1 Og Elisa sa: Hør Herrens ord: Så sier Herren: I morgen på denne tiden skal en seia med fint mel bli solgt for en shekel, og to seiaer med bygg for en shekel, ved inngangen til Samaria.

And Elisha said, Hear ye the word of Jehovah: thus saith Jehovah, To-morrow about this time shall a measure of fine flour be `sold' for a shekel, and two measures of barley for a shekel, in the gate of Samaria.

2 Da svarte den høvdingen som kongen lente seg på, Guds mann og sa: Se, om Herren gjorde vinduer i himmelen, kunne dette skje? Og han sa: Se, du skal få se det med egne øyne, men du skal ikke få spise av det.

Then the captain on whose hand the king leaned answered the man of God, and said, Behold, if Jehovah should make windows in heaven, might this thing be? And he said, Behold, thou shalt see it with thine eyes, but shalt not eat thereof.

3 Nå var det fire spedalske menn ved inngangen til porten, og de sa til hverandre: Hvorfor sitter vi her til vi dør?

Now there were four leprous men at the entrance of the gate: and they said one to another, Why sit we here until we die?

4 Hvis vi sier: La oss gå inn i byen, så er det hungersnød i byen, og vi vil dø der; og hvis vi blir sittende her, vil vi også dø. Kom, la oss gå over til syrernes leir; hvis de sparer oss, får vi leve; hvis de dreper oss, vil vi bare dø.

If we say, We will enter into the city, then the famine is in the city, and we shall die there; and if we sit still here, we die also. Now therefore come, and let us fall unto the host of the Syrians: if they save us alive, we shall live; and if they kill us, we shall but die.

5 Og de sto opp i skumringen for å gå til syrernes leir; men da de kom til den ytterste delen av leiren, var det ingen der.

And they rose up in the twilight, to go unto the camp of the Syrians; and when they were come to the outermost part of the camp of the Syrians, behold, there was no man there.

6 For Herren hadde fått syrernes hær til å høre lyden av vogner og lyden av hester, lyden av en stor hær; og de sa til hverandre: Se, Israels konge har leid hetittkongene og kongene av Egypt mot oss for å komme over oss.

For the Lord had made the host of the Syrians to hear a noise of chariots, and a noise of horses, even the noise of a great host: and they said one to another, Lo, the king of Israel hath hired against us the kings of the Hittites, and the kings of the Egyptians, to come upon us.

7 Så de sto opp og flyktet i skumringen, og de forlot teltene, hestene og eslene, akkurat som leiren var, og de flyktet for livet.

Wherefore they arose and fled in the twilight, and left their tents, and their horses, and their asses, even the camp as it was, and fled for their life.

8 Og da de spedalske kom til den ytterste delen av leiren, gikk de inn i ett telt og spiste og drakk, og de tok derfra sølv, gull og klær, og gikk bort og gjemte det; så kom de tilbake, gikk inn i et annet telt og tok også derfra og gjemte det.

And when these lepers came to the outermost part of the camp, they went into one tent, and did eat and drink, and carried thence silver, and gold, and raiment, and went and hid it; and they came back, and entered into another tent, and carried thence also, and went and hid it.

9 Men så sa de til hverandre: Vi gjør ikke rett; denne dagen er en dag med gode nyheter, men vi tier. Hvis vi venter til morgengryet, vil straff komme over oss; derfor, kom, la oss gå og fortelle kongens hus det.

Then they said one to another, We do not well; this day is a day of good tidings, and we hold our peace: if we tarry till the morning light, punishment will overtake us; now therefore come, let us go and tell the king's household.

10 Så de kom og ropte til portvokteren i byen; de fortalte dem og sa: Vi kom til syrernes leir, og se, der var ingen, ingen stemme av mennesker, men hestene var bundet og eslene bundet, og teltene stod der som de var.

So they came and called unto the porter of the city; and they told them, saying, We came to the camp of the Syrians, and, behold, there was no man there, neither voice of man, but the horses tied, and the asses tied, and the tents as they were.

11 Og han kalte på portvokterne, og de fortalte det til kongens hus innenfor.

And he called the porters; and they told it to the king's household within.

12 Og kongen sto opp om natten og sa til sine tjenere: Jeg vil nå vise dere hva syrerne har gjort mot oss. De vet at vi er sultne; derfor har de gått ut av leiren for å gjemme seg på marken, og de sier: Når de går ut av byen, skal vi ta dem levende, og komme oss inn i byen.

And the king arose in the night, and said unto his servants, I will now show you what the Syrians have done to us. They know that we are hungry; therefore are they gone out of the camp to hide themselves in the field, saying, When they come out of the city, we shall take them alive, and get into the city.

13 Så sa en av hans tjenere: La noen ta, jeg ber deg, fem av de hestene som er igjen i byen (se, de er som hele folkemengden av Israel som er igjen; se, de er som hele folkemengden av Israel som er blitt fortært), og la oss sende dem for å se.

And one of his servants answered and said, Let some take, I pray thee, five of the horses that remain, which are left in the city (behold, they are as all the multitude of Israel that are left in it; behold, they are as all the multitude of Israel that are consumed); and let us send and see.

14 Så de tok to vogner med hester, og kongen sendte dem etter syrernes hær, og sa: Gå og se.

They took therefore two chariots with horses; and the king sent after the host of the Syrians, saying, Go and see.

15 Og de fulgte etter dem til Jordan, og se, hele veien var full av klær og redskaper som syrerne hadde kastet fra seg i hast. Og budbringerne vendte tilbake og fortalte det til kongen.

And they went after them unto the Jordan: and, lo, all the way was full of garments and vessels, which the Syrians had cast away in their haste. And the messengers returned, and told the king.

16 Og folket gikk ut og plyndret syrernes leir. Så en seia fint mel ble solgt for en shekel, og to seiaer med bygg for en shekel, i samsvar med Herrens ord.

And the people went out, and plundered the camp of the Syrians. So a measure of fine flour was `sold' for a shekel, and two measures of barley for a shekel, according to the word of Jehovah.

17 Og kongen satte den høvdingen som han lente seg på til å ha ansvar for porten: og folket trampet ham i hjel i porten, og han døde, som Guds mann hadde sagt når kongen kom ned til ham.

And the king appointed the captain on whose hand he leaned to have the charge of the gate: and the people trod upon him in the gate, and he died as the man of God had said, who spake when the king came down to him.

18 Da skjedde det, som Guds mann hadde sagt til kongen: To seiaer med bygg for en shekel, og en seia med fint mel for en shekel, skal i morgen på denne tiden være ved inngangen til Samaria;

And it came to pass, as the man of God had spoken to the king, saying, Two measures of barley for a shekel, and a measure of fine flour for a shekel, shall be to-morrow about this time in the gate of Samaria;

19 og den høvdingen hadde svart Guds mann, og sagt: Se, om Herren skulle lage vinduer i himmelen, kunne en slik ting skje? Og han sa: Se, du skal få se det med egne øyne, men du skal ikke få spise av det.

and that captain answered the man of God, and said, Now, behold, if Jehovah should make windows in heaven, might such a thing be? and he said, Behold, thou shalt see it with thine eyes, but shalt not eat thereof:

20 Og det skjedde med ham, for folket trampet ham ned i porten, og han døde.

it came to pass even so unto him; for the people trod upon him in the gate, and he died.
