1 Paulus, Kristi Jesu apostel ved Guds vilje, og vår bror Timoteus, til Guds menighet som er i Korint, sammen med alle de hellige i hele Akaia:

Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus through the will of God, and Timothy our brother, unto the church of God which is at Corinth, with all the saints that are in the whole of Achaia:

2 Nåde være med dere og fred fra Gud vår Far og Herren Jesus Kristus.

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

3 Velsignet er Gud, vår Herre Jesu Kristi Far, barmhjertighetens Far og all trøsts Gud,

Blessed `be' the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort;

4 som trøster oss i all vår trengsel, så vi kan trøste dem som er i all slags trengsel, med den trøst vi selv får fra Gud.

who comforteth us in all our affliction, that we may be able to comfort them that are in any affliction, through the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.

5 For som Kristi lidelser kommer rikelig til oss, slik har vi også rikelig trøst gjennom Kristus.

For as the sufferings of Christ abound unto us, even so our comfort also aboundeth through Christ.

6 Om vi blir tynget av prøvelser, er det for deres trøst og frelse; om vi blir trøstet, er det for deres trøst, som gir tålmodighet til å tåle de samme lidelsene som vi også lider:

But whether we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation; or whether we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which worketh in the patient enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer:

7 Og vårt håp for dere er fast; fordi vi vet at som dere er deltakere i lidelsene, så også i trøsten.

and our hope for you is stedfast; knowing that, as ye are partakers of the sufferings, so also are ye of the comfort.

8 Vi vil nemlig ikke at dere skal være uvitende, brødre, om vår trengsel i Asia, hvordan vi ble så overveldet utover vår egen krefter, at vi mistet livsmotet:

For we would not have you ignorant, brethren, concerning our affliction which befell `us' in Asia, that we were weighed down exceedingly, beyond our power, insomuch that we despaired even of life:

9 Ja, vi hadde selv dødsdommen i oss, for at vi ikke skulle stole på oss selv, men på Gud som oppvekker de døde:

yea, we ourselves have had the sentence of death within ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God who raiseth the dead:

10 Han som fridde oss fra så stor en død, og fremdeles vil frie oss; vi har satt vårt håp til at han også i fremtiden vil frie oss;

who delivered us out of so great a death, and will deliver: on whom we have set our hope that he will also still deliver us;

11 Dere også hjelper sammen med oss ved deres bønner, så mange kan gi takk på våre vegne for gaven som er oss gitt gjennom mange.

ye also helping together on our behalf by your supplication; that, for the gift bestowed upon us by means of many, thanks may be given by many persons on our behalf.

12 For vår stolthet er denne: vårt samvittighets vitnesbyrd, at vi har oppført oss ærlig og oppriktig i verden, ikke med verdslig visdom, men i Guds nåde, og spesielt overfor dere.

For our glorifying is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in holiness and sincerity of God, not in fleshly wisdom but in the grace of God, we behaved ourselves in the world, and more abundantly to you-ward.

13 For vi skriver ikke noe annet til dere enn det dere leser eller erkjenner, og jeg håper at dere vil forstå fullt ut:

For we write no other things unto you, than what ye read or even acknowledge, and I hope ye will acknowledge unto the end:

14 slik som dere delvis allerede har erkjent oss, at vi er deres stolthet, som dere også er vår, på vår Herre Jesu dag.

as also ye did acknowledge us in part, that we are your glorying, even as ye also are ours, in the day of our Lord Jesus.

15 Og i denne tilliten ønsket jeg først å komme til dere, for at dere skulle ha en andre fordel;

And in this confidence I was minded to come first unto you, that ye might have a second benefit;

16 og fra dere reise videre til Makedonia, og igjen fra Makedonia vende tilbake til dere, og av dere bli hjulpet på reisen til Judea.

and by you to pass into Macedonia, and again from Macedonia to come unto you, and of you to be set forward on my journey unto Judaea.

17 Da jeg tenkte slik, var jeg da ustadig? Eller når jeg planla, gjorde jeg det etter kjødet, slik at det skulle være både ja og nei?

When I therefore was thus minded, did I show fickleness? or the things that I purpose, do I purpose according to the flesh, that with me there should be the yea yea and the nay nay?

18 Så sant Gud er trofast, vårt ord mot dere er ikke 'ja og nei'.

But as God is faithful, our word toward you is not yea and nay.

19 For Guds Sønn, Jesus Kristus, som ble forkynt blant dere av oss, det vil si av meg, Silvanus og Timoteus, var ikke 'ja og nei', men i ham er det 'ja'.

For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us, `even' by me and Silvanus and Timothy, was not yea and nay, but in him is yea.

20 For så mange Guds løfter det er, i ham er de 'ja': Derfor er også gjennom ham 'Amen', til Guds ære gjennom oss.

For how many soever be the promises of God, in him is the yea: wherefore also through him is the Amen, unto the glory of God through us.

21 Han som stadfestet oss med dere i Kristus, og salvet oss, er Gud;

Now he that establisheth us with you in Christ, and anointed us, is God;

22 som også beseglet oss, og ga oss Åndens pant i våre hjerter.

who also sealed us, and gave `us' the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.

23 Men jeg kaller Gud som vitne over min sjel, at jeg sparte dere ved å ikke komme til Korint.

But I call God for a witness upon my soul, that to spare you I forbare to come unto Corinth.

24 Ikke at vi vil herske over deres tro, men vi er medarbeidere på deres glede: for i troen står dere faste.

Not that we have lordship over your faith, but are helpers of your joy: for in faith ye stand fast.
