær, men han ble ikke varm.

Now king David was old and stricken in years; and they covered him with clothes, but he gat no heat.

2 Derfor sa tjenerne hans til ham: La oss finne en ung jomfru til min herre kongen, som kan være hos ham og pleie ham; hun kan ligge i din favn, så min herre kongen kan få varme.

Wherefore his servants said unto him, Let there be sought for my lord the king a young virgin: and let her stand before the king, and cherish him; and let her lie in thy bosom, that my lord the king may get heat.

3 De lette etter en vakker ung kvinne over hele Israels grenser og fant Abisjag fra Sunem, og de førte henne til kongen.

So they sought for a fair damsel throughout all the borders of Israel, and found Abishag the Shunammite, and brought her to the king.

4 Jenta var svært vakker, og hun pleide kongen og tjente ham; men kongen hadde ikke omgang med henne.

And the damsel was very fair; and she cherished the king, and ministered to him; but the king knew her not.

5 Da opphøyde Adonja, sønn av Haggit, seg selv og sa: Jeg vil bli konge. Og han skaffet seg vogner og ryttere, og femti menn som løp foran ham.

Then Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, I will be king: and he prepared him chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him.

6 Hans far hadde aldri irettesatt ham og sagt: Hvorfor har du gjort dette? Adonja var også en svært kjekk mann, og han var født etter Absalom.

And his father had not displeased him at any time in saying, Why hast thou done so? and he was also a very goodly man; and he was born after Absalom.

7 Han rådførte seg med Joab, Seraus sønn, og med presten Abjatar, og de fulgte Adonja og hjalp ham.

And he conferred with Joab the son of Zeruiah, and with Abiathar the priest: and they following Adonijah helped him.

8 Men presten Sadok, Benaja, Jehojadas sønn, profeten Natan, Sjimi, Rei og de modige menn som tilhørte David, var ikke med Adonja.

But Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and Nathan the prophet, and Shimei, and Rei, and the mighty men that belonged to David, were not with Adonijah.

9 Adonja ofret sauer, okser og fete kalver ved steinen Sohelet, ved siden av En-Rogel. Han kalte alle sine brødre, kongens sønner, og alle mennene i Juda, kongens tjenere.

And Adonijah slew sheep and oxen and fatlings by the stone of Zoheleth, which is beside En-rogel; and he called all his brethren, the king's sons, and all the men of Judah, the king's servants:

10 Men profeten Natan, Benaja, de modige mennene og hans bror Salomo kalte han ikke.

but Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah, and the mighty men, and Solomon his brother, he called not.

11 Da sa Natan til Batseba, Salomos mor: Har du ikke hørt at Adonja, Haggits sønn, har gjort seg til konge, og vår herre David vet det ikke?

Then Nathan spake unto Bath-sheba the mother of Solomon, saying, Hast thou not heard that Adonijah the son of Haggith doth reign, and David our lord knoweth it not?

12 Kom nå, la meg gi deg råd, så du kan redde ditt eget liv og livet til din sønn Salomo.

Now therefore come, let me, I pray thee, give thee counsel, that thou mayest save thine own life, and the life of thy son Solomon.

13 Gå inn til kong David og si: Har ikke du, min herre konge, sverget ved Herren din Gud til din tjenerinne, at Salomo, din sønn, skal bli konge etter meg og sitte på min trone? Hvorfor har da Adonja blitt konge?

Go and get thee in unto king David, and say unto him, Didst not thou, my lord, O king, swear unto thy handmaid, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne? why then doth Adonijah reign?

14 Mens du enda taler der med kongen, skal jeg komme etter deg og stadfeste dine ord.

Behold, while thou yet talkest there with the king, I also will come in after thee, and confirm thy words.

15 Batseba gikk da inn til kongen i kammerset. Kongen var svært gammel, og Abisjag fra Sunem tjente ham.

And Bath-sheba went in unto the king into the chamber: and the king was very old; and Abishag the Shunammite was ministering unto the king.

16 Batseba bøyde seg og falt på kne for kongen. Og kongen sa: Hva vil du?

And Bath-sheba bowed, and did obeisance unto the king. And the king said, What wouldest thou?

17 Hun svarte: Min herre, du sverget ved Herren din Gud til din tjenerinne: Salomo, din sønn, skal være konge etter meg, og han skal sitte på min trone.

And she said unto him, My lord, thou swarest by Jehovah thy God unto thy handmaid, `saying', Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne.

18 Men nå har Adonja blitt konge, og du, min herre kongen, vet det ikke.

And now, behold, Adonijah reigneth; and thou, my lord the king, knowest it not:

19 Han har ofret okser, fete kalver og sauer i mengde, og han har kalt alle kongens sønner, presten Abjatar og hærføreren Joab; men din tjener Salomo har han ikke kalt.

and he hath slain oxen and fatlings and sheep in abundance, and hath called all the sons of the king, and Abiathar the priest, and Joab the captain of the host; but Solomon thy servant hath he not called.

20 Og nå, min herre konge, alle Israels øyne er vendt mot deg, at du skal fortelle dem hvem som skal sitte på min herre kongens trone etter ham.

And thou, my lord the king, the eyes of all Israel are upon thee, that thou shouldest tell them who shall sit on the throne of my lord the king after him.

21 Ellers vil det skje, når min herre kongen skal legge seg til hvile med sine fedre, at både jeg og min sønn Salomo vil bli regnet som overtredere.

Otherwise it will come to pass, when my lord the king shall sleep with his fathers, that I and my son Solomon shall be counted offenders.

22 Mens hun ennå talte med kongen, kom profeten Natan.

And, lo, while she yet talked with the king, Nathan the prophet came in.

23 De fortalte kongen og sa: Se, her er profeten Natan. Da han kom inn for kongen, bøyde han seg for kongen med ansiktet mot jorden.

And they told the king, saying, Behold, Nathan the prophet. And when he was come in before the king, he bowed himself before the king with his face to the ground.

24 Natan sa: Min herre konge, har du sagt at Adonja skal bli konge etter meg og sitte på min trone?

And Nathan said, My lord, O king, hast thou said, Adonijah shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne?

25 For i dag har han gått ned og ofret okser, fete kalver og sauer i mengde. Han har kalt alle kongens sønner, hærførerne og presten Abjatar; og de spiser og drikker med ham og roper: Leve kong Adonja!

For he is gone down this day, and hath slain oxen and fatlings and sheep in abundance, and hath called all the king's sons, and the captains of the host, and Abiathar the priest; and, behold, they are eating and drinking before him, and say, `Long' live king Adonijah.

26 Men meg, din tjener, og presten Sadok og Benaja, Jehojadas sønn, og din tjener Salomo har han ikke kalt.

But me, even me thy servant, and Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and thy servant Solomon, hath he not called.

27 Er dette gjort av min herre kongen, uten at du har fortalt dine tjenere hvem som skal sitte på tronen til min herre kongen etter ham?

Is this thing done by my lord the king, and thou hast not showed unto thy servants who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him?

28 Da svarte kong David: Kall til meg Batseba! Hun kom inn for kongen og sto foran ham.

Then king David answered and said, Call to me Bath-sheba. And she came into the king's presence, and stood before the king.

29 Kongen sverget og sa: Så sant Herren lever, som har løst meg ut av all nød,

And the king sware, and said, As Jehovah liveth, who hath redeemed my soul out of all adversity,

30 liksom jeg sverget til deg ved Herren, Israels Gud, at Salomo, din sønn, skal bli konge etter meg og sitte på min trone i mitt sted, slik vil jeg gjøre i dag.

verily as I sware unto thee by Jehovah, the God of Israel, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne in my stead; verily so will I do this day.

31 Da bøyde Batseba seg med ansiktet mot jorden og tilba kongen, og sa: Må min herre kong David leve evig!

Then Bath-sheba bowed with her face to the earth, and did obeisance to the king, and said, Let my lord king David live for ever.

32 Kongen sa: Kall til meg presten Sadok, profeten Natan og Benaja, Jehojadas sønn. Og de kom inn for kongen.

And king David said, Call to me Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada. And they came before the king.

33 Kongen sa til dem: Ta med dere min herres tjenere, og la Salomo, min sønn, ride på mitt muldyr og føre ham ned til Gihon.

And the king said unto them, Take with you the servants of your lord, and cause Solomon my son to ride upon mine own mule, and bring him down to Gihon:

34 La presten Sadok og profeten Natan salve ham til konge over Israel der. Blås i trompeten og si: Leve kong Salomo!

and let Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him there king over Israel; and blow ye the trumpet, and say, `Long' live king Solomon.

35 Så skal dere følge etter ham, og han skal komme og sitte på min trone; for han skal være konge i mitt sted, og jeg har utpekt ham til å være fyrste over Israel og over Juda.

Then ye shall come up after him, and he shall come and sit upon my throne; for he shall be king in my stead; and I have appointed him to be prince over Israel and over Judah.

36 Benaja, Jehojadas sønn, svarte kongen og sa: Amen! Må Herren, min herres Gud, si det samme!

And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada answered the king, and said, Amen: Jehovah, the God of my lord the king, say so `too'.

37 Slik som Herren har vært med min herre kongen, må Han også være med Salomo, og gjøre hans trone større enn tronen til min herre kong David.

As Jehovah hath been with my lord the king, even so be he with Solomon, and make his throne greater than the throne of my lord king David.

38 Da gikk presten Sadok, profeten Natan, Benaja, Jehojadas sønn, og keretittene og peletittene ned, og lot Salomo ride på kong Davids muldyr og førte ham til Gihon.

So Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites and the Pelethites, went down, and caused Solomon to ride upon king David's mule, and brought him to Gihon.

39 Presten Sadok tok oljehornet fra teltet og salvet Salomo. De blåste i trompeten, og hele folket ropte: Leve kong Salomo!

And Zadok the priest took the horn of oil out of the Tent, and anointed Solomon. And they blew the trumpet; and all the people said, `Long' live king Solomon.

40 Hele folket gikk opp etter ham, og folket spilte på fløyter og jublet høyt, så jorden revnet ved lyden av dem.

And all the people came up after him, and the people piped with pipes, and rejoiced with great joy, so that the earth rent with the sound of them.

41 Adonja og alle gjestene hos ham hørte det da de var ferdige med å spise. Da Joab hørte lyden av trompeten, spurte han: Hvorfor er det begynt slik røre i byen?

And Adonijah and all the guests that were with him heard it as they had made an end of eating. And when Joab heard the sound of the trumpet, he said, Wherefore is this noise of the city being in an uproar?

42 Mens han ennå talte, kom Jonatan, sønn av presten Abjatar. Adonja sa: Kom inn, for du er en hederlig mann og bringer gode nyheter.

While he yet spake, behold, Jonathan the son of Abiathar the priest came: and Adonijah said, Come in; for thou art a worthy man, and bringest good tidings.

43 Jonatan svarte Adonja: Nei, vår herre kong David har gjort Salomo til konge.

And Jonathan answered and said to Adonijah, Verily our lord king David hath made Solomon king:

44 Kongen har sendt med ham presten Sadok, profeten Natan, Benaja, Jehojadas sønn, og keretittene og peletittene, og de har latt ham ri på kongens muldyr.

and the king hath sent with him Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and they have caused him to ride upon the king's mule;

45 Presten Sadok og profeten Natan har salvet ham til konge ved Gihon, og de har gått opp derfra med jubel, så byen syder. Det er den lyden du har hørt.

and Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king in Gihon; and they are come up from thence rejoicing, so that the city rang again. This is the noise that ye have heard.

46 Også sitter Salomo på rikets trone.

And also Solomon sitteth on the throne of the kingdom.

47 Dessuten kom kongens tjenere for å velsigne vår herre kong David og sa: Må Gud gjøre Salomos navn større enn ditt navn, og gjøre hans trone større enn din trone. Da bøyde kongen seg på sengen.

And moreover the king's servants came to bless our lord king David, saying, Thy God make the name of Solomon better than thy name, and make his throne greater than thy throne: and the king bowed himself upon the bed.

48 Kongen sa også: Lovet være Herren, Israels Gud, som i dag har gitt meg en etterfølger på tronen, mens mine øyne ser det.

And also thus said the king, Blessed be Jehovah, the God of Israel, who hath given one to sit on my throne this day, mine eyes even seeing it.

49 Alle Adonjas gjester ble redde, reiste seg og gikk hver sin vei.

And all the guests of Adonijah were afraid, and rose up, and went every man his way.

50 Adonja fryktet Salomo, og han reiste seg og grep tak i alterets horn.

And Adonijah feared because of Solomon; and he arose, and went, and caught hold on the horns of the altar.

51 Da ble det fortalt Salomo: Adonja frykter kong Salomo, for han har grepet fast i alterets horn og sier: Må kong Salomo først sverge at han ikke vil drepe sin tjener med sverdet.

And it was told Solomon, saying, Behold, Adonijah feareth king Solomon; for, lo, he hath laid hold on the horns of the altar, saying, Let king Solomon swear unto me first that he will not slay his servant with the sword.

52 Salomo sa: Hvis han viser seg å være en rettskaffen mann, skal ikke et hårstrå falle til jorden; men hvis det finnes ondskap i ham, skal han dø.

And Solomon said, If he shall show himself a worthy man, there shall not a hair of him fall to the earth; but if wickedness be found in him, he shall die.

53 Så sendte kong Salomo noen for å føre ham ned fra alteret. Han kom og bøyde seg for kong Salomo, og Salomo sa til ham: Gå til ditt hus.

So king Solomon sent, and they brought him down from the altar. And he came and did obeisance to king Solomon; and Solomon said unto him, Go to thy house.
