1 Josjia var åtte år gammel da han ble konge, og han regjerte trettién år i Jerusalem. Moren hans het Jedida, datter av Adaja fra Botskat.

Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign; and he reigned thirty and one years in Jerusalem: and his mother's name was Jedidah the daughter of Adaiah of Bozkath.

2 Han gjorde det som var rett i Herrens øyne, og vandret på alle Davids veier, sin forfar, og vek ikke av til høyre eller venstre.

And he did that which was right in the eyes of Jehovah, and walked in all the way of David his father, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left.

3 I det attende året av kong Josjia sendte kongen Sjafan, sønn av Asalja, sønn av Mesjullam, skriveren, til Herrens hus og sa,

And it came to pass in the eighteenth year of king Josiah, that the king sent Shaphan, the son of Azaliah the son of Meshullam, the scribe, to the house of Jehovah, saying,

4 Gå opp til Hilkia, øverstepresten, så han kan telle opp pengene som er brakt inn i Herrens hus, som dørvaktene har samlet inn fra folket.

Go up to Hilkiah the high priest, that he may sum the money which is brought into the house of Jehovah, which the keepers of the threshold have gathered of the people:

5 La dem gi det til arbeiderne som har tilsyn med Herrens hus, så de kan gi det til dem som arbeider i Herrens hus med å reparere skadene på huset,

and let them deliver it into the hand of the workmen that have the oversight of the house of Jehovah; and let them give it to the workmen that are in the house of Jehovah, to repair the breaches of the house,

6 til tømrerne, byggmesterne, og steinhoggerne, for å kjøpe tømmer og hugget sten til å reparere huset.

unto the carpenters, and to the builders, and to the masons, and for buying timber and hewn stone to repair the house.

7 Men det ble ikke gjort opp regnskap med dem for pengene som ble overlevert dem, for de handlet trofast.

Howbeit there was no reckoning made with them of the money that was delivered into their hand; for they dealt faithfully.

8 Og Hilkia, øverstepresten, sa til Sjafan skriveren: Jeg har funnet lovboken i Herrens hus. Og Hilkia gav boken til Sjafan, og han leste den.

And Hilkiah the high priest said unto Shaphan the scribe, I have found the book of the law in the house of Jehovah. And Hilkiah delivered the book to Shaphan, and he read it.

9 Så kom Sjafan skriveren til kongen og rapporterte til ham og sa: Dine tjenere har tømt ut pengene som ble funnet i huset, og har gitt dem til arbeiderne som har tilsyn med Herrens hus.

And Shaphan the scribe came to the king, and brought the king word again, and said, Thy servants have emptied out the money that was found in the house, and have delivered it into the hand of the workmen that have the oversight of the house of Jehovah.

10 Sjafan skriveren fortalte også kongen og sa: Hilkia presten har gitt meg en bok. Og Sjafan leste den opp for kongen.

And Shaphan the scribe told the king, saying, Hilkiah the priest hath delivered me a book. And Shaphan read it before the king.

11 Da kongen hørte ordene i lovboken, flerret han klærne sine.

And it came to pass, when the king had heard the words of the book of the law, that he rent his clothes.

12 Kongen ga befaling til Hilkia presten, Ahikam sønn av Sjafan, Akbor sønn av Mika, Sjafan skriveren, og Asaja, kongens tjener, og sa:

And the king commanded Hilkiah the priest, and Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Achbor the son of Micaiah, and Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah the king's servant, saying,

13 Gå og spør Herren for meg, for folket, og for hele Juda, angående ordene i denne boken som er funnet. For stor er Herrens vrede som har flammet opp mot oss, fordi våre fedre ikke har fulgt ordene i denne boken for å gjøre alt som er skrevet om oss.

Go ye, inquire of Jehovah for me, and for the people, and for all Judah, concerning the words of this book that is found; for great is the wrath of Jehovah that is kindled against us, because our fathers have not hearkened unto the words of this book, to do according unto all that which is written concerning us.

14 Så gikk Hilkia presten, Ahikam, Akbor, Sjafan og Asaja til profetinnen Hulda, som var gift med Sjallum, sønn av Tikva, sønn av Harhas, vokter av klærne. Hun bodde i Jerusalem, i den andre delen av byen, og de talte med henne.

So Hilkiah the priest, and Ahikam, and Achbor, and Shaphan, and Asaiah, went unto Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvah, the son of Harhas, keeper of the wardrobe (now she dwelt in Jerusalem in the second quarter); and they communed with her.

15 Og hun sa til dem: Så sier Herren, Israels Gud: Si til mannen som sendte dere til meg:

And she said unto them, Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel: Tell ye the man that sent you unto me,

16 Så sier Herren: Se, jeg vil bringe ulykke over dette stedet og dets innbyggere, alt i henhold til ordene i boken som Judas konge har lest.

Thus saith Jehovah, Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, and upon the inhabitants thereof, even all the words of the book which the king of Judah hath read.

17 Fordi de har forlatt meg og brent røkelse for andre guder, for å vekke min harme med alt de har gjort, skal vreden min flamme opp mot dette stedet og ikke slukkes.

Because they have forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the work of their hands, therefore my wrath shall be kindled against this place, and it shall not be quenched.

18 Til kongen av Juda, som sendte dere for å spørre Herren, slik skal dere si til ham: Så sier Herren, Israels Gud: Når det gjelder de ordene du har hørt,

But unto the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of Jehovah, thus shall ye say to him, Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel: As touching the words which thou hast heard,

19 fordi ditt hjerte var ømt, og du ydmyket deg for Herren da du hørte hva jeg uttalte mot dette stedet og dets innbyggere, at de skulle bli til en ødemark og en forbannelse, og fordi du har flerret klærne dine og grått foran meg, har jeg også hørt deg, sier Herren.

because thy heart was tender, and thou didst humble thyself before Jehovah, when thou heardest what I spake against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, that they should become a desolation and a curse, and hast rent thy clothes, and wept before me; I also have heard thee, saith Jehovah.

20 Se, derfor vil jeg samle deg til dine fedre, og du skal bli lagt til graven i fred, og dine øyne skal ikke se all den ulykken jeg vil bringe over dette stedet. Og de bragte dette svaret til kongen.

Therefore, behold, I will gather thee to thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered to thy grave in peace, neither shall thine eyes see all the evil which I will bring upon this place. And they brought the king word again.
