Og Herren sendte Natan til David. Han kom til ham og sa: Det var to menn i én by, den ene rik og den andre fattig.

And Jehovah sent Nathan unto David. And he came unto him, and said unto him, There were two men in one city; the one rich, and the other poor.

Den rike mannen hadde veldig mange sauer og kyr.

The rich man had exceeding many flocks and herds;

Men den fattige mannen hadde ingenting, unntatt et lite hunnlam som han hadde kjøpt og oppfostret. Det vokste opp sammen med ham og hans barn; det spiste av hans egen mat, drakk av hans egen kopp og lå ved hans barm; det var som en datter for ham.

but the poor man had nothing, save one little ewe lamb, which he had bought and nourished up: and it grew up together with him, and with his children; it did eat of his own morsel, and drank of his own cup, and lay in his bosom, and was unto him as a daughter.

Da kom det en reisende til den rike mannen, og han sparte å ta fra sitt eget kubeint og sine egne dyr for å stelle til for den veifarende som hadde kommet til ham. I stedet tok han den fattige mannens lam og laget mat for mannen som hadde kommet.

And there came a traveller unto the rich man, and he spared to take of his own flock and of his own herd, to dress for the wayfaring man that was come unto him, but took the poor man's lamb, and dressed it for the man that was come to him.

Da ble David veldig sint på mannen og sa til Natan: Så sant Herren lever, mannen som har gjort dette er skyldig til døden.

And David's anger was greatly kindled against the man; and he said to Nathan, As Jehovah liveth, the man that hath done this is worthy to die:

Han skal betale tilbake lammet firedobbelt, fordi han gjorde dette og ikke hadde medlidenhet.

and he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity.

Og Natan sa til David: Du er mannen. Så sier Herren, Israels Gud: Jeg salvet deg til konge over Israel og reddet deg fra Sauls hånd.

And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man. Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, I anointed thee king over Israel, and I delivered thee out of the hand of Saul;

Jeg ga deg din herres hus og din herres hustruer i din favn, og jeg ga deg Israels hus og Juda; og hvis det hadde vært for lite, ville jeg ha lagt til slike og slike ting.

and I gave thee thy master's house, and thy master's wives into thy bosom, and gave thee the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that had been too little, I would have added unto thee such and such things.

Hvorfor har du foraktet Herrens ord og gjort det som er ondt i hans øyne? Du har drept Hetitten Uria med sverd og tatt hans kone til din hustru, og du har drept ham med Amons barns sverd.

Wherefore hast thou despised the word of Jehovah, to do that which is evil in his sight? thou hast smitten Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and hast slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon.

Nå skal derfor sverdet aldri vike fra ditt hus, fordi du har foraktet meg og tatt Urias kone til din hustru.

Now therefore the sword shall never depart from thy house, because thou hast despised me, and hast taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be thy wife.

Så sier Herren: Se, jeg skal la ulykke komme over deg fra ditt eget hus; jeg vil ta dine hustruer foran dine øyne og gi dem til din neste, og han skal ligge med dine hustruer for alles øyne.

Thus saith Jehovah, Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house; and I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and give them unto thy neighbor, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun.

For du gjorde det i hemmelighet, men jeg vil gjøre dette foran hele Israel og foran solen.

For thou didst it secretly: but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun.

Da sa David til Natan: Jeg har syndet mot Herren. Og Natan sa til David: Herren har også tatt bort din synd; du skal ikke dø.

And David said unto Nathan, I have sinned against Jehovah. And Nathan said unto David, Jehovah also hath put away thy sin; thou shalt not die.

Men fordi du ved denne gjerning har latt Herrens fiender få anledning til å spotte, skal også barnet som blir født deg, dø.

Howbeit, because by this deed thou hast given great occasion to the enemies of Jehovah to blaspheme, the child also that is born unto thee shall surely die.

Deretter dro Natan til sitt hus. Og Herren slo barnet som Urias kone hadde født David, så det ble veldig sykt.

And Nathan departed unto his house. And Jehovah struck the child that Uriah's wife bare unto David, and it was very sick.

David søkte derfor Gud for barnets skyld, og David fastet og gikk inn og lå på jorden hele natten.

David therefore besought God for the child; and David fasted, and went in, and lay all night upon the earth.

De eldste i hans hus kom opp til ham og sto ved hans side for å reise ham opp fra jorden, men han ville ikke, heller ikke spiste han brød med dem.

And the elders of his house arose, `and stood' beside him, to raise him up from the earth: but he would not, neither did he eat bread with them.

På den syvende dagen døde barnet. Davids tjenere fryktet å fortelle ham at barnet var dødt, for de sa: Se, mens barnet ennå levde, talte vi til ham og han ville ikke høre vår stemme; hvordan kan vi da fortelle ham at barnet er dødt? Han vil gjøre noe galt.

And it came to pass on the seventh day, that the child died. And the servants of David feared to tell him that the child was dead; for they said, Behold, while the child was yet alive, we spake unto him, and he hearkened not unto our voice: how will he then vex himself, if we tell him that the child is dead!

Men da David så at hans tjenere hvisket sammen, forsto David at barnet var dødt. David sa til sine tjenere: Er barnet dødt? Og de sa: Han er død.

But when David saw that his servants were whispering together, David perceived that the child was dead; and David said unto his servants, Is the child dead? And they said, He is dead.

Da reiste David seg fra jorden, vasket seg, salvet seg og skiftet klær. Han gikk inn i Herrens hus og tilba. Så gikk han til sitt eget hus, og når han ba om det, satte de brød frem for ham, og han spiste.

Then David arose from the earth, and washed, and anointed himself, and changed his apparel; and he came into the house of Jehovah, and worshipped: then he came to his own house; and when he required, they set bread before him, and he did eat.

Da sa hans tjenere til ham: Hva er det du har gjort? Du fastet og gråt for barnet mens det levde, men da barnet var dødt, reiste du deg og spiste brød.

Then said his servants unto him, What thing is this that thou hast done? thou didst fast and weep for the child, while it was alive; but when the child was dead, thou didst rise and eat bread.

Han sa: Mens barnet levde, fastet jeg og gråt, for jeg sa: Hvem vet om ikke Herren gir meg nåde, så barnet får leve?

And he said, While the child was yet alive, I fasted and wept: for I said, Who knoweth whether Jehovah will not be gracious to me, that the child may live?

Men nå er han død; hvorfor skulle jeg faste? Kan jeg bringe ham tilbake igjen? Jeg skal gå til ham, men han vil ikke vende tilbake til meg.

But now he is dead, wherefore should I fast? can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he will not return to me.

David trøstet sin kone Batsyba, og han gikk inn til henne og lå med henne. Hun fødte en sønn, og han ga ham navnet Salomo. Og Herren elsket ham.

And David comforted Bath-sheba his wife, and went in unto her, and lay with her: and she bare a son, and he called his name Solomon. And Jehovah loved him;

Og han sendte bud ved profeten Natan, og han kalte ham Jedidja for Herrens skyld.

and he sent by the hand of Nathan the prophet; and he called his name Jedidiah, for Jehovah's sake.

Joab kjempet mot Rabba fra Amons barn og tok den kongelige byen.

Now Joab fought against Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and took the royal city.

Joab sendte budbringere til David og sa: Jeg har kjempet mot Rabba, ja, jeg har tatt vannbyen.

And Joab sent messengers to David, and said, I have fought against Rabbah; yea, I have taken the city of waters.

Saml nå resten av folket og slå leir mot byen og ta den, så det ikke blir jeg som tar den og byen blir oppkalt etter mitt navn.

Now therefore gather the rest of the people together, and encamp against the city, and take it; lest I take the city, and it be called after my name.

David samlet alt folket, dro til Rabba, kjempet mot byen og tok den.

And David gathered all the people together, and went to Rabbah, and fought against it, and took it.

Han tok kronen fra deres konge av hans hode; den veide en talent gull, og den var prydet med edelstener. Den ble satt på Davids hode, og han brakte meget bytte fra byen.

And he took the crown of their king from off his head; and the weight thereof was a talent of gold, and `in it were' precious stones; and it was set on David's head. And he brought forth the spoil of the city, exceeding much.

Han tok folket som var der, og satte dem til å arbeide med sager, jernhakker og jernøkser, og fikk dem til å arbeide med mursten: Slik gjorde han med alle Amons barns byer. Så vendte David og alt folket tilbake til Jerusalem.

And he brought forth the people that were therein, and put them under saws, and under harrows of iron, and under axes of iron, and made them pass through the brickkiln: and thus did he unto all the cities of the children of Ammon. And David and all the people returned unto Jerusalem.
