1 En mann ved navn Ananias, sammen med sin kone Sapphira, solgte en eiendom.

But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession,

2 Men med hennes vitende holdt han tilbake en del av pengene, og han tok med seg resten og la det for apostlenes føtter.

and kept back `part' of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles' feet.

3 Da sa Peter: Ananias, hvorfor har Satan fylt ditt hjerte, så du løy for Den Hellige Ånd og holdt tilbake en del av pengene for eiendommen?

But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thy heart to lie to the Holy Spirit, and to keep back `part' of the price of the land?

4 Var ikke eiendommen din før du solgte den? Og etter at den var solgt, var ikke pengene i din makt? Hvordan har du fått deg til å gjøre dette? Du har ikke løyet for mennesker, men for Gud.

While it remained, did it not remain thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thy power? How is it that thou hast conceived this thing in thy heart? thou has not lied unto men, but unto God.

5 Da Ananias hørte disse ordene, falt han om og døde. Og stor frykt kom over alle som hørte dette.

And Ananias hearing these words fell down and gave up the ghost: and great fear came upon all that heard it.

6 De unge mennene reiste seg, svøpte ham, bar ham ut og begravde ham.

And the young men arose and wrapped him round, and they carried him out and buried him.

7 Omtrent tre timer senere kom hans kone inn, uten å vite hva som hadde skjedd.

And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in.

8 Peter spurte henne: Si meg, solgte dere eiendommen for denne summen? Hun svarte: Ja, for så mye.

And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much. And she said, Yea, for so much.

9 Da sa Peter til henne: Hvordan kunne dere bli enige om å sette Herrens Ånd på prøve? Se, føttene til dem som har begravd mannen din står ved døren, og de skal bære deg ut.

But Peter `said' unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to try the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them that have buried thy husband are at the door, and they shall carry thee out.

10 Straks falt hun ned ved hans føtter og døde. De unge mennene kom inn, fant henne død, bar henne ut og begravde henne ved siden av mannen hennes.

And she fell down immediately at his feet, and gave up the ghost: and the young men came in and found her dead, and they carried her out and buried her by her husband.

11 Og stor frykt kom over hele menigheten og alle som hørte om dette.

And great fear came upon the whole church, and upon all that heard these things.

12 Mange tegn og under ble gjort blant folket av apostlenes hender, og de var alle samlet i Salomos søylegang.

And by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people; and they were all with one accord in Solomon's porch.

13 Men ingen andre våget å slutte seg til dem, selv om folket holdt dem høyt æret.

But of the rest durst no man join himself to them: howbeit the people magnified them;

14 Stadig flere trodde på Herren, store flokker både av menn og kvinner.

and believers were the more added to the Lord, multitudes both of them and women;

15 De bar til og med de syke ut på gatene og la dem på senger og bårer, slik at når Peter kom forbi, skulle i det minste skyggen hans falle på noen av dem.

insomuch that they even carried out the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that, as Peter came by, at the least his shadow might overshadow some one of them.

16 Også fra byene rundt Jerusalem kom mange mennesker, de brakte med seg syke og de som var plaget av urene ånder, og alle ble helbredet.

And there also came together the multitudes from the cities round about Jerusalem, bring sick folk, and them that were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed every one.

17 Men ypperstepresten og alle som var med ham, som tilhørte sadduseernes sekt, reiste seg, fylt av sjalusi.

But the high priest rose up, and all they that were with him (which is the sect of the Sadducees), and they were filled with jealousy,

18 De grep apostlene og satte dem i det offentlige fengselet.

and laid hands on the apostles, and put them in public ward.

19 Men en Herrens engel åpnet fengselets dører om natten, førte dem ut og sa:

But an angel of the Lord by night opened the prison doors, and brought them out, and said,

20 Gå og stå fremme i templet og tal til folket alle disse livets ord.

Go ye, and stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this Life.

21 Da de hørte dette, gikk de ved daggry inn i templet og lærte. Men ypperstepresten og de som var med ham, kom og kalte rådet og hele Israels eldste sammen, og sendte bud til fengselet for å få dem brakt dit.

And when they heard `this', they entered into the temple about daybreak, and taught. But the high priest came, and they that were with him, and called the council together, and all the senate of the children of Israel, and sent to the prison-house to have them brought.

22 Men da betjentene kom, fant de dem ikke i fengselet, og de vendte tilbake og rapporterte,

But the officers that came found them not in the prison; and they returned, and told,

23 og sa: Vi fant fengselet sikkert låst og vaktene stående ved dørene, men da vi åpnet, fant vi ingen der inne.

saying, The prison-house we found shut in all safety, and the keepers standing at the doors: but when we had opened, we found no man within.

24 Da høvedsmannen for templet og yppersteprestene hørte disse ordene, ble de meget forundret over dem og lurte på hva dette skulle føre til.

Now when the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these words, they were much perplexed concerning them whereunto this would grow.

25 Da kom en og kunngjorde for dem: Se, mennene som dere satte i fengsel, står i templet og lærer folket.

And there came one and told them, Behold, the men whom ye put in the prison are in the temple standing and teaching the people.

26 Da gikk høvedsmannen med betjentene og hentet dem, men uten vold, for de fryktet folket, at de skulle bli steinet.

Then went the captain with the officers, and brought them, `but' without violence; for they feared the people, lest they should be stoned.

27 Da de hadde ført dem fram, stilte de dem for rådet. Og ypperstepresten spurte dem,

And when they had brought them, they set them before the council. And the high priest asked them,

28 Vi forbød strengt dere å lære i dette navnet, og se, dere har fylt Jerusalem med deres lære, og vil bringe denne mannens blod over oss.

saying, We strictly charged you not to teach in this name: and behold, ye have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and intend to bring this man's blood upon us.

29 Men Peter og apostlene svarte: Vi må adlyde Gud mer enn mennesker.

But Peter and the apostles answered and said, We must obey God rather than men.

30 Våre fedres Gud reiste opp Jesus, som dere drepte ved å henge ham på et tre.

The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew, hanging him on a tree.

31 Ham har Gud opphøyet med sin høyre hånd til å være fyrste og frelser, for å gi Israel omvendelse og syndenes tilgivelse.

Him did God exalt with his right hand `to be' a Prince and a Saviour, to give repentance to Israel, and remission of sins.

32 Og vi er vitner om disse ting, så også Den Hellige Ånd, som Gud har gitt til dem som adlyder ham.

And we are witnesses of these things; and `so is' the Holy Spirit, whom God hath given to them that obey him.

33 Da de hørte dette, ble de såret i hjertet og ville drepe dem.

But they, when they heard this, were cut to the heart, and minded to slay them.

34 Men en i rådet stod frem, en fariseer ved navn Gamaliel, en lovlærer som var æret av hele folket, han ba om at mennene skulle bli satt ut en stund.

But there stood up one in the council, a Pharisee, named Gamaliel, a doctor of the law, had in honor of all the people, and commanded to put the men forth a little while.

35 Og han sa til dem: Israels menn, se opp for hva dere har tenkt å gjøre med disse mennene.

And he said unto them, Ye men of Israel, take heed to yourselves as touching these men, what ye are about to do.

36 For i tidligere dager stod Theudas frem og utga seg for å være noe, og en mengde, omkring fire hundre menn, sluttet seg til ham; han ble drept, og alle som adlød ham, ble spredt og tilintetgjort.

For before these days rose up Theudas, giving himself out to be somebody; to whom a number of men, about four hundred, joined themselves: who was slain; and all, as many as obeyed him, were dispersed, and came to nought.

37 Etter ham, i mantallets dager, stod Judas fra Galilea frem og dro med seg en del av folket; han omkom også, og alle som adlød ham, ble spredt.

After this man rose up Judas of Galilee in the days of the enrolment, and drew away `some of the' people after him: he also perished; and all, as many as obeyed him, were scattered abroad.

38 Og nå sier jeg dere: Hold dere unna disse mennene og la dem være, for dersom dette råd eller verk er av mennesker, vil det bli til intet.

And now I say unto you, Refrain from these men, and let them alone: for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will be overthrown:

39 Men hvis det er av Gud, vil dere ikke kunne ødelegge dem; for da kan det hende dere ville bli funnet å kjempe mot Gud.

but if it is of God, ye will not be able to overthrow them; lest haply ye be found even to be fighting against God.

40 Til dette godtok de, og de kalte apostlene inn igjen, slo dem og forbød dem å tale i Jesu navn, og lot dem gå.

And to him they agreed: and when they had called the apostles unto them, they beat them and charged them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.

41 De gikk da bort fra Rådets nærvær, glade for at de var blitt aktet verdige til å lide vanære for Navnets skyld.

They therefore departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the Name.

42 Og hver dag, i templet og i hjemmene, fortsatte de å undervise og forkynne Jesus som Messias.

And every day, in the temple and at home, they ceased not to teach and to preach Jesus `as' the Christ.
