1 Filisterne samlet alle sine styrker i Afek, mens israelittene hadde leir ved kilden i Jisreel.

Now the Philistines gathered together all their hosts to Aphek: and the Israelites encamped by the fountain which is in Jezreel.

2 Filisternes herrer marsjerte med hundre- og tusentall, og David og hans menn fulgte bak sammen med Akisj.

And the lords of the Philistines passed on by hundreds, and by thousands; and David and his men passed on in the rearward with Achish.

3 Da sa filisternes fyrster: Hva gjør disse hebreerne her? Akisj svarte fyrsterne av filisterne: Er ikke dette David, tjeneren til Saul, Israels konge, som har vært hos meg i mange dager, enda flere år? Og jeg har ikke funnet noen feil hos ham siden han kom til meg.

Then said the princes of the Philistines, What `do' these Hebrews `here'? And Achish said unto the princes of the Philistines, Is not this David, the servant of Saul the king of Israel, who hath been with me these days, or `rather' these years, and I have found no fault in him since he fell away `unto me' unto this day?

4 Men filisternes fyrster ble sinte på ham og sa: Send mannen tilbake, så han kan dra tilbake til det stedet du har gitt ham, og la ham ikke gå i krigen med oss; for i striden kan han kanskje bli vår fiende. Hvordan kan han ellers vinne sin herres gunst, om ikke med disse menns hoder?

But he princes of the Philistines were wroth with him; and the princes of the Philistines said unto him, Make the man return, that he may go back to his place where thou hast appointed him, and let him not go down with us to battle, lest in the battle he become an adversary to us: for wherewith should this `fellow' reconcile himself unto his lord? should it not be with the heads of these men?

5 Er ikke dette David, som de sang om i sine danser, og sa: Saul har slått sine tusener, og David sine titusener?

Is not this David, of whom they sang one to another in dances, saying, Saul hath slain his thousands, And David his ten thousands?

6 Da kalte Akisj David til seg og sa til ham: Så sant Herren lever, du har vært rettskaffen, og din opptreden med meg i hæren har vært god i mine øyne; for jeg har ikke funnet noe ondt hos deg fra dagen du kom til meg til denne dag, men filisternes herrer er ikke fornøyd med deg.

Then Achish called David, and said unto him, As Jehovah liveth, thou hast been upright, and thy going out and thy coming in with me in the host is good in my sight; for I have not found evil in thee since the day of thy coming unto me unto this day: nevertheless the lords favor thee not.

7 Derfor, vend tilbake og gå i fred, så du ikke misliker filisternes herrer.

Wherefore now return, and go in peace, that thou displease not the lords of the Philistines.

8 David sa til Akisj: Men hva har jeg gjort? Og hva har du funnet hos din tjener fra den dagen jeg kom til deg til denne dag, så jeg ikke kan gå og kjempe mot min herre kongens fiender?

And David said unto Achish, But what have I done? and what hast thou found in thy servant so long as I have been before thee unto this day, that I may not go and fight against the enemies of my lord the king?

9 Akisj svarte og sa til David: Jeg vet at du er like god i mine øyne som en Guds engel, men filisternes fyrster har sagt at han ikke skal gå opp med oss i krigen.

And Achish answered and said to David, I know that thou art good in my sight, as an angel of God: notwithstanding the princes of the Philistines have said, He shall not go up with us to the battle.

10 Så stå tidlig opp om morgenen med din herres tjenere som har kommet med deg; når dere står opp tidlig om morgenen og har lys, dra da av sted.

Wherefore now rise up early in the morning with the servants of thy lord that are come with thee; and as soon as ye are up early in the morning, and have light, depart.

11 Så tidlig om morgenen dro David og hans menn bort for å vende tilbake til filisternes land, mens filisterne dro opp til Jisreel.

So David rose up early, he and his men, to depart in the morning, to return into the land of the Philistines. And the Philistines went up to Jezreel.
