1 Saul snakket med Jonathan, sin sønn, og med alle tjenerne sine, om at de skulle drepe David. Men Jonathan, Sauls sønn, var svært glad i David.

And Saul spake to Jonathan his son, and to all his servants, that they should slay David. But Jonathan, Saul's son, delighted much in David.

2 Jonathan fortalte David: "Saul, min far, prøver å drepe deg. Så vær forsiktig i morgen, finn deg et hemmelig sted og gjem deg.

And Jonathan told David, saying, Saul my father seeketh to slay thee: now therefore, I pray thee, take heed to thyself in the morning, and abide in a secret place, and hide thyself:

3 Jeg skal gå ut og stå ved siden av faren min på marken der du er. Jeg vil snakke med ham om deg, og hvis jeg får høre noe, skal jeg fortelle deg det."

and I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where thou art, and I will commune with my father of thee; and if I see aught, I will tell thee.

4 Jonathan talte godt om David til sin far Saul og sa: "La ikke kongen synde mot sin tjener David, for han har ikke syndet mot deg. Det han har gjort, har vært til stor nytte for deg.

And Jonathan spake good of David unto Saul his father, and said unto him, Let not the king sin against his servant, against David; because he hath not sinned against thee, and because his works have been to thee-ward very good:

5 Han risikerte livet sitt og slo filisteren, og Herren gav Israel en stor seier. Du så det, og du gledet deg. Hvorfor vil du da synde ved å utgyte uskyldig blod og drepe David uten grunn?"

for he put his life in his hand, and smote the Philistine, and Jehovah wrought a great victory for all Israel: thou sawest it, and didst rejoice; wherefore then wilt thou sin against innocent blood, to slay David without a cause?

6 Saul lyttet til Jonathans ord og sverget: "Så sant Herren lever, han skal ikke drepes."

And Saul hearkened unto the voice of Jonathan: and Saul sware, As Jehovah liveth, he shall not be put to death.

7 Jonathan kalte på David og fortalte ham alt dette. Så førte Jonathan David til Saul, og han var i hans nærhet som før.

And Jonathan called David, and Jonathan showed him all those things. And Jonathan brought David to Saul, and he was in his presence, as beforetime.

8 Det ble igjen krig, og David dro ut og kjempet mot filisterne. Han felte dem med et stort nederlag, og de flyktet for ham.

And there was war again: and David went out, and fought with the Philistines, and slew them with a great slaughter; and they fled before him.

9 Den onde ånden fra Herren kom over Saul mens han satt i huset sitt med spydet i hånden, og David spilte på lyren.

And an evil spirit from Jehovah was upon Saul, as he sat in his house with his spear in his hand; and David was playing with his hand.

10 Saul prøvde å spidde David til veggen med spydet, men David unngikk Sauls angrep, og spydet gikk i veggen. David flyktet, og slapp unna den natten.

And Saul sought to smite David even to the wall with the spear; but he slipped away out of Saul's presence, and he smote the spear into the wall: and David fled, and escaped that night.

11 Saul sendte folk til Davids hus for å vokte ham og drepe ham om morgenen. Men Mikal, Davids kone, advarte ham: "Hvis du ikke redder livet ditt i natt, vil du bli drept i morgen."

And Saul sent messengers unto David's house, to watch him, and to slay him in the morning: and Michal, David's wife, told him, saying, If thou save not thy life to-night, to-morrow thou wilt be slain.

12 Mikal hjalp David ned gjennom et vindu, og han flyktet og slapp unna.

So Michal let David down through the window: and he went, and fled, and escaped.

13 Mikal tok støttebildet, la det i sengen og la en pute av geitehår ved hodet på det og dekket det til med tøy.

And Michal took the teraphim, and laid it in the bed, and put a pillow of goats' `hair' at the head thereof, and covered it with the clothes.

14 Da Saul sendte folk for å hente David, sa hun: "Han er syk."

And when Saul sent messengers to take David, she said, He is sick.

15 Saul sendte dem likevel tilbake for å se David, og sa: "Bring ham hit til meg i sengen, så jeg kan drepe ham."

And Saul sent the messengers to see David, saying, Bring him up to me in the bed, that I may slay him.

16 Da folkene kom inn, så de at det var et støttebilde i sengen med en pute av geitehår ved hodet.

And when the messengers came in, behold, the teraphim was in the bed, with the pillow of goats' `hair' at the head thereof.

17 Saul sa til Mikal: "Hvorfor har du lurt meg sånn og latt fienden min slippe unna?" Mikal svarte: "Han sa til meg: 'La meg gå, ellers dreper jeg deg.'"

And Saul said unto Michal, Why hast thou deceived me thus, and let mine enemy go, so that he is escaped? And Michal answered Saul, He said unto me, Let me go; why should I kill thee?

18 David flyktet og kom seg unna, og han dro til Samuel i Rama og fortalte ham alt det Saul hadde gjort mot ham. Samuel og David dro og bodde i Naiot.

Now David fled, and escaped, and came to Samuel to Ramah, and told him all that Saul had done to him. And he and Samuel went and dwelt in Naioth.

19 Det ble meldt til Saul: "Se, David er i Naiot i Ramah."

And it was told Saul, saying, Behold, David is at Naioth in Ramah.

20 Saul sendte folk for å hente David. Da de så profetene som profeterte med Samuel som leder, kom Guds ånd over Sauls sendebud, og de profeterte også.

And Saul sent messengers to take David: and when they saw the company of the prophets prophesying, and Samuel standing as head over them, the Spirit of God came upon the messengers of Saul, and they also prophesied.

21 Da Saul fikk høre dette, sendte han andre menn, men de profeterte også. Og Saul sendte folk en tredje gang, og de profeterte også.

And when it was told Saul, he sent other messengers, and they also prophesied. And Saul sent messengers again the third time, and they also prophesied.

22 Da dro han selv til Rama og kom til den store brønnen i Seku. Han spurte: "Hvor er Samuel og David?" Noen svarte: "De er i Naiot i Ramah."

Then went he also to Ramah, and came to the great well that is in Secu: and he asked and said, Where are Samuel and David? And one said, Behold, they are at Naioth in Ramah.

23 Han dro dit, til Naiot i Ramah, og Guds ånd kom også over ham, og han gikk og profeterte helt til han kom til Naiot i Ramah.

And he went thither to Naioth in Ramah: and the Spirit of God came upon him also, and he went on, and prophesied, until he came to Naioth in Ramah.

24 Han kastet også av seg klærne, profeterte framfor Samuel og lå der naken hele den dagen og natten. Derfor sier man: "Er også Saul blant profetene?"

And he also stripped off his clothes, and he also prophesied before Samuel, and lay down naked all that day and all that night. Wherefore they say, Is Saul also among the prophets?
