1 Brødre og fedre, hør det forsvar som jeg nå gir dere.

Brethren and fathers, hear ye the defence which I now make unto you.

2 Og da de hørte at han talte til dem på hebraisk, ble de enda mer stille. Og han sa,

And when they heard that he spake unto them in the Hebrew language, they were the more quiet: and he saith,

3 Jeg er en jøde, født i Tarsus i Kilikia, men oppvokst i denne byen, ved føttene til Gamaliel, og opplært etter fedrenes strenge lov, ivrig for Gud, slik dere alle er i dag.

I am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city, at the feet of Gamaliel, instructed according to the strict manner of the law of our fathers, being zealous for God, even as ye all are this day:

4 Jeg forfulgte denne Veien til døden, og slo mennesker i lenker og kastet dem i fengsel, både menn og kvinner.

and I persecuted this Way unto the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women.

5 Det kan også ypperstepresten og hele rådet av de eldste vitne om, for fra dem fikk jeg brev til brødrene, og dro til Damaskus for å bringe dem bundet til Jerusalem, slik at de kunne straffes.

As also the high priest doth bear me witness, and all the estate of the elders: from whom also I received letters unto the brethren, and journeyed to Damascus to bring them also that were there unto Jerusalem in bonds to be punished.

6 Og det skjedde, at mens jeg var på vei og nærmet meg Damaskus, skinte plutselig et sterkt lys fra himmelen omkring meg midt på dagen.

And it came to pass, that, as I made my journey, and drew nigh unto Damascus, about noon, suddenly there shone from heaven a great light round about me.

7 Og jeg falt til jorden og hørte en røst som sa til meg: Saul, Saul, hvorfor forfølger du meg?

And I fell unto the ground, and heard a voice saying unto me, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?

8 Og jeg svarte: Hvem er du, Herre? Og han sa til meg: Jeg er Jesus fra Nasaret, han som du forfølger.

And I answered, Who art thou, Lord? And he said unto me, I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou persecutest.

9 Og de som var med meg så lyset, men hørte ikke røsten til ham som talte til meg.

And they that were with me beheld indeed the light, but they heard not the voice of him that spake to me.

10 Og jeg sa: Hva skal jeg gjøre, Herre? Og Herren sa til meg: Stå opp og gå inn i Damaskus, der skal det bli fortalt deg alt det du har fått i oppdrag å gjøre.

And I said, What shall I do, Lord? And the Lord said unto me, Arise, and go into Damascus; and there it shall be told thee of all things which are appointed for thee to do.

11 Og siden jeg ikke kunne se på grunn av det strålende lyset, ble jeg ledet av hånden til de som var med meg, og kom til Damaskus.

And when I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of them that were with me I came into Damascus.

12 Og en viss Ananias, en gudfryktig mann etter loven, godt omtalt av alle jødene som bodde der,

And one Ananias, a devout man according to the law, well reported of by all the Jews that dwelt there,

13 kom til meg, sto ved min side og sa til meg: Broder Saul, få ditt syn igjen. Og i samme stund kunne jeg se ham.

came unto me, and standing by me said unto me, Brother Saul, receive thy sight. And in that very hour I looked up on him.

14 Og han sa: Våre fedres Gud har utvalgt deg til å kjenne hans vilje, og å se Den Rettferdige, og å høre røsten fra hans munn.

And he said, The God of our fathers hath appointed thee to know his will, and to see the Righteous One, and to hear a voice from his mouth.

15 For du skal være et vitne for ham overfor alle mennesker om det du har sett og hørt.

For thou shalt be a witness for him unto all men of what thou hast seen and heard.

16 Og nå, hvorfor nøler du? Stå opp, bli døpt, og få dine synder vasket bort, mens du påkaller hans navn.

And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on his name.

17 Og det skjedde, at da jeg var vendt tilbake til Jerusalem og ba i templet, falt jeg i trance,

And it came to pass, that, when I had returned to Jerusalem, and while I prayed in the temple, I fell into a trance,

18 og så ham som sa til meg: Skynd deg og dra fort ut av Jerusalem, for de vil ikke ta imot ditt vitnesbyrd om meg.

and saw him saying unto me, Make haste, and get thee quickly out of Jerusalem; because they will not receive of thee testimony concerning me.

19 Og jeg sa: Herre, de vet selv at jeg fengslet og slo i synagogene dem som trodde på deg.

And I said, Lord, they themselves know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue them that believed on thee:

20 Og da blodet til Stefanus, ditt vitne, ble utøst, sto jeg også der ved, ga min tilslutning og passet på klærne til dem som drepte ham.

and when the blood of Stephen thy witness was shed, I also was standing by, and consenting, and keeping the garments of them that slew him.

21 Og han sa til meg: Gå, for jeg skal sende deg langt av sted, til hedningene.

And he said unto me, Depart: for I will send thee forth far hence unto the Gentiles.

22 Og de hørte på ham til dette ordet, og de løftet stemmene sine og sa: Bort med en slik mann fra jorden, for han er ikke verdig å leve.

And they gave him audience unto this word; and they lifted up their voice, and said, Away with such a fellow from the earth: for it is not fit that he should live.

23 Og mens de skrek og rev av seg klærne og kastet støv i luften,

And as they cried out, and threw off their garments, and cast dust into the air,

24 befalte kommandanten at han skulle føres inn i borgen, og sa at han skulle undersøkes med piskeslag for å finne ut hvorfor de så skrek mot ham.

the chief captain commanded him be brought into the castle, bidding that he should be examined by scourging, that he might know for what cause they so shouted against him.

25 Og når de hadde bundet ham med reimer, sa Paulus til centurionen som sto ved: Er det lovlig for deg å piske en romersk borger som ikke er dømt?

And when they had tied him up with the thongs, Paul said unto the centurion that stood by, Is it lawful for you to scourge a man that is a Roman, and uncondemned?

26 Og da centurionen hørte det, gikk han til kommandanten og sa: Hva er det du gjør? For denne mannen er en romer.

And when the centurion heard it, he went to the chief captain and told him, saying, What art thou about to do? for this man is a Roman.

27 Og kommandanten kom og sa til ham: Si meg, er du en romersk borger? Og han sa: Ja.

And the chief captain came and said unto him, Tell me, art thou a Roman? And he said, Yea.

28 Og kommandanten svarte: Jeg fikk dette borgerskapet for en stor sum. Og Paulus sa: Men jeg er født romersk borger.

And the chief captain answered, With a great sum obtained I this citizenship. And Paul said, But I am `a Roman' born.

29 Da trakk straks de som skulle undersøke ham seg tilbake fra ham, og kommandanten ble også redd da han skjønte at han var en romer, og fordi han hadde bundet ham.

They then that were about to examine him straightway departed from him: and the chief captain also was afraid when he knew that he was a Roman, and because he had bound him.

30 Men dagen etter, ønsket å få vite årsaken til at han ble anklaget av jødene, løste han ham og befalte at yppersteprestene og hele rådet skulle komme sammen, og han førte Paulus ned og stilte ham foran dem.

But on the morrow, desiring to know the certainty wherefore he was accused of the Jews, he loosed him, and commanded the chief priests and all the council to come together, and brought Paul down and set him before them.
