1 Og se, det kom en Guds mann fra Juda etter Herrens ord til Betel. Jeroboam stod ved alteret for å brenne røkelse.

And, behold, there came a man of God out of Judah by the word of Jehovah unto Beth-el: and Jeroboam was standing by the altar to burn incense.

2 Og han ropte mot alteret etter Herrens ord og sa: Alter, alter! Så sier Herren: Se, en sønn skal fødes til Davids hus, ved navn Josjia. På deg skal han ofre prestene fra de høye stedene som brenner røkelse på deg, og på deg skal de brenne menneskebein.

And he cried against the altar by the word of Jehovah, and said, O altar, altar, thus saith Jehovah: Behold, a son shall be born unto the house of David, Josiah by name; and upon thee shall he sacrifice the priests of the high places that burn incense upon thee, and men's bones shall they burn upon thee.

3 Og han ga et tegn samme dag og sa: Dette er tegnet som Herren har talt: Se, alteret skal revne, og asken som er på det skal tømmes ut.

And he gave a sign the same day, saying, This is the sign which Jehovah hath spoken: Behold, the altar shall be rent, and the ashes that are upon it shall be poured out.

4 Da kongen hørte hva Guds mann sa mot alteret i Betel, rakte Jeroboam ut hånden fra alteret og sa: Grip ham! Men hånden han rakte ut mot ham, tørket ut, så han ikke kunne trekke den tilbake til seg.

And it came to pass, when the king heard the saying of the man of God, which he cried against the altar in Beth-el, that Jeroboam put forth his hand from the altar, saying, Lay hold on him. And his hand, which he put forth against him, dried up, so that he could not draw it back again to him.

5 Alteret revnet også, og asken ble tømt ut fra alteret, i samsvar med tegnet den Guds mann hadde gitt etter Herrens ord.

The altar also was rent, and the ashes poured out from the altar, according to the sign which the man of God had given by the word of Jehovah.

6 Kongen svarte og sa til Guds mann: Be om velvilje fra Herren din Gud og be for meg, så hånden min kan bli helbredet igjen. Da ba Guds mannen til Herren, og kongens hånd ble helbredet og ble som før.

And the king answered and said unto the man of God, Entreat now the favor of Jehovah thy God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored me again. And the man of God entreated Jehovah, and the king's hand was restored him again, and became as it was before.

7 Kongen sa til Guds mannen: Kom hjem med meg og ta deg noe å spise, så skal jeg belønne deg.

And the king said unto the man of God, Come home with me, and refresh thyself, and I will give thee a reward.

8 Men Guds mannen sa til kongen: Om du gir meg halvparten av huset ditt, vil jeg ikke gå med deg, og jeg vil heller ikke spise brød eller drikke vann på dette stedet;

And the man of God said unto the king, If thou wilt give me half thy house, I will not go in with thee, neither will I eat bread nor drink water in this place;

9 for så er det blitt meg befalt ved Herrens ord: Du skal ikke spise brød eller drikke vann, og ikke vende tilbake samme veien som du kom.

for so was it charged me by the word of Jehovah, saying, Thou shalt eat no bread, nor drink water, neither return by the way that thou camest.

10 Så gikk han en annen vei og vendte ikke tilbake samme veien som han kom til Betel.

So he went another way, and returned not by the way that he came to Beth-el.

11 Nå bodde det en gammel profet i Betel. En av hans sønner kom og fortalte ham alt det den Guds mann hadde gjort den dagen i Betel. Han fortalte også hvilke ord han hadde sagt til kongen.

Now there dwelt an old prophet in Beth-el; and one of his sons came and told him all the works that the man of God had done that day in Beth-el: the words which he had spoken unto the king, them also they told unto their father.

12 Deres far spurte dem: Hvilken vei dro han? Sønnene hadde sett hvilken vei den Guds mann fra Juda gikk.

And their father said unto them, What way went he? Now his sons had seen what way the man of God went, that came from Judah.

13 Han sa til sønnene sine: Sal meg eselet. Så salte de eselet for ham, og han red av sted.

And he said unto his sons, Saddle me the ass. So they saddled him the ass; and he rode thereon.

14 Han dro etter den Guds mannen og fant ham sittende under en eik. Han spurte ham: Er du den Guds mann som kom fra Juda? Og han svarte: Ja, det er jeg.

And he went after the man of God, and found him sitting under an oak; and he said unto him, Art thou the man of God that camest from Judah? And he said, I am.

15 Da sa han til ham: Kom hjem med meg og spis brød.

Then he said unto him, Come home with me, and eat bread.

16 Men han svarte: Jeg kan ikke vende tilbake med deg, eller gå med deg. Jeg vil ikke spise brød eller drikke vann med deg på dette sted;

And he said, I may not return with thee, nor go in with thee; neither will I eat bread nor drink water with thee in this place:

17 for etter Herrens ord ble det sagt til meg: Du skal ikke spise brød eller drikke vann der, og ikke vende tilbake samme veien som du kom.

for it was said to me by the word of Jehovah, Thou shalt eat no bread nor drink water there, nor turn again to go by the way that thou camest.

18 Da sa han til ham: Jeg er også en profet som du, og en engel sa til meg ved Herrens ord: Ta ham med deg tilbake til ditt hus, så han kan spise brød og drikke vann. Men han løy for ham.

And he said unto him, I also am a prophet as thou art; and an angel spake unto me by the word of Jehovah, saying, Bring him back with thee into thy house, that he may eat bread and drink water. `But' he lied unto him.

19 Så vendte han tilbake med ham, spiste brød i hans hus og drakk vann.

So he went back with him, and did eat bread in his house, and drank water.

20 Og mens de satt ved bordet, kom Herrens ord til profeten som hadde tatt ham med tilbake.

And it came to pass, as they sat at the table, that the word of Jehovah came unto the prophet that brought him back;

21 Og han ropte til den Guds mannen som kom fra Juda og sa: Så sier Herren: Fordi du var ulydig mot Herrens ord og ikke holdt det bud Herren din Gud gav deg,

and he cried unto the man of God that came from Judah, saying, Thus saith Jehovah, Forasmuch as thou hast been disobedient unto the mouth of Jehovah, and hast not kept the commandment which Jehovah thy God commanded thee,

22 men vendte tilbake og spiste brød og drakk vann på stedet hvor han sa til deg, Spis ikke brød, og drikk ikke vann, skal ikke ditt legeme komme til dine forfedres grav.

but camest back, and hast eaten bread and drunk water in the place of which he said to thee, Eat no bread, and drink no water; thy body shall not come unto the sepulchre of thy fathers.

23 Og det skjedde, etter at han hadde spist brød og drukket, da salte han eselet for profeten som han hadde tatt med tilbake.

And it came to pass, after he had eaten bread, and after he had drunk, that he saddled for him the ass, `to wit', for the prophet whom he had brought back.

24 Da han gikk sin vei, møtte en løve ham på veien og drepte ham. Og hans legeme lå kastet på veien, med eselet ved siden av det, og løven stod også ved legemet.

And when he was gone, a lion met him by the way, and slew him: and his body was cast in the way, and the ass stood by it; the lion also stood by the body.

25 Og se, menn kom forbi og så legemet ligge på veien, og løven stå ved legemet. De kom og fortalte det i byen hvor den gamle profeten bodde.

And, behold, men passed by, and saw the body cast in the way, and the lion standing by the body; and they came and told it in the city where the old prophet dwelt.

26 Da profeten som hadde tatt ham med tilbake fra veien, hørte det, sa han: Det er Guds mannen som var ulydig mot Herrens ord. Derfor har Herren gitt ham til løven, som har revet ham i stykker og drept ham, i samsvar med Herrens ord som han talte til ham.

And when the prophet that brought him back from the way heard thereof, he said, It is the man of God, who was disobedient unto the mouth of Jehovah: therefore Jehovah hath delivered him unto the lion, which hath torn him, and slain him, according to the word of Jehovah, which he spake unto him.

27 Så sa han til sønnene sine: Sal meg eselet! Og de salte det.

And he spake to his sons, saying, Saddle me the ass. And they saddled it.

28 Så gikk han og fant hans legeme som lå kastet på veien, og eselet og løven som stod ved legemet. Løven hadde verken spist legemet eller revet eselet i stykker.

And he went and found his body cast in the way, and the ass and the lion standing by the body: the lion had not eaten the body, nor torn the ass.

29 Da tok profeten opp legemet til Guds mannen og la det på eselet, og han førte det tilbake. Han kom til den gamle profetens by for å sørge over ham og begrave ham.

And the prophet took up the body of the man of God, and laid it upon the ass, and brought it back; and he came to the city of the old prophet, to mourn, and to bury him.

30 Han la hans legeme i sin egen grav, og de sørget over ham og sa: Å, min bror!

And he laid his body in his own grave; and they mourned over him, `saying', Alas, my brother!

31 Etter at han hadde begravet ham, sa han til sønnene sine: Når jeg dør, skal dere begrave meg i samme grav som Guds mannen er begravet; legg mine bein ved siden av hans bein.

And it came to pass, after he had buried him, that he spake to his sons, saying, When I am dead, then bury me in the sepulchre wherein the man of God is buried; lay my bones beside his bones.

32 For det ord han ropte etter Herrens ord mot alteret i Betel, og mot alle husene til de høye stedene som er i byene i Samaria, skal gå i oppfyllelse.

For the saying which he cried by the word of Jehovah against the altar in Beth-el, and against all the houses of the high places which are in the cities of Samaria, shall surely come to pass.

33 Etter dette vendte Jeroboam ikke om fra sin onde vei, men laget igjen prester av de høye steder fra hele folket. De som ønsket det, innviet han til prester for de høye stedene.

After this thing Jeroboam returned not from his evil way, but made again from among all the people priests of the high places: whosoever would, he consecrated him, that there might be priests of the high places.

34 Og denne handling ble en synd for Jeroboams hus, så det skulle bli utryddet og tilintetgjort fra jorden.

And this thing became sin unto the house of Jeroboam, even to cut it off, and to destroy it from off the face of the earth.
