1 Da Samuel ble gammel, utnevnte han sønnene sine til dommere over Israel.

And it came to pass, when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel.

2 Hans førstefødte het Joel, og hans andre sønn het Abija; de var dommere i Beer-Sjeba.

Now the name of his first-born was Joel; and the name of his second, Abijah: they were judges in Beer-sheba.

3 Men sønnene hans fulgte ikke hans eksempel. De var ute etter urett vinning, tok imot bestikkelser og forvrengte retten.

And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted justice.

4 Da samlet alle de eldste i Israel seg og dro til Samuel i Rama;

Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah;

5 de sa til ham: Se, du er gammel, og sønnene dine følger ikke dine veier. Gi oss en konge til å dømme oss, slik som alle de andre folkeslagene har.

and they said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.

6 Men dette mislikte Samuel, da de sa: Gi oss en konge til å dømme oss. Så ba Samuel til Herren.

But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto Jehovah.

7 Og Herren sa til Samuel: Lytt til folkets stemme i alt de sier til deg, for de har ikke forkastet deg, men de har forkastet meg som konge over dem.

And Jehovah said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee; for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not be king over them.

8 Som de alltid har oppført seg fra den dagen jeg førte dem opp fra Egypt til denne dag, da de forlot meg og tjente andre guder, slik gjør de også mot deg.

According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day, in that they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also unto thee.

9 Nå skal du lytte til deres stemme, men advare dem strengere og fortelle dem hvordan den kongen som skal herske over dem, vil være.

Now therefore hearken unto their voice: howbeit thou shalt protest solemnly unto them, and shalt show them the manner of the king that shall reign over them.

10 Da sa Samuel alle Herrens ord til folket som hadde bedt ham om en konge.

And Samuel told all the words of Jehovah unto the people that asked of him a king.

11 Han sa: Slik vil den kongen være som skal herske over dere: Han vil ta sønnene deres og sette dem til sitt bruk, til å kjøre vognene hans og være ryttere; de skal løpe foran vognene hans.

And he said, This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: he will take your sons, and appoint them unto him, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and they shall run before his chariots;

12 Han vil sette dem til å være førere over tusen og førere over femti, til å pløye hans åkrer og høste hans avlinger, til å lage hans krigsvåpen og utstyret til vognene hans.

and he will appoint them unto him for captains of thousands, and captains of fifties; and `he will set some' to plow his ground, and to reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and the instruments of his chariots.

13 Han vil ta døtrene deres til å lage parfymer, til å koke og til å bake.

And he will take your daughters to be perfumers, and to be cooks, and to be bakers.

14 Han vil ta de beste åkrene, vingårdene og olivenlundene deres og gi dem til tjenerne sine.

And he will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your oliveyards, even the best of them, and give them to his servants.

15 Han vil ta tiende av kornet deres og vingårdene deres og gi til sine hoffmenn og tjenere.

And he will take the tenth of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give to his officers, and to his servants.

16 Han vil ta deres mannlige og kvinnelige tjenere, deres beste unge menn og deres esler, og bruke dem til sitt arbeid.

And he will take your men-servants, and your maid-servants, and your goodliest young men, and your asses, and put them to his work.

17 Han vil ta tiende av saueflokkene deres, og dere skal bli hans tjenere.

He will take the tenth of your flocks: and ye shall be his servants.

18 Den dagen skal dere rope på grunn av den kongen dere har valgt dere, men Herren vil ikke svare dere den dagen.

And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king whom ye shall have chosen you; and Jehovah will not answer you in that day.

19 Men folket nektet å lytte til Samuel og sa: Nei, vi vil ha en konge over oss,

But the people refused to hearken unto the voice of Samuel; and they said, Nay: but we will have a king over us,

20 slik at vi også kan være som alle andre folkeslag, at vår konge kan dømme oss, gå foran oss og føre våre kriger.

that we also may be like all the nations, and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles.

21 Samuel hørte alle folkets ord og fortalte dem til Herren.

And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he rehearsed them in the ears of Jehovah.

22 Og Herren sa til Samuel: Hør på deres stemme og innsett en konge for dem. Samuel sa da til Israels menn, Gå hjem hver til sin by.

And Jehovah said to Samuel, Hearken unto their voice, and make them a king. And Samuel said unto the men of Israel, Go ye every man unto his city.
