1 I det sjuende året til Jehu begynte Joasj å regjere, og han regjerte i førti år i Jerusalem. Hans mor het Sibja fra Beersheba.

In the seventh year of Jehu began Jehoash to reign; and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem: and his mother's name was Zibiah of Beer-sheba.

2 Og Joasj gjorde det som var rett i Herrens øyne alle de dager da presten Jojada veiledet ham.

And Jehoash did that which was right in the eyes of Jehovah all his days wherein Jehoiada the priest instructed him.

3 Men offerhaugene ble ikke fjernet; folket ofret og brente røkelse på haugene.

Howbeit the high places were not taken away; the people still sacrificed and burnt incense in the high places.

4 Og Joasj sa til prestene: Alt det hellige pengene som bringes til Herrens hus, det vil si mynter, verdisets penger, og alle pengene som kommer til enhver manns hjerte å bringe til Herrens hus,

And Jehoash said to the priests, All the money of the hallowed things that is brought into the house of Jehovah, in current money, the money of the persons for whom each man is rated, and all the money that it cometh into any man's heart to bring into the house of Jehovah,

5 la prestene ta imot hver av sine kjente, og de skal reparere skadene på huset, hvor enn det blir funnet skader.

let the priests take it to them, every man from his acquaintance; and they shall repair the breaches of the house, wheresoever any breach shall be found.

6 Men i det tjuetredje året av Joasj' regjering hadde prestene ennå ikke reparert skadene på huset.

But it was so, that in the three and twentieth year of king Jehoash the priests had not repaired the breaches of the house.

7 Da kalte kong Joasj til seg presten Jojada og de andre prestene og sa til dem: Hvorfor reparerer dere ikke skadene på huset? Nå skal dere ikke ta mer penger fra deres bekjente, men overgi dem til reparasjonen av huset.

Then king Jehoash called for Jehoiada the priest, and for the `other' priests, and said unto them, Why repair ye not the breaches of the house? now therefore take no `more' money from your acquaintance, but deliver it for the breaches of the house.

8 Og prestene gikk med på at de ikke skulle ta mer penger fra folket, heller ikke selv reparere skadene på huset.

And the priests consented that they should take no `more' money from the people, neither repair the breaches of the house.

9 Men presten Jojada tok en kiste, boret et hull i lokket, og satte den ved siden av alteret, på høyre side når man kommer inn i Herrens hus, og prestene som holdt vakt ved inngangen la alle pengene som ble brakt til Herrens hus, i den.

But Jehoiada the priest took a chest, and bored a hole in the lid of it, and set it beside the altar, on the right side as one cometh into the house of Jehovah: and the priests that kept the threshold put therein all the money that was brought into the house of Jehovah.

10 Og når de så at det var mye penger i kisten, kom kongens skriver og ypperstepresten opp, og de la det i poser og talte pengene som var funnet i Herrens hus.

And it was so, when they saw that there was much money in the chest, that the king's scribe and the high priest came up, and they put up in bags and counted the money that was found in the house of Jehovah.

11 Og de ga de oppveide pengene til dem som gjorde arbeidet, de som hadde oppsynet med Herrens hus, og de betalte det ut til snekrene og byggherrene som arbeidet på Herrens hus,

And they gave the money that was weighed out into the hands of them that did the work, that had the oversight of the house of Jehovah: and they paid it out to the carpenters and the builders, that wrought upon the house of Jehovah,

12 og til murerne og steinhoggerne, og til kjøp av trevirke og hugget stein for å reparere skadene på Herrens hus, og alt som ble utlagt til reparasjon av huset.

and to the masons and the hewers of stone, and for buying timber and hewn stone to repair the breaches of the house of Jehovah, and for all that was laid out for the house to repair it.

13 Men det ble ikke laget sølvbegre, tenger, skåler, trompeter eller noen kar av gull eller sølv av pengene som ble brakt til Herrens hus.

But there were not made for the house of Jehovah cups of silver, snuffers, basins, trumpets, any vessels of gold, or vessels of silver, of the money that was brought into the house of Jehovah;

14 For de ga det til dem som gjorde arbeidet, og med det reparerte de Herrens hus.

for they gave that to them that did the work, and repaired therewith the house of Jehovah.

15 De la heller ikke regnskap med de mennene som fikk pengene for å gi til dem som gjorde arbeidet, for de handlet trofast.

Moreover they reckoned not with the men, into whose hand they delivered the money to give to them that did the work; for they dealt faithfully.

16 Forbrytelsesofferpengene og syndofferpengene ble ikke brakt inn i Herrens hus, de tilhørte prestene.

The money for the trespass-offerings, and the money for the sin-offerings, was not brought into the house of Jehovah: it was the priests'.

17 Da dro Hasael, kongen av Syria, opp og kjempet mot Gat og tok det, og Hasael vendte seg deretter mot Jerusalem.

Then Hazael king of Syria went up, and fought against Gath, and took it; and Hazael set his face to go up to Jerusalem.

18 Og Joasj, kongen av Juda, tok alle de hellige tingene som Josafat, Joram og Ahasja, hans fedre, kongene av Juda, hadde innviet, og sine egne hellige ting, samt alt gullet som ble funnet i skattene i Herrens hus og i kongens hus, og sendte det til Hasael, kongen av Syria. Da vendte han bort fra Jerusalem.

And Jehoash king of Judah took all the hallowed things that Jehoshaphat and Jehoram and Ahaziah, his fathers, kings of Judah, had dedicated, and his own hallowed things, and all the gold that was found in the treasures of the house of Jehovah, and of the king's house, and sent it to Hazael king of Syria: and he went away from Jerusalem.

19 Alt det andre som Joasj gjorde, er det ikke skrevet i krøniken til Judas konger?

Now the rest of the acts of Joash, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?

20 Hans tjenere gjorde opprør og slo ham i hjel i Millo-huset på veien ned til Silla.

And his servants arose, and made a conspiracy, and smote Joash at the house of Millo, `on the way' that goeth down to Silla.

21 Jozakar, sønn av Simeat, og Jehozabad, sønn av Sjomer, hans tjenere, drepte ham, og han døde; de begravde ham med sine fedre i Davids by, og Amasja, hans sønn, ble konge etter ham.

For Jozacar the son of Shimeath, and Jehozabad the son of Shomer, his servants, smote him, and he died; and they buried him with his fathers in the city of David: and Amaziah his son reigned in his stead.
