1 Og Samuel sa til Saul: Herren sendte meg for å salve deg til konge over sitt folk, over Israel. Hør nå derfor på Herrens ord.

And Samuel said unto Saul, Jehovah sent me to anoint thee to be king over his people, over Israel: now therefore hearken thou unto the voice of the words of Jehovah.

2 Så sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud: Jeg husker hva Amalek gjorde mot Israel, hvordan han satte seg imot ham på veien da han dro opp fra Egypt.

Thus saith Jehovah of hosts, I have marked that which Amalek did to Israel, how he set himself against him in the way, when he came up out of Egypt.

3 Gå nå og slå Amalek, og utrydd alt de har. Spar dem ikke, men drep både mann og kvinne, spedbarn og diebarn, okse og sau, kamel og esel.

Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.

4 Og Saul kalte sammen folket og talte dem i Telaim, to hundre tusen fotsoldater og ti tusen menn fra Juda.

And Saul summoned the people, and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand footmen, and ten thousand men of Judah.

5 Saul kom til Amaleks by og la bakhold i dalen.

And Saul came to the city of Amalek, and laid wait in the valley.

6 Og Saul sa til kenittene: Gå bort, dra ned fra amalekittene, for at jeg ikke skal ødelegge dere sammen med dem; for dere viste godhet mot alle Israels barn da de dro opp fra Egypt. Så trakk kenittene seg bort fra amalekittene.

And Saul said unto the Kenites, Go, depart, get you down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them; for ye showed kindness to all the children of Israel, when they came up out of Egypt. So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites.

7 Og Saul slo amalekittene fra Havilah helt til du kommer til Shur, som ligger øst for Egypt.

And Saul smote the Amalekites, from Havilah as thou goest to Shur, that is before Egypt.

8 Og han tok Agag, amalekittenes konge, levende, men folket utryddet han ved sverdet.

And he took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword.

9 Men Saul og folket sparte Agag, og det beste av sauene og oksene, de fete dyrene og lammene, alt som var godt, og ville ikke utrydde dem fullstendig. Men alt som var uverdig og foraktet, det ødela de fullstendig.

But Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, and of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them: but everything that was vile and refuse, that they destroyed utterly.

10 Så kom Herrens ord til Samuel:

Then came the word of Jehovah unto Samuel, saying,

11 Jeg angrer at jeg har gjort Saul til konge, for han har vendt seg bort fra meg og har ikke fulgt mine befalinger. Samuel ble vred og ropte til Herren hele natten.

It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king; for he is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my commandments. And Samuel was wroth; and he cried unto Jehovah all night.

12 Tidlig neste morgen reiste Samuel seg for å møte Saul; og det ble sagt til Samuel: Saul kom til Karmel, og se, han satte opp et monument for seg selv, vendte seg og dro ned til Gilgal.

And Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning; and it was told Samuel, saying, Saul came to Carmel, and, behold, he set him up a monument, and turned, and passed on, and went down to Gilgal.

13 Da Samuel kom til Saul, sa Saul til ham: Herren velsigne deg! Jeg har utført Herrens befaling.

And Samuel came to Saul; and Saul said unto him, Blessed be thou of Jehovah: I have performed the commandment of Jehovah.

14 Men Samuel sa: Hva er da denne brekingen av sauer jeg hører, og rautingen av storfe som når mine ører?

And Samuel said, What meaneth then this bleating of the sheep in mine ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear?

15 Saul svarte: De har ført dem fra amalekittene; for folket sparte det beste av sauene og oksene for å ofre til Herren din Gud, men resten har vi utryddet.

And Saul said, They have brought them from the Amalekites: for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen, to sacrifice unto Jehovah thy God; and the rest we have utterly destroyed.

16 Da sa Samuel til Saul: Vent, så skal jeg fortelle deg hva Herren sa til meg i natt. Og han svarte ham: Si det.

Then Samuel said unto Saul, Stay, and I will tell thee what Jehovah hath said to me this night. And he said unto him, Say on.

17 Samuel sa: Da du var liten i egne øyne, ble du ikke gjort til overhode over Israels stammer? Og Herren salvet deg til konge over Israel.

And Samuel said, Though thou wast little in thine own sight, wast thou not made the head of the tribes of Israel? And Jehovah anointed thee king over Israel;

18 Herren sendte deg på en ferd og sa: Gå og utrydd de syndige amalekittene, og kjemp mot dem til de er utslettet.

and Jehovah sent thee on a journey, and said, Go, and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites, and fight against them until they be consumed.

19 Hvorfor adlød du da ikke Herrens røst, men kastet deg over byttet og gjorde det som var ondt i Herrens øyne?

Wherefore then didst thou not obey the voice of Jehovah, but didst fly upon the spoil, and didst that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah?

20 Saul sa til Samuel: Jeg har adlydt Herrens røst og gått den veien Herren sendte meg. Jeg har brakt Agag, amalekittenes konge, hit, men amalekittene har jeg utryddet.

And Saul said unto Samuel, Yea, I have obeyed the voice of Jehovah, and have gone the way which Jehovah sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites.

21 Men folket tok av byttet, sauer og okser, den beste delen av det ødelagte, for å ofre til Herren din Gud i Gilgal.

But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the chief of the devoted things, to sacrifice unto Jehovah thy God in Gilgal.

22 Da sa Samuel: Har Herren mer glede i brennoffer og slaktoffer enn i å høre på Herrens røst? Å høre er bedre enn offer, å lyde enn fett av værer.

And Samuel said, Hath Jehovah as great delight in burnt-offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of Jehovah? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.

23 For gjenstridig oppførsel er som trolldom og trassighet som avgudsdyrkelse. Fordi du har forkastet Herrens ord, har han også forkastet deg som konge.

For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as idolatry and teraphim. Because thou hast rejected the word of Jehovah, he hath also rejected thee from being king.

24 Da sa Saul til Samuel: Jeg har syndet, for jeg har brutt Herrens bud og dine ord, for jeg fryktet folket og adlød deres stemme.

And Saul said unto Samuel, I have sinned; for I have transgressed the commandment of Jehovah, and thy words, because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice.

25 Jeg ber deg nå, tilgi min synd og vend tilbake med meg, så jeg kan tilbe Herren.

Now therefore, I pray thee, pardon my sin, and turn again with me, that I may worship Jehovah.

26 Men Samuel sa til Saul: Jeg vil ikke gå tilbake med deg, for du har forkastet Herrens ord, og Herren har forkastet deg som konge over Israel.

And Samuel said unto Saul, I will not return with thee; for thou hast rejected the word of Jehovah, and Jehovah hath rejected thee from being king over Israel.

27 Da Samuel vendte seg for å gå, tok Saul tak i fliken av kappens hans, og den revnet.

And as Samuel turned about to go away, `Saul' laid hold upon the skirt of his robe, and it rent.

28 Da sa Samuel til ham: Herren har revet kongedømmet fra deg i dag, og har gitt det til en av dine naboer som er bedre enn deg.

And Samuel said unto him, Jehovah hath rent the kingdom of Israel from thee this day, and hath given it to a neighbor of thine, that is better than thou.

29 Og Israels styrke lyver ikke heller anger, for han er ikke et menneske, så han skulle angre.

And also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent; for he is not a man, that he should repent.

30 Da sa han: Jeg har syndet, men gi meg nå ære foran mitt folks eldste og foran Israel. Vend tilbake med meg, så jeg kan tilbe Herren din Gud.

Then he said, I have sinned: yet honor me now, I pray thee, before the elders of my people, and before Israel, and turn again with me, that I may worship Jehovah thy God.

31 Så vendte Samuel tilbake etter Saul, og Saul tilba Herren.

So Samuel turned again after Saul; and Saul worshipped Jehovah.

32 Da sa Samuel: Før Agag, amalekittenes konge, hit til meg. Agag kom til ham glad og sa: Sannelig, dødens bitterhet er over.

Then said Samuel, Bring ye hither to me Agag the king of the Amalekites. And Agag came unto him cheerfully. And Agag said, Surely the bitterness of death is past.

33 Samuel sa: Som ditt sverd har gjort kvinner barnløse, skal din mor bli barnløs blant kvinner. Så hogg Samuel Agag i stykker for Herrens ansikt i Gilgal.

And Samuel said, As thy sword hath made women childless, so shall thy mother be childless among women. And Samuel hewed Agag in pieces before Jehovah in Gilgal.

34 Så dro Samuel til Rama, og Saul dro opp til sitt hus i Sauls Gibea.

Then Samuel went to Ramah; and Saul went up to his house to Gibeah of Saul.

35 Samuel så aldri Saul mer til dagen han døde, men Samuel sørget over Saul. Og Herren angret at han hadde gjort Saul til konge over Israel.

And Samuel came no more to see Saul until the day of his death; for Samuel mourned for Saul: and Jehovah repented that he had made Saul king over Israel.
